What's your favorite and/or most horrifying animal sex fact?
Do you have any tips for how to write about traumatic experiences?
Thank you for responding. Browning's description of Goldhagen's cultural characteristics of Germans raised my red flags. I studied business history in grad school and generally rebel against cultural explanations of historical developments, but Goldhagen sounded particularly ahistorical in his condemnation. I also found Browning's use and explanation of sources a refreshing example in how to do solid academic history and it made me slow to criticize him. But I'm always skeptical of historians shitting on critics because the warring egos is something I remember well. I'll give Goldhagen a look at some point just to see what he argues and ensure I'm not straw manning him.
I just finished Ordinary Men on your recommendation and found it very convincing. I'll likely read Goldhagen's book at some point, but am curious what you think of it and the debate surrounding their competing works.
Personally, I truly hate Goldhagen's work. It isn't history. It was fueled by spite and he worked backwards to find things that matched his thesis. Not to mention claiming germans were "inherently" more antisemitic is without basis and dabbles in race science
Since you served as a tanker and seems to be quite enthusiastic about them plus we're getting the Battle of Kursk atm, have you watched the anime (Allah forgive me for uttering this) Girls und Panzer?
Were the podcast to get its own technical, how would you decorate it, in terms of colour scheme/camouflage and insignia, etc.? Would there be enough room to airbrush a Space Wizard on the side?
What’s your favorite improvised weapon? As in: the toothbrush crossbow.
You have a time machine and you can go to anyplace on earth for the last 2500 years, but the time machine fully transes your gender. Where do you go.
How did Nick and Joe meet?
Military Headgear Word Association Quiz - A well formed beret (*) is to a field cap as a diamond is to a turd. Discuss. (* a “well formed beret” does not mean a puffed up pita bread sized dollop of felt but a proper beret, lining removed, boiled briefly and then dried on your head, so that it fits tight and right)
Since you and Nick spent a lot of time in Texas, what is most hated/favorite part of the state?

If you were almighty for an hour - whom would you smite?

Did we ever figure out what kind of church Nick belonged to? Married catholic priests? Was he in a cult?

What is, or was, the worst MRE? What is the best?
Did you finally take Nick to the zoo like you said in the earlier days?
I would 100% be fine with it lol. I'd be flattered

How did I not see Old Crow at Bevmo yesterday?
Is Nick dead? If not, is he going to? Is Liam Nick's dad, come to replace him?
Also where's Rich?
I like all the episodes on Africa. If you do one on Equatorial Guinea, I'll chip in some money to get a license to use "Those Where the Days."
I was in the navy with a guy who’s last name was Enus. This is obviously not a question but I just smoked a blunt and remembered that. Poor kid.
Are there any role-models for you when it comes to writing Joe? Or any stories in particular that made you want to become a writer?
Are y'all ever gonna do an episode on the RCMP or any other Canadian things?
What’s your favorite cute animal fact?
It is made with pure crows
Why is old crow so delicious yet so affordable?
The Yalta Conference... fuck, marry, kill?
Have you gotten any flak for using a name similar to the Association of Old Crows, the fraternal organization for retired intelligence officers?

Yay Liam?
Will nick ever come back? :(
I have eaten him to gain his strength
Never hear any of you guys talk about cannabis, are you guys not fans or is this just because it's not federally legal? I would assume Joe and Nick would have gotten lit in Washington. It'd be cool if you guys could talk about drug use in the army like I know that it's not allowed but obviously soldiers find ways around things so it'd be interesting to see how they relax and side hussle. If your hesitant for legal reasons completely understandable.
What is your tanksona
Since spirit animals are problematic and given how leftist the community is I have to ask. What animal is your fursona and why?
Hey guys! Fat Leonard would make a great episode, particularly focusing on the insane lack of repercussions all around. The guy lives a few miles away from me at his doctors house, and no one I know has ever heard of him. -A moist boi
To anyone happening o read this; What would be the best military vehicle to convert to a camper / houseboat / flying house in your expert opinions? Pros might be stuff that makes daily life easier, or more interesting.
Hilux technical.
-what are some of your favourite egregious structural or systemic weirdness in games? Eg who do play as in Civilisation? In Starcraft? -What are some of the more accurate simulations of command that sound like shitposts? -I'd be interest in episodes on rations and nutritional diseases, and cryptography and cryptanalysis. -Would watch 'the imitation game'? It downright slanders alan turing.
Hi - Have you guys considered doing the First Anglo-Afghan War? It has all the classics, imperial power trying to interfere in Afghan factional politics and fucking up, British incompetence, including a doddering old general having his entire army get totally wiped out in a horrifying retreat through the snow because he's too crippled with gout. 'Return of a King' by William Dalrymple is a really good history of it using a lot of Afghan source and placing in context of the recent Afghan war. Thanks for the great show guys!
Psst we already did
What do you think is the best way to deal with misinformation in a movement you agree with without looking like a plant or a contrarian?
What is the best meal you've ever eaten?
I live in a small fishing community on the Chesapeake bay. There's a guy I know who is on bottled oxygen and rides around on his electric wheelchair all day chain smoking cigs. He's blown himself up like 3 times. If he blows up again and kills himself or others would you consider it an SVBIED?
And is bottled oxygen on a wheelchair a technical?
Hello Fellers. Joe has given a bunch of us the MontePill by bringing attention to the struggles and history of Armenians. Are there any "causes" that you are paying attention to as a result being on or researching for this podcast?
WW1 is a land of absoloute Donkeys but there were some diamonds in the shit stew. In your opinion, who was the most competent general for both the entente and central powers (They dont have to be good human beigns, just good compared to WW1 generals) some of my personal choices would be Arthur Currie, John Monash and Alexei Brusilov.
Would absolutely love something on Lettow-Vorbeck.
I know Joe likes Napoleon, but didn't he behave very poorly to both Toussaint l'Ouverture and General Dumas?
Joe has made it pretty clear that Napoleon is his hypocritical hero, you can admire someones military talent without praising them as a human being.
Is the notion that the Treaty of Versailles was overly punitive to Germany highly exaggerated or worse, pure bullshit peddled by the same German right-wingers/militarists who promoted the “we would’ve won if we hadn’t been stabbed in the back by Social Democrats/Jews” (those right-wingers including the literal military dictator of WWI Germany Erich Ludendorff)? It always seemed like a sus explanation to me, like it was deflecting blame away from German culpability in WWI and trying to basically explain away why the Nazis came to power, ie “poor picked-on Germany.” But maybe I’m wrong, idk. Would love to read your thoughts. Thanks!
I’m new to Military History. Is there a good primer to learn the language of warfare? For instance, what does mixed arms combat mean?
If you could send a crate of AK-47's and ammo to any point and time in the past, where?
What are opinions of average GI on troops of other nationalities in Afghan mess. Did Polish involvment brought any recog among US troops?
Can you guys do your magic on the Tiwintza war? Thanks!
We know how much it sucked being in the military, but is there anything you liked, miss, or enjoyed?
How based is Posadism on a scale 1-10
Is it possible for countries to maintain an army but solely for defense? I guess like Finland in WWII era or so. How does a 'small' country that just wants to mind its own business prevent itself from being absorbed like an amoeba by a larger country that IS focusing much of its efforts on colonization and aggressive expansion?
You have mentioned several times that you think that things like airborne troops, and tanks are obsolete. Can you help explain why to us non-military people, and maybe give some other examples of archaic military waste.
Any possibility of live show post covid?
What is your take on opinions like “all soldiers are bad because being poor isn’t an excuse to commit war crimes”
This would require all soldiers to commit war crimes for this to be true and when you're speaking to people who believe things like this they don't want a discussion, they just want to hate soldiers.
What is the most blatant scam that you heard about that Army got pulled into?
Do you have any opinions about the audio version of Hooligans?
If podcasting were a franchise in the mould of WWE “wrestling” and podcast hosts had entrance music etc, what would your entrance music be

Can you name a single successful counterinsurgency campaign that was not a genocide?
The American Civil War
When are we getting a Vietnam War series?
If you could only do one more episode/series for LLBD, what would be the topic?
A question to joe: How do you feel about the Armenian diaspora in the US / do you have any connection to them? As a someone from the Rwandan diaspora I'm really curious how it is for other communities/diasporas
You guys do a great job of reviewing the most horrendous, soul sapping, and bumble fucked campaigns in military history. Why not delve into the Siege of Kut, 1915-1916, starring the ultimate donkey, the very pompous General Charles Townshend. Best of all, it occurred in that land of magic and mayhem, Mesopotamia, or what we now call Iraq. If you love military misery, idiocy, and arrogance, good gawd, you will be right at home in this sad, sad tale. I can't think of a better crew to explore this saga of Imperial comeuppance.
Opinion on the great state of Indiana?
It's been 3 gong on 4 years that you have been doing this. While a lot of your stories are just canon at this point, I think an episode or longer question from the legion segment on your story. Make it a patreon episode. Also, would love/happy to crowd source a series on French Algeria and/or the Foreign Legion. Especially given your family connection
Will there ever be a "We'll there's your trash donkey zoo crew" super episode
I hear it will be about how the the Tacoma Narrows Bridge Disaster was caused by facist TERFs.
What is your most notable jerk sesh while in the service?
What piece of sci fi military equipment would you least like to be assigned to operate?
I'm told that Warhammer 40k is very popular among service members. In your experience, how accurate is this?
If you had a time machine that let you observe any historical event, but not interact or change it, where would you go? (Basically it would let you see how something actually went down)
Which of your tattoos has the dumbest story behind it?
Are we going to get two versions of your third book? Like one from you and then one from the editor who helped redo the first one?
What is your favorite Nicholas Cage movie and why is it National Treasure?
If you were going to engage in psychological warfare by blaring the same song repeatedly until the other side surrendered, which song would you pick?
A movie suggestion: Captain Conan by Bertrand Tavernier. Don't think it's streaming. But it's an odd bird in that it's a WWI film, centers on the relationship between a French captain of commandos and a schoolteacher lieutenant who is assigned to him, and ends just after WWI with a Russian attach on a French prison camp (from my limited knowledge of post-WWI European history- WTF?). I liked it a lot and would be curious about your reactions.
What's your favourite 40k faction?
When Nick returns from deployment, what form of duel-to-the-death will he and Liam conduct in order to finally decide the LLDB second-in-command spot?
If you had to pin a specific ideology on yourself, what would it be?
Have you guys ever thought about doing an episode on how militaries have treated individuals with PTSD or other readjustment issues?
Can you name a liberal politician or figure you like?
What job did you dream about doing as a child?
Which is more realistic about war, star wars or star trek?
I'm sincerely curious. Why do you like Albania so much?
In one of the episodes there is a discussion about the pod having a surprising amount of Albanian listeners. This is also brought up in the episode about Hoxha and his bunkers.
What's your favorite piece of equipment that "found its way home with you" after you got our of the army? Alternate question fir Liam favorite thing you took from any job.
What, if anything, do you miss about your hometown? Im Living in Michigan and jealous of Hawaii lol
