Why did the Tahitian ladies like nails so much?
I'm pretty sure my friends and I did start getting scurvy in college. We bought a bunch of oranges after all our gums started bleeding.
"Take that James Cook, you dead bitch." Made me absolutely cackle.
I'm a teacher at an 1800s Australian sailing ship. We get kids coming on all the time to experience a bit of the age of sail cuz they're learning about Cook and the 'discovery' of australia. They seem to still be getting the cool and brave guy version of him that I got at school 35 years ago.
Gonna mention the beating dudes until they ate saukraut thing when we're talking about food though.
As a so-called Australian, I am frothing at the mouth for this. The day Cook got cooked is a national holiday amongst those who celebrate
Same here! Seeing that insult called cooks cottage in Treasury Gardens makes me want to reach for a bulldozer
34:58 crabs mentioned
Me being an annoying nerd about the Royal Navy when Joe mentioned the Cook was retired, "Hmm there must have been an election and Cook's patron was out of power."
I'm curious about Ledyard. Was he a vaguely decent guy stuck with a bunch of assholes, or just an honest asshole? I'm gonna look at some of these sources and see what kind of impression I get.
I never really got the point of Valentines point, seems so random and corporate to me. But from now I will happily celebrate Valentines Day by relisting to this episode every year.
I feel I've missed out on some podcast lore. Does Dutch Joe mean that the Yerevan arc is over?
Hey I would reccommend against using the term aborigines, it's considered pretty offensive.
Tom you missed out on the opportunity to play this absolute banger https://open.spotify.com/track/0osa46scUUmXOWlQgrWE71?si=zCquQvfGSROCBZK9ah-ZQA
Soylent doesn’t really taste of anything. It’s not bad it’s just bland.
For future reference the term "aborigines" is not used anymore unless youre a rinky dink aussie cunt and wanna be rude or get your teeth knocked out xo
Sub-Chief Keef
In Australia we have whitewashed version of him landing on what have become Sydney which 240 years later some guy shit his pants in a Maccas. Also there is a town called Cook town and a University name after him
If anyone is interested, here is an essay going into detail about the history of learning and unlearning how to treat scurvy. https://idlewords.com/2010/03/scott_and_scurvy.htm. Also, potatoes are a good source of vitamin C, less so when fried but I think there's still enough in there to keep college students from getting scurvy.
Pointing out the opportunity to make a dirty joke without actually making it is just the lazy man's dirty joke.
Being in Newfoundland and Labrador, where he mapped out the island so well that his maps were used till the 20th century, I'm very familiar with Cook. In saying that, I've been looking forward to this episode!
Also, Tom, it's pronounced "New-fun-LAND".
lived in captain cook’s hometown of Middlesbrough for 6 years. bunch of statues, a shopping area called captain cook square, there’s chip shops referencing him, so many streets and shit named after him. Learnt about this in my 2nd year of uni there and it made it so fuckin weird for the rest of it lmao

Thankful that though I had already known this story, I had the chance to discover it from an academic source on par with LLBD. https://youtu.be/agsiFcRGAQo?si=LhU-3lJcnbbfR00E
