Live, Laugh, Lars feat. Rob Smith

Friend of the show and Financial Times journalist Rob Smith joins us to discuss Euro finance guys. Why are they so louche and strange? Why are they just sort of hanging around connecting people? Why is this entire episode a name alert? We also discuss Volocopter and Neom some more. It's an episode you don't want to miss.

LIVE SHOW ALERT See us live in London on May 29th with special guest Nish Kumar! Get tickets here: https://bigbellycomedy.club/event/trashfuture-presents-liz-truss-presents-ten-years-to-save-the-west-ft-nish-kumar/

Milo dropping action movies from 1999 in this one like it's no one's business

To be fair, when your conviction is for trying to bribe people, it's not exactly surprising that a bunch of oligarchs still want to work with you

"Why is there no left wing expansive international graft situation?" Oh for the Huey Long timeline

Re, Volocopter (the spinning rat!): I have a couple TF episodes I go back to listen to because they just hit me when I need to laugh. The Live Sydney episode where the spinning rat first debuted is one of them. 10 out 10, that specific episode I recommend.

Between the names and the general character of everyone involved in everything, l'm left convinced that Thomas Pynchon wrote this episode

Not British, so the accents may be throwing me off, but does anyone else think guest Rob sounds just like Hussein with a head cold?

Rob is spot on assuming that European contractors for Neom do the due diligence game. There is a longer feature from German public radio in which they confront German contractors with the human rights violations around the project and they all go: "Well our CSR team has found that there aren't any violations in the bits of Neom that WE work on". The authors also cover the role of the German government in this. Maybe you can find a place that translates audio and/or have the authors on the show. https://www.ardaudiothek.de/episode/dok-5-das-feature/blut-sand-und-beton-deutschland-und-das-neom-projekt-der-saud/wdr-5/13384649/

In global businesses this is the bread and butter. Usually some parts of the contract says : your (euro/American) contractor might refuse dangerous conditions, but don't argue or even speak to locals about that. A hot topic during onboarding for these positions is : what do I do if a (local) worker is gravely injured or dies?

Listening to this episode, a lot of it reminds me of the Left of Read episode on Irmgard Keun's Child of all Nations. It just seems like theres so many promises, schemes, and relying on the protocols of the aristocracy just to maintain themselves.

Frank McCourt would be a fun subject for a gaiden episode of the show, as someone who lived in L.A. when his divorce caused the Dodgers to become a billion dollar team.

Perhaps MBS has ALREADY read Ballard. Every Saudi development pitch is just Super-Cannes, complete with the pedophilia & (literal) poor bashing, but without the actual scientists doing actual work. If theres one thing we've learned about autocrats its that they read the dystopian fiction and think "That sounds AMAZING".
