At the time of his death, National Lampoon published the following joke: Q: What's white and goes across the at 120 MPH? A: Lord Mountbatten's tennis shoe.

The spin we got on this in Canadian high school was that this was a failed raid and we're not really sure why it happened, anyways on to the slightly more heroic thing where we symbolically sacrificed like 1500 guys to go die fighting the Japanese at the defence of either Shanghai or Hong Kong I don't recall which.

Haha and the moral of this story is that in general, lessons are not learned. But if they are learned then often they're learned by Nazis with the tender guiding mentorship of people sacrificing pedophiles

Listening to this on the 80th anniversary of Dieppe and still believe that if anyone other than Hitler was the enemy, the UK would have gotten curb-stomped.

Holy shit I did not expect the HMS Habbakuk to come up. My Tank Is Fight! was, if nothing else, a very formative book for me. I feel the absurdly huge tanks the Nazis wanted to build -- the Maus, and the two variants on the Ratte -- definitely deserve an episode.

I didn’t really care for John Cena until I saw a movie ‘Blockers’ a couple years ago. He was great in that one.

My high school history teacher was a CAF veteran who’d deployed to Bosnia, so one would think he would have been super about the Aggressive Canadian Cope that casts the Dieppe raid as necessary, which is basically how our textbooks framed it. Instead, he told us all that Mountbatten had recklessly thrown in the lives of colonial soldiers into a terribly-planned operation because he felt that the lives of colonial soldiers were essentially only good for being thrown in as cannon-fodder. My teacher then outlined how Mountbatten had failed at every command he was given — although the fact that he was a prolific pedophile didn’t come up. I feel like that’s the other side of Canadian Cope in regards to this event — either it was a necessary battle to learn lessons for D-Day, or it was a colossal failure that could all be laid at the feet of Mountbatten. Interestingly enough, Mountbatten absolutely become persona non grata in Canada after the war. May he rest in piss.

Joe, a ten part series on Stalingrad better be a thing now that you've mentioned it. Lol.

This isn't a funny history show. This is a belligerent history show.

Eagle hanging dong is either a band name or a gas station action dvd title.

Or a song by a furry musician

You should do a “Dunkirk as a German failure/French suicide episode”. That’d be amazing

M

You keep referencing ballsack weed. There's a story there somewhere

For your information, .ca is not a government website, just means that the company/people running the website have a presence in Canada. Thanks for the great show!

So, Joe, is Stalingrad going to be your Tacoma Narrows Bridge?

J

This is like the military equivalent of the "send more paramedics" scene in Return of the Living Dead

I know a man who knew Montgomery well. If you want me to ask him anything about the wee weirdo just let me know. He's a military historian.

Does this mean we will get a Operation Husky episode?
