One of the holdouts was led by Captain Sakae Ōba. He led 46 soldiers and about 150 civilians. They held out until December of 1945 (that's nuts lmao) and Ōba was noted for his priority of protecting the civilians that were with him over combat with the Americans. The Marines on Saipan eventually dubbed him "The Fox". There is even an ok Japanese movie about him (it could be bad its been a while since I've seen it) Overall I think "The Fox" is a bad nickname because you have to be more like a fucking Magician to hide 200 people on an island less than 50 miles big for 16 months.
