I did feel a bit confused by the guest on that part of the convo. Not an expert on modern (or past) Iranian politics by any means but I do feel I have a good idea why the Islamic Republic of Iran would not want to shift away from Islamism ideologically. Nova and Hussein did point this out somewhat.

Hey, so I have been seeing this a lot in my leftist circles around mosques being attacked being a clear mossad plot and as an iranian it's been a bit tough to listen to this narrative. Are there for sure foreign agents co-opting some of the protests and egging people on? Yes. But there are also tons more people who see mosques in Iran quite rightly as the headquarters of Basij which is part of the IRGC. I've personally been detained and processed inside mosques before. They are often used to hold people before they get sent to police stations so I fully understand why people are burning them down. Please please please try and decouple Islam as a faith and mosques as places of worship in a democracy from one in a theocracy. I am begging you. It is so much more nuanced than that. Edit: Just to clarify, I am firmly on the left, anti-monarchist, and obviously anti-zionist. It's just been so difficult listening to the mossad rhetoric with "mosque burning" being branded as islamophobic by people without the proper cultural context which truly undermines what my people are out in the street dying for. Your message just happened to be what got to me in the moment - not in any way meant to be a personal attack.
