EARLY EPISODE: The Fenian Raids
Once upon a time Irish-Americans thought it would be a good idea to invade Canada from the US. It did not go well.
CORRECTION: Andrew Johnson*
EDIT: I meant David Fincher

Damn, this is the first time that you've talked about a battle that happened within comfortable driving distance of me. Just feels a little funny hearing such familiar names.
The Irish American side of my family literally came to Nebraska around the early 1900s. This episode was spiritually cleansing for me. Oh and in case anyone is concerned yes they kept up the anti white racism. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1909_Omaha_anti-Greek_riot#:~:text=The%20Greek%20Town%20riot%20was,there%2C%20and%20started%20a%20riot.
I can say with a great deal of confidence that my Irish immigrant side of the family did not move to Nebraska or work with the Fenians. They simply made the more confusing choice of moving to Southwest Missouri.
I assume you meant they met with Andrew Johnson, not Jackson, as Jackson died several decades earlier
This confused the fuck out of me for a minute. All of their points about Andrew Jackson were correct, but they were definitely talking about Andrew Johnson.
having not listened to the episode yet, reading the comments is leading me to believe that the Fenian Raids have a lot to do with being barefoot
Donk ass mf
Long time Hagenaar, backing up what others said. Not normal, but weird new age folks exist here for sure, so still not super surprising.
Here's something neat I learned recently that's relevant to this episode: Baseball became so popular in the US because 1.) anti-British sentiment led people to want to play a purely American game instead of the British cricket, and 2.) a large amount of Union soldiers were from New York (where baseball was invented), and those soldiers taught it to everybody else they served with.
There was a barefoot dude at my university. The only time I saw him with shoes on was a day when it hit -20 F. He wore tennis shoes.
Fenian Raids sounds like a War Metal band, and I'm here for it.
The North West Rebellion and Louis Riel would make for a great episode someday! Until then we wait for the patreon goal to get hit so Tom and I can settle whether French Canadian Catholics or Irish Catholics are capable of more war crimes. Lol
Any thoughts on the alternative reality where Utah was founded by Irish nationalists rather than the Mormons?
This podcast would be so much better with more cross talk and off topicbanter.
Being barefoot is not that common here, but yeah you see some old hippies, or nature loving types walking around barefoot
Okay, another Dutch citizen pitching in: being barefoot here isn't normal in any way!
Another fantastic episode!
Who let their dogs out?
If you guys liked Mindhunter you guys should check out Fincher's new movie The Killer on Netflix. Saw it in theater and it's basically a deconstruction of the standard "hitman gets personal" genre. Alice would definitely get Agent 47 vibes from this one
Also has a WeWork joke 5min in for the TF hogs
Shoes are foot rent. Otherwise, excellent episode.
The Irish 'invasion' of Vancouver has been a long running thing. There was the crop from the global financial crisis. I remember interviewing one for a geotechnical engineering job and we wound up talking about cattle acreage ratios in Cork and Central Alberta. A few month later we needed another so we hired the first ones roommate.
The picking up things with your feet is a Filipino thing along with the not wearing shoes inside.
I think the Asian guy was already blind (in one eye from Vietnam). Not to say Markie Market ain't trash though.
Joe, if you ever invade Canada, I'd happily welcome you in my Toronto home and serve you dinner on one condition: no mention of the Red Wings. That's a hard rule.
TABERNACLE - le réponse québécois
You should cover the Glyndwr rising
I have to agree with Tom on people who walk around barefoot. My other thought is do you want ring worm? Because that's how you get ring worm.
May be worth looking into Louis Reil, he's a pretty famous Metis freedom fighter
Haha my hometown in Massachusetts is named after Samuel Shute (Shutesbury)
David Lynch doing Mindhunter would be quite an experience...
Loved it! Y’all should do Los San Patricios in the US-Mexican war. They did it right!
Come to New Zealand - we embrace the bare foot life to a very strange degree...
I lived in the Hague for 5 years. Plenty of hippies there that's the foot guy. All the other Dutch people would have been judging him super hard but also think like, not my problem what a weirdo
I'm sure this will be good but when I got the alert and it wasn't G Gundam I was gutted.
Hell yeah was hoping y'all would make this one. I used to do Fenian raid reenactments in highschool (yes I had no friends)
My 2 or 3x great grandpa was in the Fenian brotherhood. Not sure if he was involved in these raids.
