Midwestology 3: Do Not Perceive the Precious Moments Citadel
Milo is in Australia and the time zone difference is killing us, but in his absence we convened Joe Kassabian and Francis Horton to discuss the American Midwest with Hussein. We cover the strange post-industrial wasteland of pretty much the entire region, the concept of Precious Moments ceramic figurines (Funko Pops for meemaws), and Hussein reads us a list of supposedly foundational Midwest Emo bands that we have 99% never heard of.

Pim fortuyn was killed by a militant vegan strangely enough
Actual 90s Midwest emo recs: giants chair, Ethel meserve, boys life/Christie front drive split record, state route 522 (from Seattle but, you know...), I wish I, the promise ring up to the first lp. Mineral I guess as well but I personally can't stand them.
BAD SCENE EVERYONES FAULT IS A FUCKING JAWBREAKER SONG FROM DEAR YOU, YA FUCKEN INSOUCIANT OBLIVIOUS PHILISTINES
I am very down for ragging on the UK but I feel like the US podcasters (not Nate) still rely on shit tier jokes about us I could tell you jokes about how people from Alabama are different from Kentucky because of the absolute US media saturation in our culture. But American podcast jokes about Britain are still stuck on 'bad teeth, loicense for that telly, baked beans' etc It's like if my knowledge about the US was still limited to 'Bush dumb, Americans fat' like it was circa 2004
My favorite contribution to midwest emo discussion is that there is a Chinese midwest emo band called Chinese football that got their start covering American football songs
Someone tell Joe; Kwame is out, not paying back the $ he stole & living the high life: A recent headline in the Detroit News "Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's gold-plated luxury life emerges after prison." Haha, Joe managed to combine 2 of Michigan's worst sons into 1 super Michigan Monster. Larry Nassar + Terry Nichols = Larry Nichols, Sexual Predator Who Bombs.
I can't be the pedant who points out that Nate mis-attributes a Jawbreaker song to Lawrence Arms. Someone else do it.
Orgcore has entered the patreon
As a native Indianan myself, some comments: 1) Indiana is the most “Southern” of the non-slave states. It was settled by people from the Deep South in successive waves and has less European immigrants than the rest of the Midwest. Hence the delicious biscuits and gravy and chicken fried steak. 2) For the same reason, Indiana was (as mentioned) home of the Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan and a massive hub for them during the rise of the 2nd KKK (the group resurrected itself every ~30 years and targeted a slightly different demographic). 3) Mitch “the Bitch” Daniels was not just governor but also later University President for Purdue, my alma mater. He was notorious for his “cost-cutting” conservatism and did many terrible things to Indiana (including an initiative to cut funding to our local state hospital, which was a mental institution). During his tenure as president he oversaw the purchase of notorious online diploma mill Kaplan University and its subsequent rebranding as Purdue Global, further diluting any value associated with a degree from there.
Holiday World is pretty cool though
On people who basically own towns there's https://www.jezebel.com/welcome-to-noraville-the-small-maryland-town-rebuilt-b-1832961839 a place in Maryland basically funded at a loss by Nora Roberts who wanted an idyllic small town like in her books. Its one of my arguments for central planning.
Midwestology episode 3: Balthazar speedboat.
I'm gonna need some more of this
to joes point, its not the Henry Ford Museum, or the Ford Museum, or the Henry Ford memorial Museum, its THE Henry Ford, and thats what they put on everything. its an interesting but weird museum
enjoyed this as a listener originally from the chicagoland area
wondering if british subways (sammich place) smells the same as the american ones
When I was working at a gas station in Dayton Ohio, some 15ish year old girls came in, the one said “if she shows you her boobs will you sell us booze?” And pointed at her friend. Gotta wonder if that ever worked for them, didn’t get us for sure
Missouri is not a part of the Midwest. It was a slave state and is an SEC state. I will not be elaborating any further
I'm not against stealing it, but we'll need to restart reconstruction
Not the Hamtramck slander! The suburb that built a racism wall was grosse pointe. Hamtramck is full of yemenis, poles, and hipsters
spending too much time in the minnesota ska and punk scene as a teen/early 20s made me wildly aware of how many nazis minnesota contains x.x although we still have a captured confederate battle flag in a drawer in our capital building, which is neat.
UP mentioned!
Loved Nate’s shout out to The Lawrence Arms but “Bad Scene, Everyone’s Fault” is a Jawbreaker song
I also came here to say that and I'm sure it will annoy Nate.
Love the Netherlands discussion. But Pim Fortuyn was killed by a left leaning (vegan) environmental extremist (till this very day its a little unclear why he killed him) Theo Van Gogh (filmmaker and writer) was killed by Mohamed B. And is now his high security prison for the rest of his life.
yo can somebody steal me one of those armenian lenin posters
I had to look it up to make sure, but my grandma 100% had the Oklahoma City bombing precious moments fireman figure 🪦
I was literally driving east on 8 mile when Joe started talking about Detroit as a post soviet state, and the first thought that popped in my head was "GUN STORE, GUN STORE, LIQUOR STORE, GUN STORE, WHERE THE FUCK ARE YOU TAKING ME" mere seconds before he said it.
So I went to University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and everything y'all said was accurate. I was a creative writing major and hung out with the student film nerds, so those house parties were basically PBR/Miller High Life, bad weed. Also everyone fucked each other resulting in all sorts of drama.
I was under the impression that there's a tradition of various local Midwest Emo bands playing house parties in their area. Thus you get those big playlists portraying that vibe.
things that aren't cocaine i have seen teenagers snort: tang, orange spice tea
"a 13-year-old offered to suck me off for cigarettes" last week? 15 years ago?
My little very Dutch hometown in Iowa tried to start a zoo in a city park basically a shelter house in the 70s, they bought a couple bears (Sis, later Sis II and Smokey) a Bengal tiger (Stubby) some birds sheep and wild dogs, but had to abandon the plan when a guy stuck his arm in the Tiger cage and it damn near bit the whole thing off. The city got sued and it went all the way the state Supreme Court who determined that a city can be held liable for the actions of their Bengal tiger.
Did Joe HAVE to move to the Netherlands? Or Armenia? Or Hawai'i? Or is he just a tumbleweed in denial?
Have me on for a deep dive on Silver Dollar City in Brandson! I grew up in Arkansas and my uncle was a welder for the park for over 20 yrs. We spent every waking moment of school vacation in the park. It’s insane. 1800s racist bullshit and it’s nostalgic af for me now unfortunately lol There’s a tourist cave underneath Silver Dollar City too btw. It’s the same as any. It does have a Funicular to get out of the cave which is cool
Linda belcher is my grandmother with precious moments figurines lol https://youtu.be/if5H7AVX6go?si=K86i-WFitcau_Bnu
Where are all the British people?!? Who are all these Americans?!?
Isn’t modern baseball from Philadelphia?
Unfortunately while there is a midwest emo scene that has a lot of history, as a term "Midwest emo" is just what kids too young to have called it "emo revival" call second- and fourth-wave emo, no matter where the band comes from.
actually, fortuyn was killed by an environmentalist activist opposed to his islamophobia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkert_van_der_Graaf?wprov=sfla1
Hamtramck has gone from mostly Catholic Poles to mostly Muslim; as such, you can see signs for things like "Hamtown Halal Market" and I just think that's fun!
Hussein being the perfect audience stand in for me as someone who also only has peered into the midwest through midwest emo
Hate to go all snopes here but it’s pretty funny - Kwame Kilpatrick had his sentence commuted by Trump on his last day in office, so he’s no longer in federal prison, although he still is on probation and owes millions in restitution.
He’s a minister now https://www.movementalministries.org/about
For some more old Midwest vibes there's the famous photography book IOWA by Nancy Rexroth, which was actually shot in Ohio. https://www.nancyrexroth.com/
Hussein missed a golden opportunity to say, "But the regrets are killing me," when they told him they'd have to talk about Midwest Emo on another episode.
Great to have another midwestology, but when it comes to great place names in the US we have "George" and "Martha" in eastern Washington.
Really enjoyed the end segment and quietly saying "yes" to myself at every band Hussein said while Nate said no. And yeah, Sunny Day is Midwest Emo even if they're not Midwestern. That's just the name of the genre
I love telling people about Holiday World. It’s actually 4 holidays, the 4th of July, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. The best part is the “pepsi oasis” where you can get unlimited pepsi products, primarily drinking so much Mountain Dew.
This is the weirdest thing I’ve ever felt, I’m from Clinton county Missouri and I’ve never heard it mentioned anywhere for any reason other than tornadoes and crime. Cool note on MO wine: before prohibition Hermann MO was the second largest wine production region in the US. AND they (German-wine producing immigrants) single-handedly saved the European grape crop from being wiped out from an aphid epidemic. Cool story. https://www.kcur.org/arts-life/2021-08-17/how-two-missourians-stepped-up-to-save-the-global-wine-industry
I used to work down the street from a combined gun store/ bar/ cigar shop
Gary, Indiana: also the inspiration for Vampire the Masquerade.
I need more midwestology
So my drivers test story is that both me and my girlfriend at the time ran straight through the same stop sign leaving the dmv parking lot and still passed on the basis of flirting with the one guy who did the tests. I love the great state of New Mexico.
As somebody who lives in the Thumb; this is accurate.
Cannot wait to listen to this and get so mad at everyone but Hussein for the disrespect to Mid West Emo
Haha, I goofed about Midwest Emo bands in the Discord and Emo is literally in the episode! This is a dream come true! Bless you, Hussein!
fucked up to hear my hometown called out in the first 3 minutes
We're getting the rare Joe-Hussein configuration and I'm so fucking here for it
Hell Yeah
Holy shit, I literally asked about this the other day and you delivered you sweet, sweet people!
