EARLY EPISODE: The Battle of Graignes
Joe and Nate discuss the 1944 airborne insertion in Normandy, the absolute chaos on the ground, and a very strangely cobbled-together American unit that somehow wound up holding off a German division in a small town called Graignes.

[ Objective: Survive( optional ) ] 1944 Paratrooper: 馃槦
Is there an official thread for Questions from The Legion? Or is that on Discord? I literally didn't know what Discord was until recently
Theres a discord channel but i believe on patreon you can just DM the show account
lol, my wife is Stephen Ambrose's granddaughter
Speaking of the military rations of WW2, if you want a more in-depth look at what they were like including the K and D rations mentioned you should check out Tasting History by Max Miller on YouTube.
Does the Denim Samurai smell of Rock n Rye or Moon mist?
Girl, I gotta collect'em all. Let me see them Jigglypuffs
The StuG while technically not a tank was Germany's most successful fighting vehicle in WW2. Destroying more allied vehicles than the Panzer IV, The Panther, and even the Tigers. It was also reliable and cheap to produce. Germany is not known for making good tanks anymore but in WW2 they were ahead of their time considering all the limits they had to work under. Modern German tanks though are not so good when compared to other modern countries.
As a kid my Dad had a customer who was a paratrooper for operation Overlord. I remember him telling me the story of his drop. Pitch black and he jumped out, and broke his leg really bad when he landed and couldnt do anything but lay in the field where he landed. A bit later nazis where going through the field killing who was left alive. He pretended to play dead and it worked cause they walked past him, he then shot and killed both of them with his sidearm. And I think that has shaped my thoughts on war since than
My aunt is a French teacher. She told me it鈥檚 like me trying to understand Scots or someone from rural Kerry as an American.
I feel like eating a psyduck would get you fucked up.
A rare case of lions led by lions.
NEW BRUNSWICK MENTION!!!!!!馃馃コ馃崄 i do appreciate the sincinct explaination of Cajun and Acadian french, how it differs from European French, and their connections. I also enjoy Chiac mention that doesnt make fun of it too much or calls it Quebecois bc that is such a pet peeve of mine 馃槶 i am so used to it though so its always a little funny sharing it with my friend who speaks European French and Renuion Creole lol
Okay. Now I'm getting suspicious. Has anybody ever seen Tom and this "Denim Samurai" in the same room?
I'm just imagining Joe with Paratrooper qualification being some weird GLOWOT attempt to somehow parachute an Abrams that got bizarrely far in planning
Smh, this is Farfetch鈥檇 erasure. The Pokemon that was hunted to near extinction for its deliciousness. And it even brings its own vegetable side in the form of a Leek.
On the topic of North American French dialects, I learned Canadian French from k through 12 as a second language. I canot emphasize enough that when someone asked me if I could live in French town because of it, I hit them with the biggest smile and hold your shoulder meme of all time.
This is so reminiscent of Overlord(movie) which preceded D-Day, without the living-dead nazi mad science aspect.
That was outstanding. Listening to Nate go full Ranger School officer as Joe fed him an increasingly ludicrous situation was really good to listen to, and the BoB discussion was on point.
Live show was great, Joe didn't fuck up at all.
A guy forgetting his troops need food? Noooo.
nah that鈥檇 never happen except constantly
With about 20 minutes to go if listening time, this US scratch force is actually doing really good. I suspect I can see how this is going to end - they sucked away so many critical nazi resources that a much more important objective was liberated quicker abd easier than it would/should have been.
With zero to go, I feel the conclusion is that even if they had had the same woeful level of equipment a division of 21st June 1941 Nazis would have made more German and less Nazi choices. Getting your men mowed down and pasted at choke points against an enemy with limited ammo (MG, mortar shells) when you have weapons perfectly capable of suppressing them or taking them out entirely (105mm artillery) if you just exercise patience is hardly efficient/German, but it is very Warhammer 40k/Nazi
Fuck sake a mortar pit in a cemetery feels just like a start to a horror movie
actually a cemetery is one of the best possible places to put a mortar team, they usually have stone walls around them and some hills, as well as tree cover.
Versailles Topiary has leveled up Versailles Topiary is evolving Versailles Topiary evolved into Normandy Hedgerow Normandy Hedgerow has learned "Watered with the blood of vikings" Normandy Hedgerow has gained the trait Impassable Normandy Hedgerow has gained a level in Artilleryt Normandy Hedgerow has learned Sneak Attack
I'd like to imagine being a parachute qualified tanker means you didn't get turned to jelly when you get thrown out a C130 inside a tank
Ace Combat had a mission where the enemy was dropping BMPs by parachute, all their dialogue was just them begging to make it to the ground in one piece. I think your airborne tankers would be those guys lmao
Ah, Stephen Ambrose, Joe is correct. He doth suck. My brother's ex-wife was a historian for the National Park Service here in the US. She attended a professional conference about Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Discovery. The conference coincided with the bicentennial of Lewis and Clark doing their thing and Ambrose had recently published his book about L&C, so he was invited. Remember how I said this was a professional conference? People were wearing dressy attire for a bunch of historians, jackets, ties, dress, etc. Not old Stevie Boy, nope he rolled in cosplaying a member of the Corps of Discovery. Apparently there was much diression among the non-jackass attendees, meaning everyone but Ambrose.
Obviously raising a boy and 9/11 are VERY similar
one could say it took raising 19 saudi boys into the sky to make a 9-11
Aw man I'm bummed. I forgot to stream the live show last night and now I can't buy the stream. Was hoping it would be open through the weekend.
