The flood Nate referred to is probably the 1942 Huayuankou flood when the Nationalist blew a bunch of dams that caused an apocalyptic flood and famine across the northern China plain.
Nate claims he was never in a cult, but that's a damn lie. He was airborne infantry for years
"I really fucking hate it when I get betrayed by my directional kings", is a phrase I will be using in my everyday life. Thanks Nate!
Good and fun episode, although the South American wars of independence are actually real and super interesting - Simon Bolivar et al, Mike Duncan on Revolutions had a good series on this.
Late to the party, but I took a class with Jonathan Spence once. He seemed like a cool guy, but that was the semester where I decided to take 4 history classes, so honestly it's all a bit of a blur.
A lot of Meat Loaf's stuff was actually inspired by Wagner, if I remember, so good call. And as a power metal dork, sure enough, a lot of that genre (which has a big scene in Germany) can trace itself back to him. also god DAMN bat out of hell is a banger and a half
i didn’t have a Invader Zim spot on my Lions Led By Donkeys Bingo card.
Meatloaf was born Marvin Lee Aday, but legally changed the first name to Michael because of a Levi's commercial that had the line, "Poor fat Marvin can't wear Levi's"
“HIS NAME WAS ROBERT PAULSEN!” Also he ded.
Joe I would love next episode if you explain what the fuck these secret socities are. Do they just do spook shit recreationally?
As I understand it they were usually a mix of organized crime and filling in as infrastructure when the government couldn’t.
Okay you need to watch the 1987 film Walker starring Ed Harris. It's so bad it's good
You guys are gonna feel real dumb when you meet Jesus and his brother in heaven lol
Bat out of Hell absolutely slaps. If anyone hasn't listened to it please do.
Air Force guy here. Wing King is a Wing Commander (typically an O-6). I never thought of it as a fast-food wing joint... now that will be stuck in my head.
Pair that up with the barcode style ranks of the RAF and you have a good wings joint
Knights of the Golden Circle.
Meatloaf died last year. Ironically (or maybe not really), as an anti masker and downplayed of the seriousness of Covid-19, it was likely due to Covid-19 complications, as he was sick with it just weeks before his rapid decline in health and ultimately his death. The actual cause of death was never officially released. Still, Bat Out Of Hell fucking slaps
