All That Geelongs Round the Gyre
This week, it's Riley, Milo, and November discussing the eternal phenomenon of the infinity tax-break Jeremy Clarkson-type farmer, the "farmer protests," and the fact that no one seems willing to understand that, as far as British politics is concerned, half-measure liberal concessions to right-wing populism just wind up making the full-bore version happen instead. Weird how this,, keeps happening,

They see the number; aren’t doing the math…
Love the terrible Israeli ai startup that's leeching on the terrible ghostwritten algorithmically selected topic audiobook spam trend which is itself a leech that hasn't actually drawn any blood for almost a decade except for the mlm training scams also leeching off it.
-there’s the right way, the wrong way, and the AI way. -isn’t that just the wrong way? -yes, but faster!
*Looking at my thrifted Barbour jacket I fixed and re-waxed myself* You better not make me look like a Tory, cunt.
As someone who is unfortunately a tax professional, the UK is either wildly punitive (tax on loans to directors for example) or wildly permissive (farms are/were estate tax free). The history of being ruled by landlords and tepid social democrats writ large.
Oh, trashfuture getting dangerously close to my special interest of farming and food. I'm not precisely sure on Britain vs the US but farmland is generally overvalued relative to the money you can make farming on it as it valued under the assumption that one day it will be developed into single family housing and you should just hold it forever until that happens. Over here we do have yearly property tax in most states here but it's not, generally speaking, significant enough to dent the rise in valuation and if it was it would immediately bankrupt everyone actually growing food. The farmers using slave labor and the farmers worried about exactly how many millions will be exempt are probably two distinct groups. The former are probably the "specialty" crop fruit/veg in which the primary cost is labour, and the latter are more likely commodity farmers of grains and soy that are too highly mechanized to employee anyone other than the farmer and that poorly as you point out. Modern mechanized farming is incredibly capital intensive so it is quite likely that instead of just soaking the rich an asset tax will just fold some of the large by human scale but small by agribusiness scale farms into BlackRock. No one will be sad though because the whole system is broken and the only actual farmers left are like 3 guys in their 80s.
New Labours of Hercules could be a great shirt. Buff dude, long hair, holding the jawbone of a goat, but wearing a badly fitting suit and Clark Kent glasses. He's waiting in line in an office that says "ID cards" or "Tax Incentives" or "Emergency Room." I'll accept my royalties in Bitcoin or bonds for Neom megastructure construction projects.
I work for one of the big 4 publishers in the UK and when I tell you we HOWLED at Spines. Good luck lads.
Milo's Aussie accent is uncomfortably accurate. Also "new labours of hercules" was an underappreciated bit
Deere John - Your tractor is no more, Stolen by the tax-man To feed his gaping maw. Now you must leave your Unsown fields, your Unshorn sheep, your Unsoiled Range Rover. Lay down your Barbour jacket , My dear farmer, Gather your faithful friends, And make more Top Gear.
Starmerist electoral politics: LETS GO GAMBLING AW DANG IT AW DANG IT AW DANG IT AW DANG IT
Actually no. It's worse. Imagine being Lord Colley but where you're running like a shitty colony *is* the metropol
Re asset bubbles: There’s a white paper from economists at the famously leftist Bank of International Settlements pointing out that, actually, price/wage inflation has never been shown to have knock-on effects to the economy. Out of hand asset price inflation, on the other hand, is almost always devastating when it unwinds. The economists reasonably concluded that maybe governments shouldn’t stoke asset bubbles.
Actually i misremembered this a bit but the gist is the same. Price -deflation- doesn’t have bad effects. Asset deflation does. So it’s bad for governments to stoke asset inflation for the purposes of getting some consumer price inflation. Asset bubbles (that always pop) and consumer inflation are both bad and there’s not really a trade off going on here.
as an aussie listener i find the specificness of these references weirdly gratifying. unfortunately very few of us down here are glued into a position where we can actually watch the big tv, so podcasts are a godsend 🙏
I can't speak for England, but in Germany our farmer protests, while of course also being influenced by the political right, were justified
imagine hooning a tesla
You'd start a fire that would take 1 week to put out.
Twûnkhöle mentioned!!
in the war between kulaks and the haute bourgeoisie I only hope for a pyrrhic victory for whoever wins
Loving the sumptuous new flat room noise on November. This is not a parasocial thing to notice.
When was this recorded?
"kick him over to Canada--" DO FUCKING NOT
he's our boy! He immigrated from SA to Canada first before they let him into the US
Listening to this in Geelong
I’ve actually seen the tyre marks and colour on the ground from a gender reveal hoon (it was a girl) from working on quiet road in an industrial bit of outer east Melbourne Also Milo’s wog voice is haunting
Four minutes left and I'm anxiously listening to see if they recognize The Booty Warrior Fleece Johnson.
Geelong local government update after recent elections: the state Labor government’s cunning plan of forcing all Victorian councils to move from multi-member to single member wards has suceded in reducing socialist and Greens councillors including in Geelong. No Darryn Lyons’ but boring normal Liberals (conservatives) now in command there.
that delve thing is real bad for real delve heads like me
Tesla hoons
The worst political event... in the world
Sick
You either die a sick cunt, or live long enough to see yourself become a dog cunt
If you get angry about the wrong thing, you can storm and occupy a Capitol for _months_ and have the whole thing memory-holed. Seriously, the last time l heard the 2011 Capitol Occupation in Madison, WI mentioned was a throwaway line from a Chapo live show.
“See it, Say it, Sick Cunt” t-shirt pleaaaaaaase 🙏🏽
Unless, damn does ACAB include Australian British Transport Police
feeling guilty for being this into how sultry Nova's voice sounds this episode bc it probably means she isn't feeling well or something but the heart wants what the heart wants ig
Tonight, in Top Tax Tier : I start a farm! James lobbies in Westminster. And Hammond purchases "bitcoin". *Jessica starts playing *
Our company is probably 50/50 migrants, and I always thought it was them embracing diversity, having had to hire people in this country I now realise it's because British applicants by and large, are incredibly underskilled.
Perfect soundtrack for folding clothes at my mom’s. Anyone that lives in an urban area in the US knows Wednesday is for drinking, Thursday is for turkey, Friday is for the laundry. Saturdays are for the boys. Gobble gobble, bitches
I was watching a tik tok live of one of the attendees of the farmers protest and he couldn't stop banging on about "woke labour" and when they got moved to the green outside parliament just in front of St James's cathedral he kept on going "bet you don't do it too the Palestinians!" And simply kept coming back to that well like all the time it was so fascinating a look into the mind. The account was called "saving britian"
November saying Cryptofascist reminded me that we have at least two types of those now don't we. Perhaps a hyphen would help us distinguish between the two.
Clarkson makes a big deal every exam results period about how he got only got C and U in his exams. He must have picked up an N and a T somewhere else
