XFL 2001 - The First Game: New York/New Jersey Hitmen vs Las Vegas Outlaws
For the first time ever here on our Patreon, and maybe for the first time in many many years for a lot of people, we'll be taking a look at the XFL. More specifically, we'll be watching the very first game that the XFL ever put on. It's the New York and/or New Jersey Hitmen taking on the Las Vegas Outlaws. Vince McMahon & all of the money that he has behind him decided to try to take a stab at this whole 'football' thing, right after the 2001 NFL Superbowl. All the stars are here. Legends will be born. Football will never be the same, again.

i gotta say this is the best SGH ever
Okay but who hates him and why
Hell yeah YEAH
I wish I still had my XFL football that they gave us for buying one of their ppv's
god please do a jr commentary episode
This commentary team is legendary for me. Ventura for obvious reasons, but I'm also a big fan of Matt Vasgersian because he was the commentator on the MLB The Show games for years.
Please watch the Week 2 game between LA and Chicago, crazy double OT game with JR and Jesse Ventura on commentary. BTW. why do you hate him?
This was so fun to listen to, I'd absolutely love if, like UFC, every now and then we watch a football game. Don't even have to be XFL, just a random game. Maybe some gridiron classics?
It’s been 24 years since this game happened and we still haven’t figured out who hates him.
This was the first game of football I have ever watched and I still haven't seen a full game of football.
Ok just checked the league record, there was a Chicago vs LA game that went into DOUBLE OVERTIME. Shit looks kinda sick
It ran even longer beyond that because of a player having to be stretchered off and a power outage, and it ended up delaying a heavily hyped SNL episode hosted by Jenifer Lopez. After that, NBC instituted a policy that XFL coverage would be cut off at 11pm EST, regardless of whether or not the game was over
53:57 is such a fucking god tier moment omfg XD
If more games were like the game they switched to the XFL could've been a football G league that shit felt like i left a 5 year old football game to go watch the Superbowl
Jesse ventura is my favorite deadlock guest. Number 7 gets the grenade in the helmet the submarine with holes in it and fuck it im putting a light bulb in his mouth
Might actually be my favourite deadlock anything... WHO HATES HIM!
this was awesome. if you stretch these UFC id you gotta find the best game, worst game or just something in the middle of the season to see how production progressed, then come back to the Championship right before the NFL season actually starts this year
Week 2 game of Chicago Enforcers at Los Angeles Xtreme is widely regarded as the best XFL game. Would be fun to watch you guys watch that.
gotta be the most consistently funny SGH of all time. Last year we were on a quest to find a good Undertaker main event, this year we're on a quest to find out who hate him
welcome to the next non wrestling saga of somthings going to happen I cant wait
Y'all should watch that Chicago and Orlando game, shit looked heat
You guys definitely need to do a game with JR and Jesse. I need to hear that dynamic and the bits Jawnny can come up with.
This shit had me gassed ngl boys
Y’all should watch some IFL for a modern league with fighting and shenanigans
For the record, Rod Smart wanted “They Hate Me” but was told that was too long. And the absolute legend wouldn’t be deterred.
Rod “He Hate Me” Smart being a former Carolina Panther legend and James not realizing it was so disappointing lol 🥲
This is the first American football game I’ve ever watched in full
I love how WWE always talk about how they couldn't do the invasion properly due to Time Warner contracts being too high, yet they started an entire football league
They were seen as too high BECAUSE Vince started a football league
"They should play Mo Bamba" LMAOOO
Someone's probably mentioned it, but the NFL does sometimes switch broadcasts of the game is a super blowout. Only areas that would keep the og feed are the local markets for the teams in the blowout
i was listening to JR’s 2nd book a couple weeks back and he talks about how much he loved doing commentary (and also how much jerry lawler just did not give a shit) for the XFL and how it was pretty much a dream come true so i hope you guys check out an XFL game with his commentary cause he seemed pretty fired up from the clips we saw
HE HATE ME still the goat. Crazy how much the XFL did in terms of production that changed the NFL. XFL was the first to do the in camera by wire over the field.
I remember my dad was excited about this. He got me into wrestling and thought this would get me into football too. Halfway through, my dad stormed out of the room and never came back. The next day, I asked what happened and he said "They were making fun of football!"
I remember this night. Back when I had a ferret and a huge fever watching this
I'd love for you guys to be the first people to watch all the XFL I doubt even Vince has seen all of it
this made me start watching james' nfl 2k5 franchise mode
legit thought the one cheerleader had the same name as Rachel's Italian BF on Friends lol
Seeing the placement of the cameras here and comparing it to current day NFL is crazy, the production was next level.
I'm with James, the jackets for the XFL were nice as hell.
I’m like twenty minutes in and we’ve got to get at least one more game from the boys one day. Maybe the million dollar game? I’m crying laughing
What're are the chances we get full episodes of shows where wrestlers make cameos after this?
The only American football I've ever watched was the nL Puppybowl so this will be an experience.
That loud "BITCH" sounded just like Vince and now I just imagine him screaming from the skybox.
I am but a simple Bruv, who does not understand American football. But god this was hilarious
If you guys watch another game, you should find one of the later ones where Jesse Ventura tries to beef with Rusty Tillman or when they advertise a skit where they go in the cheerleader locker room at half time.
Well now you gotta watch the JR game right
I lost my shit when they referenced "I PUT THE TEAM ON MY BACK DOE".
"FUCK YOU GUMBY" has been in my brain FOR YEARS
i laughed every time they asked who hate him
The funny thing is how the three of them were making fun of the NY/NJ QB dropping the ball saying it was heavy or slippery. The ball they used was actually really bad to use. It was so bad they later would have to sand the balls for better grip on them
We talked about that in this video :)
Need to watch the game when Jeff brohm dies then comes back, “do I or do I not have a pulse, lets play football”
Gimmick infringement: in Feb 2001 he was still called “Sugar” Shane Helms.
I would absolutely buy a PepBoys Deadlock shirt. Big and Tall sizes please!
we need the million dollar game now
Also shoutout to Carolina Panthers legend He Hate Me
The first 10 minutes of this was the Avengers Endgame of Deadlock
He hate me WAS in the espn 2k5! James even used him as a backup for David Arquette in his franchise, and changed his in game name to Mr. He-Hate-Me (I'm only 30 minutes so if James finds this out later into the SGH my b)
I was thinking the same thing lmao
Dick Butkus world order
this is what it’s all about.
Week 2's game is legendary. JR/Jesse on commentary for Chicago/LA. Don't want to say too much else but it's a game that changed the league forever
15:46 Dude just straight-up hit him with a Burning Lariat
That fucker trying to interview the down marker broke me
The X stands for XTREME!
Real talk, I fucked with 2020 XFL. Then everything went to shit and it died lol.
I love spring leagues. Birmingham iron, Tampa vipers. Ma fuckin Birmingham stallions
Who hates him?
He does, c'mon keep up dude.
First time I'll ever be watching an american football/handegg/armored rugby game in my life. Let y'all know my thoughts later on.
holy shit lmao
Fast forward to now, we've had three iterations of the XFL, a new version of the USFL, to what we have now in the new UFL. And yet the problem: nobody is really interested in watching because it's just simply not the NFL.
There simply aren't enough dads to fuel that many leagues we reaching critical dad depletion
Man the wikipedia about this is crazy, "Stadiums featured trash-talking public address announcers and scantily-clad cheerleaders who were encouraged to date the players. Instead of a pre-game coin toss, XFL officials put the ball on the ground and let a player from each team scramble for it to determine who received the kickoff option. The practice was dubbed "The Human Coin Toss" by commentators" "In the face of declining ratings, NBC and the XFL aggressively promoted that the week 6 game between the Orlando Rage and Las Vegas Outlaws would feature a behind-the-scenes visit into the locker room of the Rage's cheerleaders at halftime. "
Pep Boys are back in town!
I've never seen an American football game in my life. What an experience.
only the deadlock boys can get me to watch an american football game
Watching this has given me great insight into how Bobby Heenan must have felt when Mike Tenay was calling lucha matches. "He Hate Me grids the wide liner into the pocket zone!". I'm Irish, I know nothing about America Ball...
Next XFL game needs to be whatever one had undertakers “you know what’s badass” promo
3 and a half quarters of a stinker with constant Ventura impressions, penalties and He Hate Me, into the most insane 5 minutes of the best XFL game of all time, this is definitely gonna be an early contender for SGH of the year IMO
clearly the XFL didn't work out, but you kinda gotta give credit to the idea. If the attitude era could make wrestling start to pop off again, in theory that same attitude could be applied to football to get eyes on the product. Vince starting "the attitude era of football" is a really funny way to put it. Also, when the XFL came back in 2020, I was actually kinda excited about it. I have no plans of watching the Rock's UFL or whatever the hell that bullshit is.
Fun Fact He Hate Me AKA Rod Smart actually played in the NFL after the XFL; he played 1 season for the Eagles and 4 seasons for the Panthers. Also he's the cousin of former Eagles 1st round pick and huge bust "FredEx" Freddie Mitchell.
A month before this game the XFL flew an XFL blimp over the Oakland Coliseum during an NFL playoff game. They were planing to fly it over the Coliseum during the AFC Championship game too but a few days before the game the pilots lost control of the blimp and it crashed onto a boat; no one was hurt but the blimp caused millions in damage to itself and the boat it crashed on.
Fuck the UFC Tier when we getting the football tier?
Woo-hoo!
The boys should definitely get matching He Hate Me XFL jerseys
mid game trades is the funniest idea ever
DOES ANYONE HERE KNOW WHY HE HATE HIM
So you guys talk about how long they had to practice. It was not nearly as long as you think. The teams got drafted in october 2001. Teams had 3 months to train with a coach and team they had never been with before. Not nearly enough time to get any real cohesion, especially in the lines, as was pointed out. To give you an idea of how fucked the whole thing was heres this bit of info. lot of people know the fun fact about Tommy Maddox right? wins the Million Dollar Game, gets league MVP, goes back to the NFL after the XFL folds and is a backup for the steelers and gets a super bowl ring right after being NFL comback player the year in 2002? Tommy Maddox WASNT EVEN DRAFTED. He was put on the LA Extreme as a ploy to get city interest due to the college he went to back in the day being close to LA. The dude who ended up being the league MVP at the end of the season didnt even get *drafted* by one of the teams.
Ron Merkenson
One thing to watch for some insight on how the 2001 XFL went would be the ESPN 30 for 30: This was the XFL. It shows alot of behind the scenes stuff and alot of failures of what happened
NBC switching the feed and never going back was pretty based
he hates me might be my goat
It's so funny to me that the NFL adopted so much of the XFL's presentation. Sky cam, sideline interviews, and mic'd up players weren't a thing before this.
REAL PIGSKIN
Looks to me we will see another XFL with JR and king in the future. Let’s go
is the video quality fucked up or am I have a stroke seeing squares on James face?
