A tiny speck of inhospitable black sand turns into hell on earth as tens of thousands of men slaughter one another over caves, bunkers, and mountains. Armed with explosives, flame throwers, napalm, and more naval gunfire than the Japanese had ever seen, US Marines struggle through one of the most horrific battles of the Pacific Campaign of WWII.

In regards to how hot Iwo Jima is, I got to tour it in May2018 when I was stationed in japan with about 20 other people, it's geothermal heat is intense - We were told to make sure we hydrated days before we went, and to bring a gallon of water with us - 2 people were taken back to the plane for heat injuries before we made it to the top of Mount Suribachi - We were all sweating so much that we couldn't reapply liquid sunscreen (I'm a ginger. Sunscreen is a must.)
All right having relistened to this while not doped up on NyQuil, which episode is the one featuring Bush Senior almost getting cannibalized?
i forget which one, but its more of a footnote, there arent a lot of details. basically he gets separated from the rest of his crew when the plane goes down. he ends up getting rescued and they found out later the rest of the crew were captured and eaten by the japanese.
Louis Mosley is the grandson of Oswald and the head of PalantirUK. All Mosleys are bastards
Smh Joe thinks the Sabres played in the 1920s
If we're talking names, the top US Pacific theatre fighter ace was named Dick Bong
I'm starting to see a pattern with Olga.
"We must build and defend Fort Ass" sounds like something out of a John Waters movie, to quote the Task Force Baum episode, where the commanding officer is Divine with a gigantic gun
If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend the Japanese remake of Unforgiven starring Ken Watanabe.
Whaaaat, that sounds awesome!
Has Nate presented his Clint Eastwood theory before? I'm getting insane deja vu on this. Or maybe it was something adjacent on Kill James Bond?
Depending on how hot the ground got, they could have made a jerry rigged water distillery using island heat and even sea water for source fluid. Hell, if fortune really favors them, they could go the geo thermal route and have power as well.
If y'all ever do a Letters From Iowa Jima // Flags of Our Fathers bonus double feature I'd be very happy to listen to that.
Goes without saying, but you know it smell crazy in there
Absolute Dwarf Fortress behavior
I'm now convinced that DOUGLAS FUCKING MACARTHUR was a bigger dick than George Fucking Patton. I've had this opinion for a long time, but I thought it was bias due to the shitty way FUCKING MACARTHUR treated the Australian military. BTW, Parton might not have fucked a cousin, but he was definitely fucking his wife's niece, despite what his fan boys claim. He also has the distinction of attacking US citizens with soldiers. Even Fucking Macarthur recognised that was a massive dick move.
Douglas MacArthur was actually very woke for his time, he personally pardoned a unit of 731 black soldier's who were accused of nonsensical crimes based on their race. Look ip "Douglas MacArthur Unit 731 pardon" for more information!
This one had so many funny moments
Yeeeeeeesssss
Shit falls ftom my ass Like petals from cherry trees Welp this is my death
olga's life story sounds like that of a kurt vonnegut character
I just went to the Japanese Military Museum in Tokyo and they have Kuribayashi’s binoculars from Iwo Jima on display
Great episode! Amazing sacrifices on all sides. Also checked out Second Homes on Bandcamp. Really good stuff, well done.
tom! with love, clark was not a man of no nation. the cherokee nation had not lost its sovereignty in 1890, that wasn't until the reorganization act. he was cherokee
Khan is not a surname, but also Genghis is not a name either. In fact, Genghis may not even mean anything and Genghis Khan may have picked it because he didn't want to be associated with his final rival who used the title Gurkhan (Great King). On the other hand, Genghis Khan didn't really have a surname to pass down so the most appropriate translation would be like Temüjin Mongol or Temüjin Borjigin or something.
Jerkin my Gurkhan rn.
my great grandpa fought here, and i never got to meet him, so it's really cool to hear about this piece of my families past!
The citadel in the black sands surrounded by lava puts me in mind of that Clone Wars arc.
My Grandpa just spoke at the anniversary this past February. He was on one of the LSMs. He's 100
Oh shit, this is a big'un!
I'm ready to lose 10 hours of my life listening to this
Joe’s a real one for sticking up for Ana Nicole Smith.
As a former grunt marine, am much excited.
Chief of Staff Lahey? "I'm mowing the air Frank!"
Was listening to this on a bus and literally 30 seconds after Nate references I Got My Mind Set on You, the very same song came on the radio. Must be a sign
120°F is like 50°C, that's a shitty sauna. Ps. Torilla
I was driving when I listened to this episode, so I just assumed that it must be something like 90°C. 😅 I guess I should've figured that that would be too unlivable, but Joe made it sound hellish, so I DIDN'T KNOW!
Isn't more or less every Eurasian descended from Genghis Kahn?
My grandpa was at this battle on his 21st birthday. His birthday 'gift' was that he got to pull the bodies back for identification. He never talked about what happened there past that one comment, so I'm actually really grateful you'll be talking about this. RIP Grandpa Roy.
Japanese military so psychotic they did chemical warfare to their own soldiers.
sulphur is also quite... flamable. Using it to wash clothes is just turning your clothes into Xing Huang Di's Alchemical Vestments
How did that lady not end up with a bigass CULT taking over the western seaboard?
Tom’s ad plug for the live show was perfection.
As a Taiwanese American, I want to thank the US government for not bombing my grandparents
Much like Toms lunch, we eating good this series
I shall wear my Emu Jima shirt for subsequent parts.
I need a new sticker for my car
