This brings me back to Medal of Honor: Rising Sun. The entire last half of the game is about searching for Yamashita's gold. A bunch of it goes down in an aircraft carrier in the last mission.
I'd love to hear more about the Japanese politics of the military during WWII. Also, while I'm not sure if this is something that is within the realm of this podcast, I'm pretty curious about how Japan turned around from the imperial stuff. I know some things about it from reading books like "The Long Defeat" by Akiko Hashimoto, but it feels like there was such a pervasive culture around the military and empire and it just... stopped being the major culture of the populace relatively quickly.
Everyone knows Yamashita’s gold was found in 1999 by Randall Waterhouse, Avi Halaby and Douglas MacArthur Shaftoe.
As a Singaporean, thank you for picking this topic. It always ends up as a small foot note in most WWII documentaries.
Desperate to know more about the story of Da Dieppe Defender who got mad at the pod
Every Filipino kid grows up hearing about Yamashita's gold and I always thought it would be cool to have a Goonies-style movie about a ragtag team of punk kids looking for it. It was cool seeing it referenced in Neal Stephenson's Cryptonomicon though.
hisap batang saya is suck my dick in Malay
Yamashita's Gold is the mcguffin of Neal Stephenson' novel Cryptonomicon for those with an interest in such things.
Great Episodes. The Fall of Singapore remains a significant event in Australia's self identity (particularly in regards to our relationship with the UK). Not quite Gallipoli, Kokoda or even the bombing of Darwin / submarines in Sydney but up there. My partners grandfather didn't come back from being deployed there. Huge impact on that family (compounded by a prior generation that was wrecked by gas in ww1)
Excellent episode. Also, shouts out to Cecil Callaghan, the guy who took over the 8th Division when Bennett bailed on them. Unlike Bennett, Callaghan felt it was his duty to maintain morale among his men while they were POWs and was later commended for his service in helping so many Australian soldiers survive the camps. When his camp was liberated in 1945, one of the first things he did was personally deliver sworn statements from himself and Percival to the Field Marshal of the entire Australian armed forces calling out Bennett's cowardice. (Bennett initially escaped public condemnation because there was nobody else from the Singapore campaign to contradict his bullshit lies when he returned to Australia). Callaghan was also an enlisted forward artillery observer who somehow managed to survive Gallipoli, the Somme, and the Hundred Day Offensive in WW1 just to make him even cooler. He should've been leading the 8th Division the whole time.
Prager U has an app now smh
lmao props to Tom for bringing up being banished to the lagoon, excellent callback 10/10
"...me and Milo's ex girlfriend carrying...." love the poly representation, sorry she dumped you guys.
I loved this quote i found on Wikipedia on Percival. "...by 1945 this description had been turned on its head with even Percival's defenders describing him as "something of a damp squib". Pinical Britishness right there.
You guys are awesome! I love this show
“Disregard your homeowners association, dig a trench in your front yard!” is some solid advice.
