I'm gonna start a garage band just so I can call it "Banzai-Related Shenanigans."

D
Domnahl · May 6, 2026

When it comes to who was in the photo; that whole battle was probably a bit of a blur for everyone

D
Dany · May 6, 2026

Deeply disappointed no one started singing leonard cohen hallelujah when Joe said “the fourth and the fifth”

Oh you'd hate to be the IJA guy who has to run up and reclaim the destroyed American tank husks to keep your Mass economy going in Supreme Commander FA.

N
Noblese Oblahaj · May 6, 2026

Call him spelunkin' Ira Hayes, he won't answer any more

N
Noblese Oblahaj · May 6, 2026

Joe drinks the milk monster and his asshole opens like the space ship from Independence Day just before it blasts the white house

T
Tom · May 6, 2026

17 aircraft carriers? SEVENTEEN?

N
Noblese Oblahaj · May 6, 2026

The plan was for the United States Navy to have a hundred and fifty-ish by the end of the war. They almost got there.

L
Le Di Chang · May 5, 2026

Two alcoholic amphibious warfare experts on the podcast history? Must be an occupational perk at this point.

N
Nick Fontaine · May 5, 2026

Catastrophic Spelunking would be a great name for Tom's studio

I got a kidney stone in the second grade, let me tell you it wasn't fun

Look I’m a Seabee dozer operator!

J

I can't wait to work "catastrophically spelunked to a permanent end" into a conversation.

About war photography: Check out Tony Vaccaro's photographs from his time as a scout in an infantry unit. Later in life he becomes a fashion photographer but during WW2 he smuggled a camera from the Normandy campaign, through France, into Hurtgen and the Bulge all the way into Germany and takes some of the craziest stills that he then forgot in a trunk for 70 years. There's an excellent HBO documentary about him.

Ya'll should cover the land battle of Leyte. It has a moment where Japanese paratroopers end up landing in the HQs of American paratroopers and hijinx ensues. As well as dudes getting schwacked by supply drops on a regular basis. Frankly the 11th Airborne in WW2 is a good topic for a video unto itself.

When Ine Jima going to happen

Ladies love being properly splulunked with care

G
George Shannon · May 5, 2026

There was an old timer in my home town who was a flamethrower on Iwo Jima. Dude was….different. The 92% casualty rate and all the shit he went through as a 19 year old on that island definitely explains it.

So glad you mentioned "The Pacific," I love that show. It makes "Band of Brothers" look like that Disney Boy Scout movie Kurt Russell made when he was like 13.

S

I think a spelunking badge would be a fun merch idea

Do you smell toast?

Got to share some knowledge from the Battle of Iwo Jima part one episode with my sister. We had a center fundraiser at an American legion for her and after it was done. We were cleaning up and looking at the “honor roll” of names on the wall. She goes do you pronounce this guys name as Albert Fuchs I said nope that is Albert Fucks and he wins the name alert for yesterday.

C
Curtis Hog · May 4, 2026

I fear tom might never leave if he goes anywhere near a Bia hơi spot in Hanoi.

N
NowhereMan661 · May 4, 2026

The thing about the flag raising photo is that it's so perfect that there is no way it was intentional. Only random chance could produce an image that well composed.

G
Gil the Gilded Dragon · May 4, 2026

Yall laugh about the mephitic steam bunkers but they are amazing for one's rheumatism & they leave one's skin looking fantastic!

G
Gil the Gilded Dragon · May 4, 2026

Oh. So they got a lvl 18 mage with access to Meteor Swarm. So they wanted to reduce iwo jima into owo jim

B
Ben Schwabe · May 4, 2026

Jebus the "we can't be sure because everyone involved died later in the battle" rate for this episode is insane.

C
Chris Budke · May 4, 2026

A liter of alcohol a week is a lot? My destroyed liver laughs at those numbers. I'd easily go through a fifth and a half every night for years. Alcoholism!

N
NowhereMan661 · May 4, 2026

"Call him Drunken Ira Hayes, he won't answer anymore. Not the whisky drinking Indian or the marine that went to war."

S
Someguy · May 4, 2026

I dont know if its maybe on your later-down-the-line pipeline but have you thought to do a episode (maybe series) on the hussite (wars) from 1419 ? It has multiple failed crusades, possible one of the first drive-by with guns, even the word pistol comes from there and a One-eyed General as thought of a Center Point.

J
Jonathan Bastow · May 22, 2026

I have also heard an argument that the hussite war wagons were the first technicals, civilian vehicles with ad-hoc modifications to make them usable in battle.

Z
Zach · May 4, 2026

The Pete hegseth riff involving joes dad is insane levels of savage.

“Overcome his drinking problem” as a euphemism for the same thing Joe has used “couped himself” as a euphemism for is diabolical and I LIVE

P

Comprehensively spelunked is more of a sticker than a shirt

b

I stopped for breakfast on the Navajo reservation at the code talker museum/burger king once. So they could use a proper episode.

J
Jamie Knocke · May 4, 2026

My paternal grandfather and my maternal great uncle were on Iwo at the same time. My uncle was a flame thrower who was on the south end of the island. He was shot in the neck and died on a hospital ship. My grandfather was on the north end of the island as an officer. I believe that was when he was awarded his first Bronze Star. My uncle was awarded the Silver Star posthumously. It gives me chills to listen to this episode

M
Matt · May 4, 2026

“The Ballad of Ira Hayes” is one of Johnny Cash’s best songs.

C
Concorde · May 4, 2026

Ngl, every time you guys bring up Amtraks, I'm just imagining a fleet of GE Genesis trains crashing into the beach like it's the sandworm battle in Dune part 2

Just a reminder, the trump goverment tried to remove this picture from there websites and other places because they thought it was DEI nonsense attack. Yes one of the most iconic and american fuck yeah pictures was loook down by the the trump goverment because it could have been DEI to them. One if the many example of trump and maga being stupid fasicst racist pieces of shit who the one who hate USA the most.

S
SouthpawFL · May 4, 2026

The last century of progress in the US was an aberration that men like Trump are trying to make up for now. The US worked hard to get to this point.

S
