The Build Begins!

The first build of what I hope to be a series of ultra realistic 1/24 scale model car to RC conversions has begun! For this project I'll be building the iconic 1965 Shelby GT350 Mustang.

Unlike other recent projects, this build will use the chassis piece that is included with the model kit rather than 3D printing one. An increased challenge but the result should be epic!

If you'd like to follow along and build a car similar to mine, I'll be documenting this build in detail to hopefully make it as easy as possible for others to do the same. I've created a new tag and page here on Patreon. All posts related to this project will be conveniently posted there.

Here's a list of all the parts I've used for this build so far. More stuff will be posted as the build progresses.

Model Kit Use

Revell 65 Shelby GT-350 Mustang (Note that other Revell 1964, 1965, and 1966 Mustang model kits will work as well. These include but are not limited to Revell 66 Shelby Mustang GT 350H #85-2482, 65 Ford Mustang 2+2 Fastback #07065, 64 1/2 Mustang Convertible #85-4019, and 66 Shelby GT 350 R #07193.

Make sure your chassis piece looks the same as this one.

Do you still sell the front suspension & steering printing parts and the MA10 Axle 3 link suspension for this model Revell 65 Shelby GT-350?

The front suspension is available as a STL download only, however we can custom print a suspension assembly for you upon request, along with any other parts specific to this project. Please send an email to luke@makeitrc.com

Unless you are racing, why not use NiCad batteries they are much safer all the way around

I'm not aware of any NiCad batteries that are both small and light enough to work in a car like this while still offering the same or better performance and especially run time of a LiPo. LiPo batteries have become the standard for micro RC so naturally that's what I tend to use. While there is a slight risk of the cells becoming hot and catching fire, this is almost always a result of misuse or severe damage from a crash (no worries about that with a car like this). Following manufacturer instructions including never charging a LiPo unattended and charging/storing batteries in a LiPo safe bag or box will further prevent any issues.

Thanks, I was thinking it should be around there.

This is cool. Which RPM are you using for the motor?

I went with the 3V 1k RPM motor.

You know, I didn't even think of using the DasMikro stuff. Looking forward to this build! This has inspired me to actually pulled my shelved Lightning build. I think within the next week I'll be posting some updates for it to the Facebook page and SBG Forums as well.

As long as you don't need the car to be fast, those micro components are awesome. Good luck with your build. 👍
