Wearable Joe Biden Simulator LED Consent Light

It's the free one!

For this week’s free episode, it’s Riley, Hussein, and November discussing some interesting UK politics news regarding a little-known political entity called the Labour Party and a little-known digital voting software platform they designed and adopted that’s now being investigated by a little-known group called the Metropolitan Police Cybercrime Unit. Oh well! We also talk about an AI wearable that tries to record your life, and hints from the Tony Blair Institute that Blair is desperate for a Starmer premiership… because he wants to introduce ID cards. Yes. He’s at it again.

*LIVE SHOW ALERT* See us live in London on May 29th with special guest Nish Kumar! Get tickets here: https://bigbellycomedy.club/event/trashfuture-presents-liz-truss-presents-ten-years-to-save-the-west-ft-nish-kumar/

I can tell you why the battery life is so bad at the same time I tell you why these combadge-wannabes are being made and why it's not just an app on your phone. This thing is designed to constantly scrape all the data you're generating, whether or not you're actively interacting with the device, to be used to furnish LLMs. Google and Apple are competitors in the space and you also don't want to have to give the disclosures on data harvesting that both Google and Apple require apps to give.

One thing that really struck me about Limitless, as a former miserable ~administrative professional~ at a couple of tech companies, is that it's aiming to replace every function of an executive assistant insofar as possible, because everything it is supposed to for executives is what EAs do. The luxury of having an EA is pitched and getting someone to do all of the essential tasks you're too important to do, but it's actually getting to fully outsource your executive functioning to another human being who is better at it than you are. Anyway, I don't think it will work, because admin labor, especially at an EA level, is not something I think generative AI can do well, but it is yet another sign of how much tech creeps devalue and misunderstand any labor that's not "Business" or "Engineering" and resent having to rely on other people (in admin, project management, customer service, operations, food service, etc.) who don't even have MBAs or write code to make their lives and companies function. If this *were* to work, the result would be to wipe out an occupational category that is a lifeline to middle class to women in particular, though also often to men of color & queer people of all genders -- anyone who doesn't have the luxury to consider admin work beneath them but still has middle class acculturation. However, it won't work, because so replacing skilled feminized labor with a shitty, cheap technological facsimiles based on a) misunderstanding of how the tasks are performed and b) the misconception that it *isn't* skilled labor just doesn't work. (Like BetterHelp -- which has skilled humans involved but does everything it can to make them ineffective, like customer service chat bots, like crisis hotline chat bots, like all the immensely creepy attempts to create childcare and eldercare robots.) But the biggest reason it won't work is because when the algorithm fucks up the executive or aspiring executive whom it mildly inconvenienced won't even get the satisfying catharthis and ego-gratification of screaming at another human being who can't talk back.

Extremely well said; to point a) I hope you’re taking good care of yourself! My concern is inspired by the frequency of EAs being allocated to the kookiest and most poorly emotionally regulated person/s in an organization (shout out to my ex-CEO who churned through them at an amazing rate and now has 3??? instead of the usual 1).

Just a heads up, the guy that invented the Segway is not the person who died on the Segway. The person who died was Jimi Heselden, the British businessman who had bought the company in 2009. In 2010 while riding on a trail, he backed up to get out of the way of a hiker and fell off a cliff. Dean Kamen invented the Segway, released in 2001, and he is still alive.

OK, I want to take that Limitless pin and turn it around to automate the CEO levels. In a parallel universe a Union vote declares all management has to wear them, and then we can fire them one by one, until we have a clean lean machine that runs on its own.

I legit wonder if relying on something like Limitless is gonna lead to some DSM recognized mental illness. Like, not actually having to reference your own memory seems like only a short jump from not _being able to_ reference your own memories. (That said, l've had a similar wonder about GPS for a decade now so my suspicions should be taken with a fair bit of salt).

E
Ember · April 30, 2024

Oh no they're relatively well founded, I drive for my job and despite running some places >100 times, I have trouble remembering the exact way sometimes but I'm getting better the less I use the GPS. This and my inability to remember things though is likely partly my brain doing it's own Funky Dance mind you 🤷

My partner's job now has an AI tool sit in on zoom meetings which listens to the conversation and rates them on "engagement" and other annoying terms. It also gives a summary of what was said in the meeting, which led to the AI meeting assistant sending an email that started with "Point 1: everyone discussed how to turn off the new AI assistant"

November, you ever watched the 2015 show about Gallipoli? As tiring as all the ANZAC glorification gets down here, the show is pretty fantastic https://youtu.be/tecPhfkfcn8 More in the vein of 'all quite on the western front'. "My balls haven't even dropped, what the fuck are we doing shooting each other and dying from shitting too much....!?"

On second thoughts, if everything's getting so weird and alarming up in those soggy isles, perhaps artificially inducing existential crises isn't such a good idea after all....
