Are you enjoying the bonus series format?

Over the last year or so we've changed from doing a bunch of random bonus episodes to a series format (Sharpe's Show, The Romecast, History of Armenia, LIons Led by Robots)

Do you like this change? Tell us how you feel!

I like it but I still would love some random stand alone episodes of you have a topic that would be fun but not fit for the main feed for whatever reason

P
Philip Kahn-Pauli · December 17, 2023

I really like thr History of Armenia series because it covers a corner of the world I know nothing about. And I really like the G Gundam side show. As an early 2000s Cartoon network fan...so much nostalgia.

piow · December 3, 2023

Unlikely to listen to a "we watched a show" format pod from any podcast

Bill B · December 3, 2023

Everything has been great except for the robot stuff. I love the war movie stuff.

b
bob the bob · December 2, 2023

I haven't seen gundam or sharpes show so if you start a series about them i miss the whole series, while if i dont watch a movie you cover i only miss out on one episode

c
chaotics 6 · December 2, 2023

I think it would be nice to have like a bonus series that would be just about random things, about history or even not about history as well just to change things up a bit. c;

S
Samuel Martin · December 2, 2023

Second time commenting on this . But also I assume things like golam are you having fun. And well if you are enjoying yourself doing it and we happen to get to hear your take all good.. I know it will never happen but of anyway some past co hosts could make an appearance that would be awesome. We all know Liam is died tragically as a true Philly fan falling from a lamp post

A
Anarcho Slowpoke · December 1, 2023

As many have already stated, the history of Armenia series is wonderful, the media stuff I take like a „friends coming together and hopefully having fun and reminiscing“ Podcast but I would prefer more of random bits from history. Doesn’t mean you should do stuff you don’t enjoy to talk about or research. Great show overall!

B
Brother_Tice · December 1, 2023

History of Armenia has been dope. But I haven't enjoyed the series based on shoes or movies as much. But if those series are fun for you guys keep it up. Getting episodes early is worth my money. Proud to support the Legion of the Old Crow.

s
scara b · December 1, 2023

it just doesn't seem like you guys have been ejoying doing the Sharpe movies but then I think you're half way through them by now so that might just be it.

J
Jsuman · November 30, 2023

The shows are hit or miss, personal preference for each one. The History of Armenia series is one of the main reasons I'm staying a patreon. Look forward to it as much as the main show episodes.

E
Evelyn · November 30, 2023

I think you've been doing a really good job overall. First and foremost you should do whatever bonus episodes help re-invigorate you or you find the most creatively satisfying. The main-line episodes alone are worth the subscription. For my personal preference, I don't listen to the media-review episodes, and I'm not interested in the Gundam series. I'm ambivalent on series vs. one-offs; both work well in my opinion. I'm really glad you did the History of Armenia, because it's desperately important to share the histories of marginalized and oppressed peoples. But I personally couldn't get into it because of the format. One of the things that makes LLBD work so well, I think, is the energy and levity that having a co-host brings to the production. The first episode of History of Armenia was really well-made, but I avoided continuing because I was worried it would just make me sad and numb, especially given Armenia's recent history. Which is a shame, because it deserves to be heard and (from what little I saw) have done an excellent job on it. I wouldn't underestimate how important things like "go chop down the poop tree" are to making heavy subjects palatable. And I feel like having a co-host makes those moments a lot easier to find and laugh about. Not to mention the energy presenting with another person seems to give you. Oh, and the "we read terrible erotica" episodes are artistry in its purest form. If you wish to continue, might I recommend the absolutely transcendent "I Don't Care If My Best Friend's Mom is a Sasquatch, She's Hot and I'm Taking a Shower With Her (...Because It's the New Millennium Book 1)."

D
Donovan Meade · November 30, 2023

I don't care for the episodes about shows and movies, but I enjoy all the other bonus content.

S
Spam Frogwich · November 30, 2023

I’ve been enjoying the history of Armenia since I’m American so public school history curriculum. The other series I mostly listen to for the riffs and interplay between the hosts. I barely watch any TV or movies on my own anymore, so this kind of stuff (and some of the more serious critique/review podcasts that are out there) are about all that are keeping me aware of what has ever happened in pop culture.

C
Curtis McWilliams · November 30, 2023

Generally enjoy it all, in particular the Armenia series is great, the standalone film ones are really good and any really weird or daft stuff like Gaddafi's coffee shop is good comic relief from the heavier topics.

s
schmoet · November 30, 2023

I'm mostly with Justin G. on this. Love History of Armenia and the random history episodes but I really don't care about the episodes about shows I don't watch. I just dont see the point of me listening to commentary on stuff I dont know and probably never will. But in the end, you should do what makes you happy.

W
William Nephew · November 30, 2023

I love the Gundam series and Sharpe series but could do with more reading in the veins of that good ‘ol dino-smut.

I
It's Kay! · November 30, 2023

I like the mix of both - the series ones (minus History Of Armenia which admittedly I skip, gave a few eps a try and just didn't really catch on with me) are mostly goofing around and sometimes staying on topic (which completely works, don't change), and then sometimes you've got the one-offs on the sillier things in history (or reading dino porn).

T
Trojan Zebra · November 30, 2023

The Gundam series is amazing, and Tom is a fantastic cohost -Kyle

s
scara b · November 30, 2023

tbh sharpe hasn't been that great of a content mine but GUNDAMS! lmao the whole time

Z
Z z · December 1, 2023

Sharp has been nice for napoleon jokes that give me more background on Joe - as he was when he was just a nerd starting out studying wagon manifests.

T
Thomas Layton · November 30, 2023

I will add that the history of Armenia series does look very intimidating to new arrivals but is definitely worth it once you get into it.

H
Harmony Maverick · November 30, 2023

I don’t mind the bonus episodes being a series, however I have really no interest in the tv show/movie episodes. Love the rest of it though

M
Mark Poirier · November 29, 2023

Its all very entertaining. The bonus episodes are often probably more interesting to listen to than watching the actual movies or series. The show overall is awesome, it really makes you rethink your ideas on history and develop a greater perspective on the reality of our world. Keep up the good work.

L
Loops · November 29, 2023

I liked the standalone history research episodes and movie and TV episodes. The series are a little long if you don’t know or aren’t into the show.

B
Brickonaut · November 29, 2023

Its more LlbD, robots, dino erotica or more Sharpe, its all appreciated by me

t
tbone · November 29, 2023

i like the series format and the random episodes about equally. could not care less about gundam

A
Anthony Diorio · November 29, 2023

A history of near misses would be awesome. Like times we came close to WWIII or nuclear attacks and the stories about how they didn't occur. Sort of like the Operation Paul Bunyan episode. I've only recently started listening so my bad if this has already happened

A
Actaeon113 · November 29, 2023

I definitely vote for more robots, particularly Gundam 08th MS team, aka Gundam: Vietnam. (And its a pretty short series. I think only 8 episodes)

t
theoneGalen · November 29, 2023

oh hell yeah

J
Justin G · November 29, 2023

The much appreciated gay tangents aside I have other podcasts to listen to if it's just going to be filler episodes. I doubt you guys are going to stop tho. The podcasting life seems to lead to a certain level of insanity and those are obviously an outlet for you to try and normalize and reinvigorate yourselves outside of the demands of such a research heavy format. I'm conscious of the amount of time out of your life this sort of endeavor takes and have had your regular episodes really help me through some very tough periods of my life. I noticed a slump in quality a while back but it seems to have gotten a bit better. I'm a huge geo-political/historical/economics nerd, and a US Army vet as well so my interests were already very parallel. I have plenty of podcasts that I play through but you're the only one I'm on patreon for. I don't see my contribution changing anytime soon. Mad respect for moving to Armenia. Mad respect for the Armenia episodes. Mad respect for the naked reality in your portrayals of military, colonial, and authoritarian history. I don't know another podcast that comes close and the format is leagues beyond the realness an academic environment can sanction so I'd say that your content adds an elevation to the podcasting artform which clearly I'm not alone in appreciating.

G
GOOBER · November 29, 2023

Its good its nice having a podcast that does a bit of everything

B
Ben · November 29, 2023

I like the series format but would like some occasional random episodes too

M
Mariusz 'Kot' Butrykowski · November 29, 2023

I know crazy stuff is easy and fun content, but I'd prefer a better series than gundam if it comes to giant robots.

C
Cisco Frost · November 29, 2023

Didn't think I would enjoy robots but here I am loving it.

S
Steph · November 29, 2023

I dont mind the reviews of series but I wish that the series that you review were more relevant/less obscure, or military adjacent ig. Also i wish that more of the bonuses consisted of main line style episodes. I like what you do anyway, keep up the good work

E
Eric Rivas · November 29, 2023

I like the bonus episodes. Sometime after a shitty day at work I need some dinosaur erotica to cleanse the palete.

E
En Bee · November 29, 2023

More flintlock guns, fewer pervy robots, please!

T
Thomas · November 29, 2023

No more sharpes pls…

C
Cody Foxworthy · November 29, 2023

Personally a fan of anything that makes y'all happy to do.

M
Mathieu Tremblay · November 29, 2023

(Also quite love the “NPR” style history of Armenia series)

M
Mathieu Tremblay · November 29, 2023

I think the bonus content is an awesome pure comedy break from the regular format.

o
obliteron · November 29, 2023

Yes! Keep on honking in the free world.

J
Joel · November 29, 2023

Love the g gundam series, would love more similar content

D
David Looney · November 29, 2023

I like the series I just wish history of Armenia was in its own feed. I like to binge it.

s
superblah123 · November 29, 2023

One off random topics are still my favorites, along with movie episodes. But I wouldn’t say I don’t like the way the shows are now. I really was hoping we’d get an episode by episode band of brothers or the pacific series

M
Mack Lamirand · November 29, 2023

I don't think there's been a bonus episode that I haven't liked since I started supporting you. I do tend to like the zoo crew eps more, but there hasn't been anything that left a bad taste in my mouth.

J
James Berlyoung · November 29, 2023

I like history of Armenia, dont care so much for show commentary. I will still listen to it, and as you said in the last one it breaks up the constant genocides.

S
Scott Kelly · November 29, 2023

I do miss the more well there’s your problem esc shows about the slow rolling problems of weapon’s development covering small topics to small to cover normally with a main series. Overall adored the robots and the time. Sharpe I felt was to specific and wasn’t my jam personally

G
Gant Diede · November 29, 2023

Please go to the Universal Century timeline after G Gundam. G Gundam is silly and weird, but UC is a pretty decent story about war and its consequences.

T
TheRedKnightify · November 29, 2023

I like it buts its heavily dependent on what's being covered. Loved the rome one And I'm loving the robots one but I wasn't the biggest fan of sharpe

J
Jon O · November 29, 2023

I'm not a big fan of movie/show discussions, but I will continue to support the show whether you continue to do them or not.

S
Something · November 29, 2023

I like the series but would occasionally like a one off fun topic bonus episode

S
Svennie · November 29, 2023

I quite enjoy the bonus series. I just don't want you all burning yourselves out though

M
Matthew Thiffault · November 29, 2023

Occasional one-offs would still be fun if you guys find funny things to talk about that don't merit a series. But I've been loving just about everything you put out so keep up the good work :)

D
Dukat · November 29, 2023

Lions Lead By Robots is making me want to watch G Gundam, Gundam Wing and other old school Gundam shows again. More Robots pls

B
Bry F · November 29, 2023

I think a heads up on these series could be cool so that folks have time to consume the media ahead of time

J
Jake Moore · November 29, 2023

Fuck what we want! Just keep doin Joe and we'll keep gargling it. The content you most enjoy making is the best content. Love

M
Michelle · November 29, 2023

Whatever you guys think is fun and engaging! Happy to have a mix of series and one-offs, the best moments always result from everyone having fun with the material and riffing off each other.

M
Michelle · November 29, 2023

I will say that it’s probably best to rotate between series/genres so there’s something for everyone. I love that you guys have fun with the G Gundam series but I’m not a huge gundam person so those episodes are typically a skip/lower priority listen for me. Maybe you could cycle through series or put future series up to a vote. Would love to see a book club à la Trashfuture’s Left On Read but I understand if that’s too much work.

T
TheLoveWizard · November 29, 2023

I will never complain about more LLBD in my life, and after realistening to the Khmer rogue series yesterday to torture myself some G-Gundam was what I needed to feel something again.

I
Ian DeSoucey · November 29, 2023

Happy with the content, but I definitely enjoy the media review style ones less. Would be more interested if more series were categorized together so I can easily get a bunch of episodes together. Battle of Stalingrad shouldn't be the only one in a playlist

L
LensWipe · November 29, 2023

I like a little bit of both, but these bonus episodes feel to me more like little gifts to yourselves where you can talk about the stuff you like amid a continuous production schedule. So I guess, in short, do whatever you want. I'm here either way.

B
Bobbie Fiasco · November 29, 2023

I voted "like it" but I'm also with the guy who said we still need occasional one-offs

S
Sam Butler · November 29, 2023

I love the random episodes but I also like to hear what you enjoy doing rather than anything we would tell you to do ahah

B
Blue · November 29, 2023

I am enjoying the robots but overall I'm not a huge fan of the series format bc it means that when you do a series on something I don't care about it locks me out of a huge chunk of bonus content. The current rate of one stand alone bonus episode per month is acceptable, if it dropped below that I would cancel my subscription (since I've listened to all the back episodes now, which is the other reason I subscribed). But it honestly feels like I'm not getting much out of the bonus eps when half of them are reviews of media I don't care about.

S
Steven Band · November 29, 2023

Whatever you need to do to keep the show going. Take care of yourself Joe. We love you and Tom

P
Puttoto · November 29, 2023

M

A
Anthony Girardi · November 29, 2023

I like it, but I still love the occasional one off.

C
Cuilinn Ó Danachair · November 29, 2023

History of Armenia is fantastic and I genuinely appreciate the effort you’ve taken. Sharpes show is great because how much y’all aren’t enjoying it is palpable, and loving Gundam. You’re doing great.

T
Tyler · November 29, 2023

Robots are the shit

S
Shamus Hewitt · November 29, 2023

I've been enjoying all the series you guys have put forward (Actually never watched much anime until LLBR but loving G Gundam). I do hope, though, that there'll still be a random bonus episode every now and then. Love seeing a good Chichijima Incident or William D. Porter pop up!

M
Mutual Aid Miniatures · November 29, 2023

I absolutely love it and would like to suggest Burn Notice as a great subject for future bonus episodes. It's a great show that took intelligence & defense department money to make 7 seasons of a show which ends with the message of "lol the intelligence community is staffed almost entirely by amoral monsters.

M
Michelle · November 29, 2023

They’re wrong: the IC is also staffed by catgirls and assorted furries that make up the backbone of the SIGINT and cybersecurity apparatus

M
Milien McDermott · November 29, 2023

I'm not as much of a movie person, but if you were looking for suggestions of other series-ish things to do commentary on, I really enjoyed the episodes on Far Cry and FPS-in-space with Travis. A multi part series on a game franchise would be cool

B
B Elliott Edwards · November 29, 2023

I don't give a single shit about Gundam g or whatever the fuck sharp's show is.

F
Fredrik Ahlberg · November 29, 2023

As a conscript (here on patroen) the latest bonuses have only been Sharpe and now It's LLBR, it would've been nice with some random movies in between thoose two series

F

Although it might be time for me to upgrade to a higher tier soon

S
Samuel Martin · November 29, 2023

I enjoy that you are having fun. Personally like that what I am patroning for releases more standard episodes to those that maybe can't afford them. But really you do you.

S
Samuel Martin · November 29, 2023

*I signed up for the patron because of the joy the main episodes gave me. Not even for the bonuses episode per say

B
Bobby · November 29, 2023

I like History of Armenia bc it’s history and LLBR bc it’s a break from all the history, Sharpe and the other tv/movie commentaries don’t do it for me

E
Evan Pardi · November 29, 2023

Honestly I can't think of a single bonus episode that has been anything less than great

E
ExiledPotter · November 29, 2023

Be great to have more episodes like the ones on the littoral ship.

S
Something Witty · November 29, 2023

As someone who was a contractor in R&D (ask me about the conveyor belt designed to get RHIB's back on the LCS trimeran!) and other things, maybe an easier way to do bonus content that is a one-off would be to have "contractors corner" and we can share some of our absurd stories that relate to episodes. There are plenty of entirely unclassified, not proprietary silly stories that we have. Also, might be fun to explain how we ended up with such a complex and nightmare web of tangled IP that requires only The Guy to fix it - the answer includes Bob Dole & Gatorade.

K
K. D. Campbell · November 29, 2023

Rome and History of Armenia are excellent. The Sharpe one - not so much, but still worth a listen

f
finland president man · November 29, 2023

I like especially bonus episodes being shorter vignettes about cool ass people (the swimmer guy who saved the bus full of people). It makes sense that bonus content is, in general, shorter/requires less upfront research Personally don't listen to any of the TV / movie ones since I'm not into that sort of thing but doesn't mean it's bad, others probably enjoy more. But yeah I don't necessarily think series is necessary, I would say my favorite bonus eps are the tasty bite size stories that don't need a full episode but are epic to hear about regardless. Not everyone is larger than life but they still have their important place in history as a small but rich tale of some great selfless act or some incredibly display of public stupidity and llbd is the best at praising the former and laughing about the latter. Thanks lads

f
finland president man · November 30, 2023

History of Armenia 14 Sharvash Karapetyan. It's an incredible episode and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did

p
priordice · November 29, 2023

Give it to me intravenous. Sometimes i wanna snuggle with some easy going topic when cleaning up or driving the bus. I really like the non-scripted parts, it noice. And not always be that corner meme guy that thinks "they don't know what brutal genocides happened on this world"

S
