Evil Neuroscience Part 2: ECCO Chamber (Premium E336)
In part 2 of this 2 part episode, this continued examination of John C. Lilly's life leads Jack into a sensory deprivation tank.
Building upon the research done by Canadian psychologist Donald Hebb, Lilly's use of sensory deprivation tanks (and a lot of hallucinogens) led him to develop the concept of the Earth Coincidence Control Office (ECCO). ECCO would ultimately consume Lilly, dramatically altering the course of his life and he would later attribute it to nearly ending it on a few occasions.
Along the way, prolonged isolation of graduate students who need to be "toileted", elements of Lilly's research end up in a CIA interrogation manual, "Tron is us", and rules for humans such as: You are expected to expect the unexpected every minute, every hour of every day and of every night.

Mighty Boosh!!!!
They did a Twilight Zone episode on this. Worth the watch.
John C Lilly died on September 30 2001. Maybe the stress of 9/11 did him in.
John C Lilly must've gotten up to some incredibly crazy shit in the Outlast timeline
There's a whole Quebecois horror game franchise inspired by the experiments done by Ewan Cameron
So Matthew Perry's death *could* have been the result of cognitohazard?
Let Jake write the scripts reboots and/or sequels? Hell, yes!
As a huge Fringe fan, I'm deeply disappointed that Jack didn't end up in an alternate universe similar to, but not exactly like our own during the deprivation tank session.
42:00 for a minute there I thought I was listening to a part of the “AI Psychosis” episode I missed during a large language X linear algebra induced fugue state.
The Synanon series by TrueAnon covers some of this from a different angle. One thing they pointed out is that like the technology industry we know today the field of psychology was funded and founded on the data gathered for the military & intelligence industrial complexes. Which tracks.
I only knew these tanks from the video game "Receiver 2" where you have to go into one to enter the dreaming. An endless series of skyscraper roofs where you fight an information based life-form known as the Threat (aka the liberal mind virus).
I played Echo constantly in the 90's!
These episodes rocked
Enjoyed these episodes a lot, the subject matter is pretty insane, I'm gonna go through the reading list on it! Small note though, I feel like Jack should work on their delivery a bit, it's slightly monotone
Yeah, it sounds very much like reading a script. For audio format you really gotta make it sound more conversational
Vitamin K is the name of my new Elon Musk parody band
John Lilly watching Johnny Mnemonic and pointing at the screen. This guy actually invented all movies.
I'm only a third of the way through the episode, but how the hell did Jake not make a Johnny Mnenonic reference?
We've militarized the ferrets. We call them Lockheed-Martens
Ba-boom tish!
Altered States 👉 Loved that film !
I was a nerdy kid obsessed with computers in the 80s who had a blast watching _Tron_, but the idea that one could have a religious revelation from watching it is wild
Better than getting one from Lawnmower Man. 😝
As an anthropologist working in multispecies studies, who argued for elephant personhood, and who has long been fascinated by heretical scientists of the psychedelic, I just wanted to applaud Jack for this peculiar journey into cognitive ethology, language, and consciousness.
You know nothing of The Crunch! You've never even been to The Crunch!
I really, really enjoy these biology episodes with Jack.
Having lived in Montreal, I am not at all surprised that “squirrels on snowshoes” was a group hallucination.
Ah, John Lilly. The Elon Musk of his day (great mind destroyed by ketamine).
Cant remember the last time I was this excited for a part 2
I've met Lilly in different bodies at every rave or hippie thing I've been to.
I learnt at festivals Hippies are mainly middle or upper class far right to Nazi and despite lack of sentable haircuts the ponderance of crystal and the terrorism by spoken poetry. Daddies money just does that to people. I tried to talk to a hippy chick "just back" from travelling in India, she didn't know what the East India Company or the British Raj were but they couldn't have been bad things and she had no issues with Churchill....no she had not talked to a single Indian that wasn't service staff
I'd love to see the CIA stuck down a Weezer rabbit hole. Radditude will break them.
I'm so happy Jake is a member of the Maturin truthers club. On a related note, Welcome To Derry better give me my freaking turtle god!
I love how they present the idea of ECCO, and then mention that some who are inclined toward paranoia could be totally fucked up just by knowing about it. 😂 Whoa! Sorry to the paranoid.
Level 1 cognitohazard
With ECCO, Valis, and systemspace it's weird how often this idea of God keeps popping up
Second 🥈 ?
Haven’t listened yet but I loove a float tank!
