Schrödinger's Pervert feat. Becca Wilks

For this week's TF bonus, we're speaking with Welsh journalist Becca Wilks about the Welsh government's usage of automatic facial recognition, the privacy nightmare it creates, and their frankly bonkers justifications for why they want to use it everywhere. Don't worry, it won't cause any.....actually we're just getting an update that it's already being used to stifle protests?

A note from Becca: "Myself and Devon are currently supporting Ahmed, a dad of four in Gaza, to raise money for the family’s living costs and eventual evacuation. We’re also trying to help Ahmed’s friend Rasha, who is a medical student in Egypt with her entire family trapped in Rafah. Both sets of families have been through absolutely harrowing ordeals, and every aspect of staying alive there at the moment is backbreaking work - fetching big containers of water over long distances in 35C heat, breaking up wood to try and get a fire going to cook, everything. Both families are raising money through GoFundMe."

We're having exactly the same (lack of) debate here in Massachusetts on emergency shelter spending vs permanent shelter capital investment

I feel really naïve listening to this bc having, “this is crazy” reactions when I know I shouldn’t be surprised. And yet. Prison sentence for Loomering yourself to a building? Using CA gang policing to control who protesters “affiliate” with? Dark shit

it's so cool that the arc of facial recog technology was 0) sooo this is cutting advance in the field of machine learning 1) unlock your phone now with this! easy, fun, convenient! 2) terrifying: China is now using this to do Xinjiang. this is why we need Sanction 3) expert panel recommends strong laws to frame and control facial recognition law enforcement applications 4) [article that makes the round in left shitpost twitter about how Juggalo clown pain confuses face recog algos] 5) this provice of a Friend Country is now using blanket facial recognition because of vague internal politics 6 (next) hot startup CeeTeevo announces new doorbell camera that is able to dispatch a tactical air strike directly to the street adress of the guy you suspect is fly tipping next to your house

If you were also baffled by the phrase "panda car," check out all 26 series of hit UK police procedural The Bill. Small time commitment to not be baffled by social interactions about policing, I'd say.

The thing is, creativity is already pretty democratized. You can just… go and do it. The tech brained just want everyone to produce passably good outputs without any learning or effort. They’re starting from a desired end product and working backwards, because to them that’s all it is

Hate it when I get to Wales and I get an A4 pushed into my face and vigorously rubbed with the flat side of a crayola crayon to take my impression

Why didn’t the Tories think to kill two turds with one stone and pump shit into the English Channel instead of the Thames? Create a protective poop moat around the home islands, you know?

Also, obviously, the way Kier Starmer should address the situation is to annex Kuwait.

Does anybody know the episode where they previously talked about OYO? I'm surprised that oyo was something other than a slightly edgy Motel 8. But the only one I know of is in Vegas and was formerly the Hooters resort, and it's bedbug problem. https://maps.app.goo.gl/7qeNk2SKBpeuvgKJ7

13:20 Plus, AI is still limiting your ability to create based on your resources. It's simply replacing "you can make art, provided you can pay for a tablet/easel/paper and some space" with "you can make art, provided you can scrape together enough to pay for a prompt". And you still need to come up with the creative idea for the art beyond "lady with big boobs sucks my dick clean off".

Oh neat! On a recent Scrench November full-named Becca, so I'm glad to learn she's already a named person and I didn't have forbidden knowledge thrust upon me.

It is most necessary to embrace Welsh brethren, history and present, underexposed victims of the British empire, most wonderful accents and language to the ear. And perhaps the stealth worse injustice of all: having to hear almost every American go "hey you sound Irish?...Scottish?" ---- Wait...was I supposed to say "first!"?
