DEADLOCK Watch This #239
One of those many matches where just the idea of it is interesting enough to check it out, and that's exactly what we stumbled upon here.
We take it back to 1995 on this edition of WATCH THIS, to the first ever (?) LIFEGUARD match between the Macho Man & The Nature Boy. It's a packed house at this beach, and you could argue that there's 10 thousand or 100 thousand people there (depending on if you work for WCW or not!). It's a lumberjack match with lifeguards and of course WCW's top guys like DICK SLATER and BUNKHOUSE BUCK.

(Feel free to not read) Had an existential moment in this one; when Alvarez held up the YWF belt I remembered loving observer live for years and the Bryan and Vinny show was fucking amazing and all the great stories and at some point I stopped watching and supporting them and signed up for this Patreon and now everything’s deadlock and DPW for me, idk if Alvarez became the gimmick at some point or what but it’s like all the joy was gone. I’m so fuckin glad deadlock came along and brought the fun back to this space!!
In the WCW crossover episode with Baywatch, one of the plots is Hulk Hogan trying to save the youth center from Ric Flair shutting it down, and the other is a woman discovering she has cancer. It’s incredible television.
I remember the last time Pulse mentioned Sandy Ravage, he wondered what he was up to today and suggested that he's probably doing the exact same shit. He currently just streams Warzone and MLB while playing classic rock, so essentially he is in fact doing the exact same shit.
Bobby Heenan cat calling those women had me rolling
What IS that bump on Flair's back?
AC Slater-ing 😭😭😭
This was an awesome episode, and James reminded me: The world really did change once Alien Ant Farm dropped Anthology 💭
The cast dropped on Apple Podcasts
I love how this watch this has two parts...part 1 being "back in the day when the day was longer" and part 2 being the YWF invasion 🤣 And piling on to what was already posted in the comments and had completely forgotten about until after reading them 😅 the YWF was in fact the old Backyard fed that Bryan Alvarez use to be a part of and it does mark the first time that both Alvarez and Meltzer where at the same wrestling event, however I believe they both mentioned on Twitter having not crossed paths during it.
may i suggest a match thats equally a banger; Billie Kay vs Eva Marie from NXT 2015
I'm pretty sure the guy waving his cane at macho is his dad Angelo poffo
Yeah when they randomly showed him again, the commentators mentioned it was Poffo, who by the way, was being put in the WCW HoF that year. Same class as Wahoo, Dusty, T. Funk, Studd, Inoki and Gordon Solie.
I shit you not, the YWF was Bryan Alvarez's Youth Wrestling Federation. I recognized the belt immediately and it reminded me that I've heard stories from this show for like 20 years from listening to his pods. He was handing out flyers for the F4W newsletter on the beach at the show and if I remember correctly this was the weekend he met Meltzer for the first time.
Someone on the Patreon got a Cameo from him, that was him
There for sure has to be a Kevin Sullivan match on this card that ends up in the water 😂
Operation Seagull on Hogan during the “that’s the wall dude” promo would have changed life as we know it
In ‘95 the Watch This was a little watchier. Please watch Hogan v Vader Strap Match Uncensored 95. Jimmy Hart gets sexy, there’s a detainee AND the most fucked finish of all time. PERFECT for Watch…This.
WCW had some of the coolest venues ever. On a beach, in a mall, at Disneyworld
Its weird seeing Flair look like a normal wrester in 1995. He quickly goes from this to old man that wrestles by 99
and then 2002 happens and he somehow looks even more old
THE BOOOOYS ARE (Out Of) TOOOWWN! But this still pleases my Richard, son
I can confirm that water was a little bit wetter in 1995...
jim duggan as a lifeguard means so much to me mane like look at homie how he lookin
jim duggan as a lifeguard style lumberjack, this one is officially #fortheboys
Ahh yes, 1995, the year of the 25 hour days
There was an amazing Baywatch/WCW crossover episode made in conjunction with this PPV you guys should do a Watch This on. Hogan, Savage, Flair, Vader, and Sullivan are in it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xzBKdLPLb4Q
Jawnny, I love you, but if you and your boys had rushed the ring, they would have sent in Meng to bite all your noses off.
Slim Jim Security is crazy
You guys should definitely watch the tie-in baywatch episode for this show
The same event with the Hogan/Vader cage match where Flair and Anderson attacked Vader after the match and Vader turned face. Leading directly into the WCW Saturday Night that the boys will talk about.
Back when the Watch This! episodes were just a little bit longer…
Holy shit, after looking into YWF, it was the "youth wrestling federation" and fucking Bryan Alvarez was in it!
This is an all timer. YWF! YWF! YWF!
I have no clue what a lifeguard matches rules could possibly be but I can't wait to find out. Let's goooooooooo
For people wondering about pod upload changes: it’s because they have to do it ANY STYLE NOW BABY, ROLL TIDE MOTHERFUCKERS
5 am crew skeee woah it’s 6pm where the hog dippers are safe trip back boys
Also an update on the podcast: Thank you all for being patient with the release schedule at the moment. Running our first WrestleMania week event and then immediately flying to Japan to run 2 events in another country have proven to be quite insane! I also got super sick along the way and it has made things obviously much more difficult. The plan right now is for the latest pod to be out on Sunday, and then we will have the next episode finished and edited and all that late next week. See you then! - Johnny
I’m always first
