2024 Trashfuture Q&A, Part 1

You asked us questions and we answered. Hussein is out on parental leave, but we convened the rest of the cast (Riley, Milo, Nate, and November) to respond as best as possible. However, it went so long that we decided to make it into two episodes. Part 2 will be out next week. Thanks so much for being a TF patron!

An underrated way to stay sane in a terrible place to live is cyber bullying your local politicians (I live in Ohio)

Cant believe you neglected any meaningful debate on the matter of pants. TF branded booty shorts, TF embroidered culottes. Come ON people, the ideas write themselves!

Riley mentions that it is 'impossible' to get regular GP appointments in SE London. As an American, that's shocking. I know the NHS has been severely underfunded and wait times can be long (although, if you look at average wait times the US and UK are still not that different as it can take months or even years to get care from specialists here too) but not being able to see a GP seems hard to believe. Afterall, the UK life expectancy is almost 5 years longer than the US. I do sometimes have to wait up to several weeks to see my GP during busy times of the year but that's the absolute max and there are usually slots available for appointments with affiliated providers earlier. Of course, in the US this is gate kept by living in a major city and having good insurance. So my question is: is it really that difficult to have regular appointments with providers in the UK? And if so, does anyone know why the UK still has such drastically better health metrics? Is it just lifestyle/diet? Cheers and Merry, err I mean Happy, Christmas

It seems like (from Australia) the NHS is still better than the puppeteered corpse of Obamacare for many people, but like every other underfunded state apparatus the more disadvantaged/marginalised you are the worse you will be served

I started listening to Trash Future off of a mention in a Lions Led By Donkeys episode in late 2019. First episode I listened to opened with a clogheads song. I love this show. It Keeps the horrors at bay. Looking forward to new weird guys in FY2025

On living in England and not going insane, Elenor Janega mentioned 3 socialist dance parties on We're Not So Different (Beauty and the Beat, All Our Friends, and Lucky Cloud Sound System). I can't make them on account of being trapped in Eric Adam's New York, but they sounded fun and this seems like the place to cross-pollinate that information.

Nate back with the 'UK is the worst possible place to live in the world' schtick again Like, I get it, I love Nate and shit sucks here for loads of people for tons of reasons, and I'm also really sorry about Nate and Cynthia's awful healthcare experience. But we're not dealing with some sui generis kind of fucked here, we are dealing with a national articulation of a doomed global economic system and I feel like we might need a bit of perspective. There's a tiny number of places you could emigrate to that would be appreciably better - OK maybe Switzerland, the Nordics, but tell me with a straight face that everything is cooking just fine there. (Also the idea that the US is a better option than the UK - lmfao). Personally I've always had a hankering to move to the Netherlands but the shit my Dutch friends tell me about, fuck me, it is not a million miles off the stupidity and venality we have here. Trash futures have no country friends

I mean, I’ve lived in 4 countries (Uk, two European, one south american) in the last 7 or so years, and I would say life in the UK is the worst of all of them. That’s not to say the others were/are perfect (committed to living in one of them 4 years ago and still based there) but QoL is distinctly worse in the UK — it has the worst elements of all the others and is way more expensive. So I guess I don’t think it’s true to say there’s a tiny number of places that are appreciably better — perhaps true that there’s a tiny number that are miles better, but I think quite a lot that are appreciably better, at least for the moment

As a denizen of Northern Ireland I can categorically say living in a devolved region is NOT the solution - we are living in Children of Men but if it were happening in a post soviet state in the mid 90s. Fun times!

T
Tom Vaughan · December 29, 2024

I lived in mid Wales for 8 years and it was like living in a shopping centre that's stuck in an infinite closing down sale. The devolved adminstration at least under Drakeford more or less did its best but fuck if it wasn't grim. In fact, have just moved to Northern England (not where I'm from) and the experience is better all round.

Amazing episode, love this podcast. Now I thought of one question I would have asked if I ever got my arse in gear. That would be: What would you do if Spotify were to offer you a 1 million a year deal for exclusivity on the podcast? And have they already been in touch? I know this is totally late and won't get answered but anyway, it's something I have always wondered about as the way you host and keep the podcast going is inspiring and I fucking hate Spotify. Nate enjoy Geneva and let me know if you need any Swiss help.

the underrated part about the Jaguar rebrand is that Jaguar the automaker has been just totally adrift and a complete non-factor for at least two decades, so as much as I don't vibe with their flat ass non serif new logotype, it's hard to get really mad about it *UNTIL* you see this totally heineous AI edit of their diverse model cast thing they did that someone tweaked to have a jaguar cat attack everyone and that has the worst people on earth cry laugh emojying it in the most like I intend this to be hate speech possible manner

T

The only thing I remember about the Jaguar thing is Marina Hyde moaning about it, which seemed like a rather revealing moment - these liberal columnists are so social-media-brained that they have ended up obsessing about the same deeply deranged non-issues as Ian Miles Cheong. Almost like whenever they comment on politics they're just responding to stimuli that they find annoying or scary rather than presenting a vision for a better society. Anyway the only real answer is REJECT CAR EMBRACE TRAIN

V
Vanessa P · December 27, 2024

I suppose 'centrists being easily persuaded to care about meaningless bullshit' is hardly a new phenomenon - remember when Starmer felt it was appropriate to weigh in on the made up 'woke Roald Dahl censorship' story? - but it is concerning how Musk owning Twitter has essentially streamlined the pipeline to the point where memelord1488 can rage about some corporate social responsibility crap, then clueless lib journalist decides it matters because it's on X dot com the everything app, and then Barry P. Wooferendum reads the story or an associated column, gets Bad Woke Vibes from whatever it is that the story is about, thinks "maybe the Polite Fascists have a point about this one", and becomes *marginally* more DeSantis-esque in his worldview every time.
