Set Your Broken Bones with Mindfulness

For this week's bonus, Riley, Hussein, and November discuss some recent UK news where one of Britain's most tendentious morons has been trying to claim that the Met Police are in cahoots with Hamas somehow and people are expected to take this seriously. We also discuss recent Tory and Labour talking points about replacing sick notes with apps and how apparently people on Statutory Sick Pay have had it too good for too long. This episode nearly broke November and also prompted her to call Hussein 'the South London Guy de Maupassant,' so you'll have to take the good with the bad.

Speaking of planes, I think you guys will get a kick out of the most Australian airline story possible. Thousands of passangers were left stranded yesterday when Bonza had its planes repossessed. https://www.afr.com/companies/transport/bonza-flights-cancelled-as-aircraft-repossessed-20240430-p5fnjf

as someone with p. severe mental health conditions, basically this will just put a lot of us out of work entirely, because without the ability to get time off for those issues we will all get fired! because sometimes people are literally and fundamentally *not capable* of working, which I think some people just genuinely don't understand. If you can't eat, drink and use the bathroom due to a physcological issue how the hell are you supposed to work a job!

I love all of you absolute bloody bin chickens so much, but Milo really is the force that keeps this podcast from just being total depression town. Or maybe that's just because I do soul destroying email & spreadsheet jobs (in Aussie fucken unis, no less).

This is the thing, rich people pay to not get sick. You can pay a few hundred quid to get intravenous stuff to solve your hangover and/or stop you getting a cold.

O
Oliver Elliott · April 26, 2024

Minor quibble: in my experience, guys like Sunak do work when they’re sick. This is partially because for them it’s “work” but more because they’re so egotistical that they think they are absolutely indispensable at all places and times. Edit: but I’m American and maybe it’s different in Britain.

As a person with chronic mental illness sufficient to be declared a disability, I've been on Universal Credit for some time because I am simply too sick to work (I was declared by an assesor to have what's termed "Limited Capability for Work or Work-related activity"). The moment I first read about this speech from Sunak It threw me into a 5 day rolling panic attack at the prospect of being forced back into work or sanctioned because I can't work, which has now become a very real possibility in the future. It literally feels like the Department of Work and Pensions is actively trying to kill me. The possibility of being throw back in when I'm so ill is something I am certain would cause a significant mental health episode should it ever come, one I'm not sure I would even survive, and the possibility of being sanctioned and further emiserated than I already am for not complying makes me feel sincerely suicidal. The feeling of being the exact person that this latest round of Social murder is designed to eliminate as a problem is utterly terrifying and the faux-concerned, gas-lighting language from proponents of this kind of change is so utterly dehumanising and alienating that I feel I can barely stand it. These changes that are coming, if they take hold, *will* kill people, maybe including me. Just hearing someone for once treat it as the cynical social murder that it is is still liberating though, even if just a little. So thank you for talking about it.

Celia Garbacik · April 25, 2024

You have my support, even if it isn't material. Your survival is a worthwhile political goal in itself. Any way you could possibly increase your chance of survival or the quality of your life is well worth it, and is in fact necessary. The current regime is not sustainable, you need to think about it that way and do what you can to outlast it

Re: Palestine: the utility you're providing for me is that you are my primary source of news about geopolitics, because you are selflessly sticking your head under the faucet of media (drinking from the puddle?) and synthesizing it for me so I don't have to look directly at the atrocities. I can only imagine this is extremely painful for you to experience but I really value it - it's why I pay you. And as far as bleeding off energy that might otherwise go toward solving the problem goes, ask Joe Kassabian how genocides get stopped. It's not something you can do or even approach doing.

“It’s part of good medicine to acknowledge the role of the subjective” YES this is my whole problem with AI in medicine (as a GP). For years there’s been this move towards quantifying everything. Like all the different scales and scoring systems used especially in mental health rub me the wrong way because fundamentally mental health (and really the experience of any disease) is subjective and diagnosis and treatment MUST be based around that subjective experience. And now we are developing these systems which basically are ecosystem-destroying vibe machines when any reasonable clinician could figure this out without any of this useless garbage and with the added therapeutic benefit of a real human interaction. Anyway I also have mental health now thanks for sharing

37:00 my entire work life for the last year. Fucking stupid. Fucking sucks. I could work from home and did for 3 years at my last job 2020-2023. At my current job of almost a year The official company line is the sanitized version of the reason we can’t remote work is “ our ceo is a boomer and thinks work from home should only be for ADA accommodations and not being in person lowers moral and productivity” however I’ve been told under the table that the reason we can’t leave is they pay premium for our admin office building and can’t deal with not having it?!? Don’t really understand this attachment to overhead. I mean I work for a nonprofit. Guess they look bad if they’re “small” on paper? I’m sure there’s ma y stupid reasons. If that’s the case then just keep paying for the empty office space like you already do. Only a 1/3 of the building is occupied. They closed programs during COVID and never rehired/reopened them. Anyways it’s also Very conveniently set up that my direct boss has an exception and can work from home. I’ve met her 3 times. It’s a 40 minute commute and gas is $4.50 in Oregon. I spend $40ish a week on gas cuz traffic is hell when I used to wake up and just walk over to my desk FOR THE EXACT SAME JOB. I want to leave but my chronic illness makes switching health insurance a nightmare. The thing that chains you to your job in the good old u s of a. It takes 30 to 90 days for insurance from a job to kick in at most places and I’d run out of meds by then and die. So you have to have a perfect game plan to switch or just roll the dice and pray. Or get fired after falling apart mentally and “underperforming” all things I’ve done since entering my field in 2017. Work autonomy is crucial to my mental health and I doubt I’ll get it any time soon without job hopping. Not to mention they pay me nothing. Oh and my therapist that I’ve seen 3 times total is $190 a session out of pocket. Ha
