, . .
I'm glad you guys are working together on both podcasts!
I feel like the byzantines massively overestimated how centralised/effective the western military structure was. You can't just tell them "send us some spetznas" when what they are is basically barbarian war bands with slightly better logistics and much better equipment/training.
The ethos of knightly "do what you want" combat is such a hit or miss thing. Yes your entire formation might collapse because Sir Dipshit decided he wanted to go get personal glory, but also because everyone is thinking as an autonomous unit you might have someone acting under completely selfish reasoning end up finding the solution to the problem in a way you probably wouldn't if you had a disciplined army. It's very chaotic very orky
Solid episode. The whole time I’m picturing this https://youtu.be/SFFgcTzCvMo?si=U7TdQNG0FsATGoRO for shooting on the knights
I didn't know that Sir Christopher of Benoit was a Highlander.
Godfrey and his homies rolling up like the fucking Master Chief and Spartans…
Thanks for having us!
OH SHIT QUINN'S ALIVE
JoCat Mention. We are now one step closer to OSP Blue being on the cast.
“Counting or not counting knight violence?” (Immediately catches arrow to the neck)
Quinn sounds so much like a non Irish Tom. Wild.
Ashley of Babbit storming the gate and getting smote by a crossbow bolt
Oooohhhh this made me wheeze with laughter
I make a tachanka with an AC20 pulled by a hundred horses. I fire it once. The recoil drives it back and instantly kills every horse behind it.
We do rightly like to laugh at people falling for the Light Horseman and/or Skirmisher trick over and over again, but it was refreshing to hear someone point out that there is actually a counter (have enough light cavalry) Also the point that if you're dumb enough to try to fight an enemy in a way which they're actually good at (seriously? brawling buff dudes wearing a quarter of their bodyweight in armour with a bunch of guys wearing boiled leather?) then you shouldn't be surprised when it's difficult is equally eternal I feel like a lot of the laughing at Italian military efficiency in general kind of skips past the bits where they absolutely woodchippered entire Allied formations. Yes, we ran circles around most of them in partisan and mobile warfare but where we met them on their own terms or they dictated them to us it was bloody hard
All the BattleTech references are killing me. LOL But Joe is right, BattleTech is based on the post-Roman wars of succession for who would get to claim to be the next Roman empire. In the real world I believe they "ended" with the breakup of the Holy Roman Empire, though looking at the fasces and neo-Classical architecture of Washington, DC - not to mention the push to make the USA into an officially Christian nation - suggests they never actually concluded. In BattleTech, the Succession Wars officially ended in 3028 with the conclusion of the Fourth war, but arguably the Clan Invasion, Word of Blake Jihad, and seizure of Terra by Clan Wolf to establish the Third Star League are all Succession Wars in their own rights.
Honestly, I'd love to come and talk about the parallels between BT and the real world, but I've got to take care of some BS first. :D
I always thought that the realistic parts of Crusader Kings was the inbreeding and the watching dudes starve in the desert. Who knew watching 50 golden romboids plow through 10000 basic romboids also happened?
I don't know how broken it is now, but when they first released Retinues for CK2 it was worth it as Byzantium to only have a standing army of only Kataphraktoi, Horse Archers, and every horse archer and skirmisher mercenary in the world. It took three centuries to build up the infrastructure to support that force and bloodlines of distant relatives to govern the territories to be conquered, and only three decades to conquer all of India. Restoring the Roman Empire, after that, was more than a little underwhelming. The Frankish knights who didn't die from the sheer blunt force trauma of the weight of arrows were reduced to chunky marinara underhoof
Btw you can still try to join Crusade 1 You have to make the earnest attempt to travel back in time
The mud & blood & strange berries (coffee) is actually a recipe for gunpowder. Alas that as soon as the army gathered themselves from that explosion the Frenchman was burned at the stake, not for witchcraft as that was not a crime but believing witches exist was heresy and heresy would get you at the stake, the Frenchman was executed for crimes against cheese
One of the other advantages the Seljuq light cavalry had was their horses were mares. Some of them were in heat. The Crusaders were mounted on stallions. Who tend to become uncontrollable around mares in heat.
Usually getting into a discord server based off of something you hear on youtube tends to end with you ending up on a fbi watchlist. Glad to see space podcast is an alternate consequence
Wow. Spending a lot of time in my beloved medieval and ancient warfare! They had swords. Swords are way cooler than guns.
Just mixed martial arts with stabby things and heavy exoskeletons. Damnit gunpowder.
A crossover truly out of this world
