Nate's interruptions and sidebars remind me of my nickname when I was in: I was CPT. CAVEAT. I believe that Nate deserves the title more, and I say that with all the love possible.

I know I'm a little late to this, but ine thing you should be careful about is how much blame for some of these fuck-ups are placed on Hitler and not on his generals. This is not to say Hitler didn't make mistakes, because he did and a lot of them, but his generals also made many mistakes. A good number of generals lived after the war and tried to distance themselves from Nazi Germany by placing all the problems, failures, and the acts of horror done on Hitler's shoulders and remove all responsibilities from their own. These generals and Hitler made many mistakes and willingly committed various crimes against humanity, including the Holocaust of bullets which murdered about a million people leading up to Stalingrad.

How hard was it for Joe to resist going into a tangent about that huge tank? It sounds so cool in a dumb nerdy way

N
Noblese Oblahaj · September 25, 2023

The KV-1 is a fascinating rank id love to hear Joe talk about. It was highly advanced for the year it went into production, but also had a transmission that was borrowed from farm equipment and had to be shifted with a mallet

I used to pray for times like this (5 hours of stalingrad)

Honestly there's probably enough material out there on Budyonny if you want to do an episode on him. His background as a dirt-poor peasant turned Bolshevik, as well as his actions during the Russo-Japanese war, the Russian Civil War and the polish-Soviet war are fascinating. I know his personal journals from that time were also preserved and they were partially translated into English in "White Eagle, Red Star" (A history book which I have fond memories of but have not read recently enough to remember how accurate it is). You can probably get your hands on the memoirs themselves though as far as I can tell the only English-language copies out there go for hundreds of dollars. The dude had a very blase attitude towards war and soldiering. Not in the sense he was indifferent to the horrors of war, but more so just that he had very downplayed but human reactions to things that happened around him that I think would fit the vibe of the podcast excellently.
