Hoping to get one over on their Spartan enemies, Athens is tricked by some fancy furniture and sweet chains and invades Sicily. Before the operation can even start, one commander who is trying to stop the invasion frames another for the crime of sacrilege, leading him to defect to the Spartans and convince them to join the war to stop Athens. Somehow, that isn't even the strangest thing that happens over the next two years.

I just wanted to share with you that my 14-year-old daughter asked me to read the highlands burn a chapter at a time before bed. We just started chapter 7 and she's already coming up with fan theories and used her new art set that you got for her birthday to draw a picture of midnight (I'll ask her share it when it's finished).

I read or heard somewhere that the real victors of the peloponnesian war was the Persians and Corinth. The Persians bankrolled both sides and kept them fighting longer than they would have otherwise, exhausting both cities. By staying out of it Corinth later defeated Sparta and became the biggest city-state on the block, for a while at least.

As a New Yorker, we dont just have Syracuse and Attica, we have Troy, Rome, Ithaca, Utica, Corinth, Camilius, Seneca; a bunch of them were settled in the neoclassical revival in the early 18th century

The movie heavily features Athenian naval operations. The spartan ships only show up right at the end with the queen leading.

The whole story sounds like some sort of self-destructive dilettante Olympics. Really sorry for the guys who got enslaved in the end. Now I understand even better why Aristophanes mocked this war so strongly.

And let's not forget why Alcibiades had to leave Sparta - seducing one of the Spartan queens and getting her pregnant. Probably some others too.

I disagree with the absolute statement that Nicias was responsible for castrating the Hermae to stop the Sicilian Expedition. It's certainly one of the theories, but in reality, no one knows who did it.

So much of Classical Greek history is so similar to modern history. The Athenian/Spartan Cold War, the politics, the "security alliances" which are really just protection rackets, the foreign interventions and mission creep, so much hasn't changed. The same goes for Rome.

Also Alcibiades absolutely smashed the Herms. 1) he'd been blabbing about The Mysteries 2) I don't think he wanted to do the thing, a trial over the herms & given his popularity would have been a slap on the wrist & a "invasion doesn't proceed"

Can't believe it didn't come up that the stone markers they accused Alcibiades of destroying were a bust of Hermes on top of a stone block with a dick and balls carved into it.
