Go Hoke, Go Broke

We check in on old friend Volocopter, a company we assume is going from strength to strength as the official air taxi partner of Neom! Where a later reading indicates that eight year olds are driving trucks. Also, the UK is in economic crisis again, and we don’t even have the fun of a bathrobe soiling-prime minister.

Things seem bleak, until you realise there's a breakdancing contest and the prize money is exactly what Britain needs to keep its economy going

On the bonds stuff, a quick clarification: One of the assumptions people make is that bonds change their yield because of the risk that a country won't pay their bonds AKA default risk. This literally cannot happen in a country with its own central bank issuing bonds in its own currency. Without default risk, the only thing bond traders need to care about is the yield relative to the central bank rate which strictly speaking means that the bond yield is whatever the government, acting through its agent the central bank, wants it to be. That said, in practice the government likes to pretend it's constrained (because we are at the mercy of a clueless and feckless ruling class who don't like to be held responsible the state of the world) so instead the central bank sets rates as a kind of signal for where they want inflation to be (with dubious evidence as to how effective that is): If they want inflation to go down, they raise the rates; if they want inflation to rise, they lower it. That means that all of the shifts in bond rates can be tracked towards not even inflation expectations, but the ossified inflation expectations of the Bank of England. That on its own explains both the Truss "crash", where the orthodoxy would just expect her measures to cause inflation and therefore need to be adapted to, and the current situation where nobody expects UK bonds to be brought back down any time soon.

the inevitable happened and a Labour MP just decided that he'd be going along with the grooming gangs panic, doing his best Patriotic Alternative impression by calling for 'us' to 'challenge the orthodoxy of progressive liberal multiculturalism', but I checked his wiki and apparently he (Dan Carden) is an "avowed socialist" who served in the Corbyn cabinet and was until recently a Socialist Campaign Group member? nothing makes sense anymore lol. Is this one of those 'saying the word is praxis' guys, perhaps more of a 'national' socialist, you might say? He did use the word 'working-class' in that annoying way that politicians often do where it's obvious they're talking about a cultural Vibe (i.e. white, male, regional accent, seems like the kind of person who'd wax lyrical about goin' down t' pits) instead of a socioeconomic category, but a lot of people who aren't completely deranged also do that, so...

V
Vanessa P · January 13, 2025

...and now a second call for inquiry has hit the Labour Party (this time by a Blairite racist - bipartisanship, woo!) They're gonna do an inquiry, aren't they. All because Elon Musk saw a tweet.

Are the volocopter people under the misapprehension that the 'helicopter' is protected by patent or something? Every one of their designs seems to be a way to build 'helicopter, but more complicated, more expensive, and less performance'.

S
Salubrious_George · January 17, 2025

They certainly act like it. One of my thoughts is they can't let anyone think of the word 'helicopter' because the next logical question is asking 'helicopters have been around for +70 years: why aren't they as ubiquitous as cars?' (answer: coming into contact with reality).

I regret to inform everyone that we already know what Trump thinks about Wheels. Back in Jan of 2019 he gave a speech about how walls are older than wheels, and that 1000 years from now everything else will be obsolete. Therefore congress needed to build his Wall and not waste time on drones. And you know what, he was right, drones are a waste of time.

Since Liz Truss was too much freak for the British press, and Starmer is too little freak for the British press, then I think Blair and Boris are just the perfect pair of confident service sub paypigs for the billionaire owned and international finance backed hyper anxious findoms that make up what seem to be the majority of British Columnists. allegedly.
