Our Life 2: Type-In Feature Update
Shawna implemented a very fancy new way of letting people add their own information into the story and now it'll be possible to input more complicated details we couldn't add using the normal choices/flag system ✨
The prologue will be updated to allow you to determine exactly where you moved from, your race, and your nationality heritage! You can't talk about it with the other characters then, however Moments will be written with this feature in mind. So scenes are going to come up eventually where you can share with Tamarack and Qiu your own culture or let them know your family comes from the same place as one of them.
And this feature will be used for various other things, too.

This was a nice feature. Especially since the previous OL had talked about the ethnicity of Lizzie but not the MC. I hope there’s more inclusivity in the future, like being on the asexual/ace spectrum, clothing preference, and maybe even allergies!

Love it! Quick question, what if I want the father to be of mixed race for my MC? Would that be a detail that can be incorporated?
You can type in the two races with a hyphen, but the game won't be able to track it very well and will always refer to it as a single thing. I'm sorry for that.

Small thing from an Interactive Fiction background (writer/reader) that does features like this: Please be careful around how it will be capitalized (using a sample in the prompt if necessary). Unless you're going to be automating capitalization (or decapsing) as necessary, it's frustrating to get into a scene and type, say, 'Purple' as a favourite color, and then every time it ever comes up mid sentence it now is capitalized. It's an easy mistake for a writer to make and a *pain* to go back and fix up later.
I agree; my suggestion would be to have an option in the menu that lets you fix these later on, if you make a mistake.
This is a really nice feature! Being able to decide where you're from and your heritage is exciting, but I'm especially curious about the race option shown here. I gravitate toward writing mixed race characters, as I'm multiracial. Whether it's a simple feature or more complex, I'll be very happy when this feature is implemented. Thank you for always giving us more ways to express ourselves and our MCs! ❤️

Maybe! But there will only be a handful of menus like this in the entire game either way.

The only language she knows in-game is English to make the script doable for me to write, but the game is never gonna say she was specifically born in the US. You can headcanon other places.

Our Life B&A had a lot of customization far beyond a typical VN, but I can see Our Life N&F will be on a whole other level entirely! Such a cool feature!!!

I remember asking about something like this before! So glad it's in the game! But I'm just a little slow so could I maybe get an explanation for the race/heritage thing? How are they going to act differently? Or, just, like, how are they different? Sorry, again, I'm just kinda slow.
We can't determine the MC's race purely by skin tone and your race doesn't always determine your nationality. For example, maybe your MC is Asian racially, but your extended family mostly comes from Germany and you'd like both of those to be noted. I don't know all the times and places where those details will come up, but it's something worth acknowledging just in general.
I know it would be a lot of work but is there any way of adding a list to choose from instead of writing your own or being able to copy and paste works into the game because I have bad dyslexia so spelling isn't a easy thing for me and I'm sure there may be other people who would have a hard time too.
No, not for these types of choices, I'm sorry. There's hundreds to thousands of things people would use. We couldn't even attempt to list them. But if you hit the arrow to see more options you can answer the question without typing in an answer and can just know in your own mind what you want it to be!

I'm afraid not. Opal only knows one language, so it can't really be worked in that the MC has a different native language. Maybe when they're older they could study to learn a second language though.
