I very nearly walked out of this movie. The whole thing felt AI generated. Not a single aspect was interesting or original.
Liv knows how to distract Jake from his crash out…with Weezer.
The character finishing everyone's sentences is driving me insane
Hey Jake! With all love and care, I’d like to second that bit of advice you spoke about at the start of the pod. I’d like to think that good humour always comes from a place of insight and restraint. Just being more conscious about where you insert your voice will help give it impact when it lands. I’m more of a julianhead myself but I appreciate the roles each of you occupy. That balance is what drew me in the first place.
Jake has become utterly intolerable. He’s abrasive, loud, unfunny, and never shuts up. Give someone else a chance to speak, and bring the volume down, you’re not clever. Might be time to unsubscribe.
Great year for super exciting movies that are actually super boring
I'm so glad you folks are dunking on this film as much as it deserves
BRAD! How do you not know about the story of Nixon showing Jackie Gleason alien bodies?! That’s a classic disclosure story for the last 40 years or something. Gotta go back and hit the NHI study books, my friend haha (all tea no shade js, love you guys lol)
I wish they’d cast Bryan Busby the Kansas City weatherman of KMBC 9 rather than an actor. ‘I think there’s gonna be a chance for aliens… and rain!’
Busby was my weatherman for all my childhood and a good portion of my adult life. He did a presentation at my grade school. He was almost doing a stand up set. He was the best guest speaker we ever had.
This is hands down the angriest I’ve ever heard Jake 😭
Look every criticism levied against this movie in the episode is incredibly valid, unfortunately I still loved this movie lmao
Never leave any silence Jake.
That stately wheelchair alien at the end was for Invader Zim fans. He’s the tallest!
War of the Worlds is so fucking good. I think that's the general consensus, too.
Hunks of walnut shells are raining around me, and my multivitamin tastes like blood
If you change aliens to god and the alien tech to demons or something this is kinda just a faith film.
Jake have you listened to the band No Pressure? They’re bringing back the fun era of pop punk and their new record is so sick
I have NEVER heard Jake this mad. A terrible movie made for a standout episode
Erm? Another realistic depiction of a panic attack? 5/5, 10/10 no notes, give it all the oscars, make it required watching for every millenial with impostor syndrome!
I thought it was an overly long Stellantis car advert: Alfa Romeo, Jeep, RAM, etc.
when does Francisco Lindor come in
Deus Extraterrestrial
The day I saw this I googled "macguffin" to explain the film to someone, and learned the plot device terms "handwavium," "big dumb object," and "phlebotinum"
Disappointed in Brad for not catching that the movie was referencing the Jackie Gleason/Richard Nixon legend
Jake is 100% Matt Damon in the SNL Weezer dinner party argument sketch.
Furthermore, Emily Blunt sounds like Jake doing Mark Wahlberg when she's mind-tricking the cop.
"Keep watching the skies! I mean skies!"
Would love to hear Jake's Takes (TM) on Spielberg's Taken miniseries from the early aughts. It's been a while since I've seen it so it may not hold up to the nostalgia, but it has to be so much more fulfilling than whatever this garbage was.

Aww man I enjoyed this movie for entertainment value. It was like a children’s movie and that worked well enough for me. Also I like aliens 👽
Buns arse doo doo buns lmfaoooooooo
The Discriminator sounds like an HR office's AI
This movie was truly poop from a butt. The CGI animal aliens genuinely pissed me off so much. I felt SO bad for my boyfriend as a 'alien head'...watching him slowly realize the movie was trash was heartbreaking 💔
As a fellow “alien-head” and generally a Spielberg fan, I was shocked tbh. There was SO much wasted potential in this concept.
🎵Yeah I’m talking movies/yeah I’m talking themes Yeah I’m talking mcguffins/yeah I’m talking scenes #bars
Me and all my friends who've seen it are in agreement that the budget is the only thing distinguishing it from a Neil Breen movie.
Had to Google Emily Blunt’s car after listening to this episode! Alfa Romeo Giulia Q4 is a gorgeous car, but surprisingly affordable. New ones start in the $40k range, used ones can be purchased in the $20k-$30k range! A little pricey for someone on a $45k salary, but somewhat attainable! Sad to see it get destroyed at the end!🥲
Thank god you review this movie because I wasn’t going to watch it. When I saw the trailer, I thought it was fantasy when I animals go in front of the little girl in the trailer I thought of fantasy but was told it has to do with aliens
"I mean, Ketamine, c'mon" Spielberg just totally gets it Also re the "news" clips at the end, the different nation's troops ON THEIR PHONES while clearly deployed, stawp!!
I’ve just looked up the four star Roger Ebert review. If you scroll down to the comments section and most people are rating it 2/3 out of 5.
Spielberg also EP’d Men in Black! Feel like that is important context here but I lack the analysis to explain why
I feel exactly the same way about Dinosaur Jr that jake feels about weezer
man, everyone's adhd has been flaring up last week or so. would love to see travis trying to keep jakey on track in this one :D god i love this podcast
This movie had the dumbest aliens Hollywood put out since Signs. A peculiarly stupid alien species that had to raise two human translators in order to give a whistleblower interview to legacy media, with a message that boils down to: “Have more empathy, humans”.
"We aliens have such superior empathy that we have decided to kidnap two children and conduct magic surgery on them in order to force them to become vessels for our message for humanity to have more empathy."
They toured actual local news stations to possibly use as filming locations but thought actual TV stations looked too funky for the movie, lol
The most annoying part of the movie is the idea of a weather person who wants to be a reporter. You have to go to college specifically for meteorology. No one who wanted to be a news person would get a degree in meteorology. Like guys
If Jake becomes the main host I’m unsubscribing
I watched this movie last night to listen to this and I regret it terribly
Never change Jake Rockatansky
Looked up other reviews just to see, and a thread on r/movies shows it got stellar reviews from a lot of prominent sources. But the actual redditors all say it’s a piece of shit boring slog haha.
They're just pandering to Spielberg
Yeah this film really was dogshite wasn't it
Yeah! I agree.
I think Spielberg stopped being “beloved” in any way to me after I learned about the transcripts between him and George Lucas. Long drawn out convo of just how underage Indiana Jones love interest should be. Would it be hotter if she was closer to 13 or 15? Those two brain geniuses really hashed it out.
There’s a Behind the Bastard episode discussing 1950s ‘Men’s Adventure Magazine’s’ that lays out a pretty compelling case that those and not the 1930’s pulps are where GL and SS got those particular ideas from.
The movie might be awful, but this episode was entertaining as HECK
"Ground truth" is a real phrase and describes going to a real world place that has been viewed on a computer (or back in the days, on the paper map). For example, this area on the map looks like a forest, but if you need to know for sure, Ground truthing is going out to see the actual forest. You can do many of these comparisons to produce an accuracy assessment which means "what percent of your computer image/model is representative of what is actually on the ground?" And also determine false positives and false negatives.
Alt auto-cue suggestion: "Shoveling the Alien" by David Bowie:
I'm not going to watch the movie but I will listen to this episode repeatedly.
I was so perplexed during my first viewing, thought maybe I was being too harsh, nope. Also the discourse around movies at this time was so frustrating, where we had large publications praising Spielberg saying this was a towering achievement and then backhandedly complimenting this fresh crop of filmmakers who were doing big numbers and making waves. Just be honest! I had a similar feeling to the Odyssey, but I know I’m in the minority there, I think it’s also pretty bad despite some set pieces. Hold your heroes accountable!
Nah the Odyssey had some issues with how he had to edit it down to be under 3 hrs cause of his obsession with 70mm Imax. Was still enjoyable but some stuff was comical in how things just sort of happened out of context cause of how scenes were edited
Jackie Gleason is who Nixon supposed showed alien shit to
Liv Agar. I’m so excited about this episode because I have no plans to see this movie. Liv Agar.
Love how desperate Jake is to talk about anything other than the movie
I saw this right after it was released and walked out maybe 2/3 of the way through. Listening to this I realized I don’t remember anything about it other than it defeating my patience.
This film follows the old Hollywood tactic of over hyping shitty movies for summer release and relying on the average moviegoers' lack of long-term memory that prevents them from remembering the last time they fell for the same trick.
I hated this movie so much and also hated I couldn't find any alien conspiracy knowers with media literacy to listen to complain about it, so thank you QAA
Also Jake doing a random Barenaked Ladies bit followed by "that's a Canadian band" and Liv's "yes, thank you" got me laughing so good
Listen lmao, this movie has so many problems, I agree, David Koepp is a genuinely awful screenwriter, but all three of you are giving "person who's never seen a movie" on this ep. Everything you claim the movie never explains is absolutely answered in the film and I don't really understand why y'all are so surprised that Steven Spielberg, for better or worse, made a Steven Spielberg movie?
"Daniel and Margaret have no chemistry" were we watching the same movie???
I’m not even a big Spielberg or Weezer fan but Jake calling their works “content” made me feel physical and psychic pain.
When I first heard about this movie, I thought it would be at least a spiritual sequel to Close Encounters. I assumed it would open with “disclosure” and the film would be the story of the aftermath in a world that knows aliens are real. Would have been much more interesting.
The ‘Nixon and other person scene’ is a reference to conspiracy theory that he showed aliens to actor Jackie Gleason.
Talking about all these good Steven Spielberg films has definitely decided what I'll be doing with my Sunday, after I'm done with this episode of course, Spielberg triple feature Close Encounters of the Third Kind then ET then War of the Worlds.
Jake, I totally forgot about ‘Edge of Tomorrow’. Loving the rewatch! Thanks. 😊
did spielberg read empress theresa? the cardinal is like the fox lol
Oh my god, how does anyone know Empress Theresa 😂 What a """"book""""
Terrible movie. Total ripoff of Escape to Witch Mountain (1975).
I LOVED that movie as a kid! Tony and Tia! There was a sequel too if I remember correctly!
Every time I read the title of this movie I picture the guy from the Warriors clinking his bottles and shouting: "DiscloOosure Daay!"
We HAVE to talk about Jane: I’m convinced Bono’s Daughter’s character was built around her being irish and using her actual accent, the studio Had Notes, they changed just her nationality and ergo, a bunch of nun action that makes no sense in contemporary america
I am being reminded of each and every gripe I had, but being soothed by hearing Jake get so mad he starts white boy rapping
Currently enjoying this (the pod, not the movie)... Also... am I the only one who still brain hears/hopes to hear the old QAA intro? Following up: Tones... "What's up QAA listeners?" "The fun and games have begun..." "I found a way to connect to the Internet".... IMO, one of the best podcast intros I've ever heard...(for timeline of 2016-present).
You are the only one. And all recordings have been erased. When you die… it dies.
You must do what you feel is right of course Jake.
Oh... don't go to war, Stephen ? Well damn, why didn't we think of telling them that before?? All this time we were being couped and killed for geopolitical economic power of the wealthiest psychos throughout history AND ALL WE HAD TO DO WAS SAY "HEY, STOP THAT"?!? Thanks old man, we'll pass it on to the philosophers while you stay wandering in your field pasture with the gate properly locked this time so the public can observe a wistful fossil walking among its own habitat from a safe distance. - I had no doubt this movie was gonna be shit, the trailer made no effort to disguise what it is, no attempt at intrigue, plus his comments while on publicity tour sounding like it could easily have been another Lauren Bobert clip doing the dumbest political distraction stunts in our sordid species' history. And this, my dearest friends and strangers, are certified ground truth pixels. Peace the fuck out. Watch War Horse or the classic A.I. with Robin Williams instead. Or Obsession.
Now that's a review ! 🤛
Hey Jake! I organized my cassette collection and found a weezer tape which begs the question, HOW LONG did I use a walkman for??
I hated this movie! Can’t wait for the discussion!!
I saw this film and was so disappointed with it. If anything it should have been set years ago before the internet
i’m so happy i didn’t have to see this movie
I love alien stories and QAA's Planet Serpo episode. Spielberg should have made *that* movie.
Idk if I missed a certain moment of context where we started shouting out Liv Agar but whatever it is I agree wholeheartedly!
It’s been a few years, but it really took off when she mentioned it in the show.
The Nixon story was supposedly him showing alien bodies to Jackie Gleason.
Why Jackie Gleason? Whyyyy?!
such pros. I giggled
Saw this shit on holiday in Norway and it was the worst part of my trip
Good! Glad you had a good trip lol or better than this movie
“Buns ass doo-doo butt” Such harsh words from our sweet sweet Jake!
My ears were ringing after that one
Fuck yeah
Movie night! Movie night! Movie night!
I was waiting for this!!! Fuck that last scene of the movie!
My God, I hated this movie. I even swore in front of my son about it. Oh, and Liv Agar.
you want them to learn it from a trusted source. also Liv Agar
First!!
Or close anyway 😏
Liv Agar!
