The Day After The Day After Tomorrow ft. Séamus Malekafzali

Séamus - now host of the Turbulence podcast about the post-American imperial age - joins us to talk about the ceasefire in Gaza that wasn't, as well as the whole-of-government effort to rehabilitate football hooliganism. Also, we look at a fun new way to get carbon dioxide into your body.

Check out Séamus's new show - https://turbulencepod.substack.com.

Nova, a propos your otherwise impeccable pronunciation; the G in Legia is a G as in Gun, rather than G as in Gentle. Love!

The thing that annoys me so much about the damage that cultural institutions do to themselves to allow isreal to get away with shit that they wouldn't accept if anyone else did it is that isreal itself bearly gives a shit. Like it you look at their entries in eurovision since 2018 when they actually seemed to go "we should try and conform to what the competition wants us to do" and get a bit camp with it, and then won that year's entry, ever since then they've been putting out just some drizzling shitty generic power ballads that are expressly political, and never actually do that well, only really attending so they can try and engage in some hasbara and cause issues that if they didn't would make them look better.

I know Israel might be weird as a culture but they have quite good genetics and stem cell research, partially due to nationalized robust healthcare investment in scientific research (for weapons) and an somewhat higher rate of recessive genetic disorders due to founder effect / consanguineous marriages among both certain sections of the Arab / Jewish population. Unfortunately they are cooking in one aspect

This is the plot of the iconic Forest Whitaker and Orlando Bloom movie Zulu. (Which is also based on an actual weapons program.)

As a former Peoria resident, every time someone uses “Peoria, IL” as stand in for “random small-to-medium city in the American Midwest,” I get sniped.

One aspect of the Maccabi controversy that seems to have gone under the radar is Kemi Bad Enoch doing an interview / public statement where she seems to think the the away fans were banned because the police couldn't guarantee to keep them safe from all the violent anti-semites in Birmingham. Lol.

They replaced knocking out pigs with bolts to putting them out in sealed elavators with steadily increasing CO2 level. Was considered more “humane“ until some scientists looked into it (for the first time). They suggested, that the the increasing CO2 makes the pigs hyperventilating and carbon acid forming up the nostrils. So if you feel a tickle in your nose, like when you are shugging down a Coke to fast, keep going!

Riley is pretty wrong about the amount of passion Israelis have about football. It’s on the same level as in the UK. The national team is laughably bad though. I enjoyed seeing all of the Erling Haaland keffiyeh memes after Norway thrashed Israel 5-0 last week.

H
Hovis · October 22, 2025

I do kind of wonder if the Israeli interest in football explains to an extent the way that they seem to have made a point of annihilating football infrastructure on Palestinian land. Stadiums, pitches, players of all ages, they've been targeted, and by the normal run of things I would have thought a football pitch is by definition not a target. Like, it's a field. By definition to function as a pitch there has to be nothing on it but lines. I do like that Israel is in Europe for football competitions though. They were able to win the odd game or tournament in Asia. In Europe they get constantly battered everywhere they go.

H
Hovis · October 22, 2025

Thanks for the jarring shift in tone at the end. Holy fuck what a miserable episode otherwise. Not your fault. Hard to find much funny about the current timeline unless you've got exactly the right balance of lead poisoning and hypoxia going on. Also congratulations to Nova not succumbing to a full blown 'hear me out' moment on the Acme Breathplay 9000 or whatever it was called.

The funniest bit about carbogenetics is that everyone was so busy dunking about the ridiculous bits that nobody realized that every single statement on their site contradicts every other statement. It is the largest amount of bait-per-switch you can put on one site.

I needed that ending. I always regretted not becoming a dentist…for many reasons, but among them nearer the bottom of the list as ‘potential perks’ would be hot & educated assistants or hygienist dating pool (not necessarily mad men style @ work to be clear) and if/when the time comes, can just lay back in the chair and crack the laughing gas, maybe take some LSD and ‘call it a life?’ (Hopefully in my beautiful downtown office with a nice view?) Not in the UK to verify / unsure how many NOS canisters are littering around, but has the NOs price 10x’d or something? Have these rich app/ startup twits / dour Protestant scolds not heard of another gas that’s juvenile, stupid & (also) kills brain cells, but at least… …enjoyable? (And I say this defacto one foot on Kesey’s bus and knowing some who’ve tragically spun out & unintentionally froze their lung in a closet and died many years on as one observes aging fried hippies 50+ years on ) I have no clue why you’d pay $ for CO2…you can leave the oven on & have some heat on a cold day &/or finish welding up an exhaust (with the respirator on and plenty of lead coating the original pipes perfectly preserving them from rust on a pre 1975 car as the no-rust west coast smog exempt driver…when I don’t e-bike / transit the rest of the time? I did ‘don the respirator as I observed the soot peel off so beautifully with a nice coating of lead under it preserving the original 60+ yo pipe prior to working and welding it up… Years ago, the Nike team for some sporting event rented a house in Portland Oregon (1996?) and reduced its atmospheric pressure / sealed it off more w/filtered air to simulate higher elevations, and, supposedly that has both general health and training benefits? We don’t all have the Nike sponsorship $ & pro athlete bodies, but I digress? (I contend hygienist is the last normal middle class decent paying job left in America that does a useful necessary thing, doesn’t beat up your body and mind too badly, doesn’t have a bunch of insurance involved / middle man markups all that often, doesn’t exploit others other you necessarily, doesn’t seem to discriminate on gender & challenge anyone to find another such job?) I am now going to try to find the CO2 / ‘carbon lobby’ (they believe more atmospheric CO2 is good, actually if you ever want to go down an insanely black-pilling rabbit hole…of course this exists?) that had a booth @ 2019 CPAC & see if I can take a finders fee to put these two together?

Carbon MONoxide has been part of the latest wave of performance enhancement in pro cycling, along with hyperthermia suits and tart cherry juice. You should have Kate Wagner on if she's up for it. Oh I forgot to mention that they eat baking soda too. Also the Tour de France exists because of the Dreyfus Affair. And is the origin of Italian divorce.

I used to joke about reverse doping where I'd donate blood and train hard until my red blood cells grew back. The idea was that I'd get used to working with less oxygen. What actually happened: I felt like garbage and wanted to die every time I had to do intervals. Then I would pass out and/or get sick.
