I was in the British Army, deployed north. We got called out to a recently opened school one day. Someone had taken a little girl out of class, put wrapped her in car tires, dumped half a can of kerosine over her, and lit it. She had managed to crawl part way out, or someone else had tried to rescue her immediately before or just after she'd been lit on fire. When we arrived everything below her lower torso was melted to the concrete hardstanding. Somehow at that point she was still alive. I mean she was breathing. Afghanistan just seems to be unfathomably cruel to children. I'm not smart enough to begin to understand why.

Jesus, I don't understand how you get so fucked that you can do that to a person, much less an innocent child.

Awful all around for those kids. Poor Sal for wanting to help and not being able to do much for that girl. This chapter haunted me after the first time I read it.
