Here in America patriotism is ubiquitous. Our flag and our anthem are everywhere, it's like Europe pre-WW1. So it made me smile to learn the Labour Party never sang the national anthem before. That'd be a scandal over here, people would be losing their fucking minds lol. Do they still sing The Red Flag?

What genuinely annoys me about the "We need to win power first crowd" (outside of the whole "thinking they're geniuses for inventing the concept of lying to win an election" thing) is that the data showing they're huffing their own farts is pretty clear. Literally just look at the past century of UK elections and you'll find the one data point you need for their oh-so-clever targeting strategy to be provably a mechanism for winning, i.e. a party winning a majority with a minority of the vote, has only happened twice in over 100 years, 1951 and 1974. Their strategy is therefore a strategy for third parties under First Past the Post and for mildly enlarging a majority, not a strategy for winning overall. So literally the only reason it can exist in a major political party is so that not particularly bright people to have a story they can tell themselves and their mates. Meanwhile those of us with a functioning brain can just look and notice that the Tory vote collapsed largely independently of Labour (see Party Gate where Starmer moaned for months to no effect and *had to rely on a fucking Tory rebellion to oust Johnson*).

I am wondering if, given his superior political noos, Riley has any ideas re: how the left can retake Labour - and, if not, whether there was any chance at any point that a client state of the USA would be allowed to have a socialist government

The National Athnem at the Labour conference reminds me of the insanity that struck my old university (Warwick) in the form of since 2022 playing the national anthem at EVERY graduation service… of course even stranger bcos it was prerecorded because they also had a moment of Penny pinching and no longer pay for the chamber choir or even print programmes
