The Devon Report feat. Kill James Bond

It's the free one!

For this week’s free one, Riley, Hussein, and November are joined by Abigail Thorn and Devon from the Kill James Bond podcast to discuss the recent Cass Review into trans kids’ healthcare in the NHS. Well, call it a review, but it’s actually just top cover for conversion therapy and state-sponsored cruelty against all medical advice. We also discuss career weirdo Brian Rose’s decision to once again run for London Mayor, and examine some recent events in Palestine in which a thing happened involving some drones. It’s a heavy episode but it’s also… a fun one? Somehow?

Relistening to this amidst the transphobic Executive Orders coming out of the White House. The rage and insistence on survival to spite the bastards is heartening.

The urge to deliberately spell Devon's name wrong even though it primarily exists for me in writing is strong...

Thank you Nova, Abi and Devon from the bottom of my heart. You did make me cry at the end but happy(ish) tears. Hearing you say that trans people will always be here no matter what they do to us was what I needed to hear right now. Here’s to a future with more trans kids and trans people ❤️

“you can trans your gender by just thinking about it really hard” is some deep wisdom from Devon. enby solidarity from commiefornia, everyone stay alive and stay fighting

Scientifically illiterate, bigoted nonsense designed to justify violence against trans people. Fuck.

That's it, I need to see Devon in an epic meal time "bacon strips" t shirt and a pair of aviators

As a nonbinary person working in the NHS and questioning… everything at the moment, thank you. Things like this make me feel hopeless but now I have a direction; I’m going to get in touch with my unison rep and find out what our branch is doing to educate around this, and then I’m going to sit down and update my trans issues primer document I have available for my colleagues with an explanation of the report and how to be an ally about it. I’m also one of the few trans people my trust’s equality team actually communicates with (seeing as I had to write the damn resources myself when I came out) so I’ll be talking to them about this too.

This seems like a wild thing to write in Patreon comments but I don't have a suitable platform to share this and I'm hoping activists will be able to add this to their long list of Cass fuckups. This is a relatively small error in the Cass report compared to other issues, but one that appears to only have been picked up internally at the GMC so far and I wanted to highlight it. Paragraph 16.3 of the Cass report (page 193) states: 16.3 General Medical Council (GMC) guidance (GMC, 2020) states that in order to inform that joint decision-making process “the clinician must make an assessment of the patient’s health and be satisfied that any medicine or treatment they offer is clinically indicated (i.e. that in their reasonable professional judgement, a medical procedure or treatment is suitable and useful to reach a specific therapeutic goal with a certain probability)”. The report appears to attribute this quote to the GMC’s 'decision making and consent' guidance, but the above wording does not appear in any GMC guidance. The Cass report may be quietly amended in future to change this.

Completely none of this is ever talked about in mainstream press. I often wonder if someone as articulate and knowledgeable about this were to go on something mainstream and widely watched like question time, what would change. I have a hope for what might change and another thought about how this might impact the person who appeared and how they are characterised.

In America they're trying to use these "reports" as support to open CPS cases against parents who affirm their child's gender identity and seek treatment on their behalf. I can't imagine the trauma of separating a child from a loving parent let alone throwing them in a foster home legally obligated to force them back in the closet.

But also, in Ohio, where we live, there's a newly passed law that bans all trans health care for minors. It just got stayed by a judge last night, but like, come on, man

Very much Cis, very much not British, very much wishing many people read the Devon Report and cop the fuck on to themselves over this. Like Jesus Christ this report sucks in every way, and the worst is my own government is already looking at it and considering how it affects the already shit Trans care here.

The only reason that we got the bare minimum gender recognition act in 2004 was because trans people took the uk government to the European court of human rights. Unfortunately that is the only way we are going to stop the labour party supporting literal torture of children!

Even if they got what they wanted, it wouldn't be enough for them at this point. If they outlawed every kind of social or medical transition (somehow), they'd just panic about 'deep-cover TRAs' and yes-and themselves into inventing a Voight-Kampff machine to uncover eggs among the general populace.

31:22 I work in medical records/compliance in the USA and that’s the most blatant HIPAA act violation I can think of. If I was the doctor or nurse or medical assistant or records person that released those records with my name on them I’d get A) fired B) personally sued C) at BEST barred from the industry, at worst face jail time (if they can prove it was a malicious or intentional release knowing the consequences). Surprised the UK doesn’t have something like this. The only reason America keeps these in my opinion is to have a legal defense on excerting control over people’s medical information. Yes I know the pt HITECH act and etc but that doesn’t stop ind hospitals and clinics and non profits from acting against that as long as they can get away with it on paper. We have rules. It’s just that the rules generally only punish the frontline workers that’s names are attached to the documents. Have me on as a guest I could go on lol (6 yr veteran at this point) (I’m also trans 🏳️‍⚧️)

@ 42:00 and staggered age limits: Well, at age 48 I'm starting to think if this is a GO, then we should go further. Make ALL drugs legal when you hit 50, and from 65 on theft should be okay (as long as you can still physically get away with it). If you make it to 100, you get one free kill.

M

I'm not gonna say a bunch of YouTube and podcast personalities transed my gender but I am gonna say a lot of thoughtful discussion and research about trans experiences made me realize what's been going on my entire life. (Ty Abby and nova and devon.)

Man. The fucking pain in y'all's voices KILLED ME this episode. Parasocial relationships be damned, TF and KJB have been vital to me for the last few years, and I'm a boring cishet white guy. Shit brought me to tears, wish I could do something more than just pay for the Patreon and listen.

b
bryan poetz · April 17, 2024

It's going to be emotional when so much is at stake. Keep an eye out for what you can do for the trans kids in your area. Trans rights are under attack globally, as boring cis people it's our job to speak up in defense. This episode was a welcome reminder of that fact.
