EARLY EPISODE: Orde Wingate and the Chindits: Part 2
The conclusion to the crazy, diseased story of a man and his Chindits.

I've just listened to this series again, and I can recommend a YouTube called LordHardThrasher who has done a good job going through the Burma campaign. You probably won't agree with everything he says, but he is refreshingly honest about Orde Wingate.
One of the glider pilots on these operations was one Jackie Coogan, aka Unle Fester from the Addams Family.
Greetings from Kuwait (AJ). Great episode. The comments on the Rangers are a bit dubious; Darby’s Rangers (MN’s 34ID) are the root of the Ranger Regiment
Instead of the word conservative you could say someone's frugal, and sexually someone is vanilla if they're just basic.
Nate's right about 'Tusk'
cómo se dice "up down machine"?
as a person who has lived in Italy for the past 3 years, it's uppa downa macchina in italian
That music bit hit home - wrote my history thesis on Duran Duran and motley crue and was ground zero for those bands in Sydney when they were starting out.
Boys the question from the legion was top notch this week, have you ever considered doing a LLBD Balthasar Speedboat? Vibes only
Trying to find Nate’s Redwall joke for my fiancé. Can someone point me in the general direction?
Tangent starts around 18:20.
I think the Imphal Campaign would make for a great two parter. It's the follow-up to the Chindits and has an absolutely vicious fight over a tennis court towards the end.
Agreed. They called that campaign "the Road of Bones" for a reason!
You know, when I was stationed at Cannon I only heard about the Chindits by word of mouth. I saw the street sign on base… clearly who ever named the street had no idea how unsuccessful they were.
42 year old metal head and bass teacher here: duran duran fucking rule.
"Chuckle Fuckery" is my new favorite saying.
This episode had me reading the wikipedia article for the Chindits, I just wanted everyone to know that it prominently features a photo of a column of Chindits crossing a river, packs slung, wearing slouch hats, khaki shirts and not much else. They're bare-ass naked from the waist down, the photo caption reads, "A Chindit column crosses a river in Burma; men suffering from dysentery often went naked."
"Jokes on you, I can't shit myself; I have no pants!"
Ooo, Nate baby. Don't take the brain tonic that late....
Don't worry it's Tennessee.
Hell yeah Mother Love Bone! I'm sure Alice In Chains started as a more glam-y band called Alice N' Chains too (but I read that once like 15 years ago so could be off and am too lazy to verify)
Out of the 8 tapes for a penny I got through the mail i got in 6th grade, Duran Duran's Rio and the two Weird Al albums have held up the best.
Louis Mountbatten deserves a show... a product of inbreeding and fuckery. He had a career of failing upwards. Managed to get 1000 Cdns killed in <2 hours as Dieppe in '42, fuck up in Burma, embarrassed the Empire at the Potsdam conference, then managed to get millions of Hindus and Muslims killed by bungling the creation of India and Pakistan.... and don't forget about leaving Kashmir "for them to work out on their own". Fortunately that was quickly settled and never came up again. All the while Nehru was banging Mountbatten's wife, which seems ironic given the fucking India had taken over the centuries. Then, before he was launched into orbit by the Irish Space Agency, he tried to launch a coup to overthrow Harold Wilson. The script writes itself.
And almost universally despised by a certain generation of Canadian veteran. I've heard stories of Royal Canadian Legion members toasting each other when they heard he died. I also read a comment on some YT video on Dieppe from the son of a veteran who wrote that his father never said a word about his military experience, and they only time he ever had a reaction somewhat related to the war was when he started laughing when he heard Mountbatten was assassinated.
The governor lady said, "Don't worry, I'm sending more gliders"
It's so fucked up that you had the "Small world" bit at the start (meeting people who randomly know the same people as you) without Tom seeing as that is peak Irish people
If the glider kink is when it crashes, is that considered soaking?
Never thought to hear Tetsuo: The Iron Man mentioned in a history podcast or anywhere else to be honest. similarly insane movie to the story of Wingate😂
Regarding small c conservative: Conventional, circumspect, staid, sober, prim, tempered...Prudent (was trying to rember the virtue that isn't in the Tarot) This dude was helluva ADHD rep
Lol I've been accused of aggressive chindittery before - it is somewhat of an art
There’s something about the Burma campaign that fascinates me, so once been waiting eagerly for this episode. Being from the Indian subcontinent, I’ve talked to people whose fathers served there and they recounted family stories of wounded Indian soldiers bayoneted in their beds and other horrors. I hope the campaign gets more attention in the west—it deserves it.
Fergal Keane's Road of Bones is a good read of the later war in Burma, and covers the utter savagery of the fighting. Highly recommend.
