I'm no scientist so take this with a grain of salt. I think when you look at people like John Rabe it's useful to keep in mind hatred usually is learned and comes from ingroup outgroup dynamics. A person might look at a group of people they hate being brutalised and enjoy it or feel nothing about it or justify it, but when they are transplanted into a completely alien environment and faced with the same kind of violence that conditioning isn't really there as much because there's less familiarity. When there's no cultural context you're rooted in and you have no real stake in it violence just looks like violence. I think this idea would also have some applicability when you look at people like hongchrist where he hated the Confucians and the Buddhists and the Christians, but was fine with the Muslims. He had familiarity and resentment towards the other groups but not towards the Muslims who were relative unknowns.
