Lions Led By Robots 21: Angel Slop
Looking into the watershed of Anno's creative process we're going clanker-light and implicit trauma heavy as we discuss editorial strategy, AI prescience, and how all those NERV console graphics are actually explaining how Joe is related to Madonna.

Tom, I've been trying to fix that "I must be either productive or feel bad/guilty" issue for YEARS now! Good on ya for recognising it, all the best tackling it!
Super proud of you, Joe
I treat tactic style games like rogue-lites (like). First save file is just the fuckery learning the mechanics and the farming methods. Then the second save file is where the fun ramps up.
I'm gonna adopt this
On having too much cheese: it freezes.
I feel like a prick given the circumstances but I’d pay like $60 for a black LLBD Nerv shirt
Would also just fucking send $60 because of said circumstances. Thank yall so much for providing content given everything
In the movie Caligula they pronounce longings the same way. There's also weird cum scenes in that too.
That's just Caligula
“Tastes like shit” gotta get a tramp stamp with that
Shinji and Asuka's failed kiss I my opinion is the axium upon which the direction of the whole show shifts. It all starts going downhill for everyone after this. We see throughout the show so far that Asuka wants to be seen as an adult, to be seen as attractive, to be desired, to have her value affirmed. She is constantly being clingy around Kaji because she wants a man she is attracted to to reciprocate that attraction, and affirm her through that. But the problem is that she is continually unable and unwilling to allow herself to be open or vulnerable, she is always putting on the act of the Great Asuka Langley Soryu, wanting to be better than everyone else, and being incredibly abrasive as a result. She is putting up this wall between herself and others, while still wanting that personal connection, but she's unable to let her guard down. When she tries to get Shinji to kiss her, she is trying again to have a personal, intimate connection with someone else. But she can't let her guard down. She can't be the one to authentically ask for this connection, she can only present is as if it were a game, and can only convince Shinji to do it by bullying him, because presenting it as a genuine offer of affection and connection would be allowing herself to be too vulnerable and too open, and she's terrified of that. And on the other side of this relationship, you have Shinji, who could not be more the opposite of Asuka. While Asuka is very forward and aggressive, Shinji is meak and defensive. He has spent his whole life hidden away from the world and not engaging with his emotions and desires. But just like Asuka, he has these desires for connection, and he is unable to allow for that vulnerability and openness to allow that to happen. While Asuka deals with her issues by acting and distracting herself, Shinji just hides away in his shell and becomes passive. Back to the kiss. Asuka, being the active one, tries to incite the kiss, but in this indirect way that doesn't show her true feelings. Shinji, being passive and defensive, has to be provoked into accepting it. And of course, because neither of these two have been able to be open with each other and neither really know anything about the others life, Asuka pushes all the wrong buttons and hits at Shinji's trauma with his mother. Because these two have never talked about this, and if course she doesn't know how difficult that is for him. And then they both stand there, staring into each others eyes, walls down, both at the threshold of vulnerability, neither about to take the first step and engage with the other. They are both vulnerable, they are both longing for the other, they are both afraid, and both wait for the other because neither are able to take the first step. And so, Asuka, unable to endure this, throws her walls back up, and with the excuse that she doesn't want Shinji breathing on her, plugs his nose and pushes forward with a full but not emotionally open kiss. And they linger on it, in this interpersonal emotional chaos and confusion, Asuka still waiting for Shinji to take the initiative and embrace her, and Shinji unable to do so out of fear and paralysis, until Shinji is finally unable to breathe, and forcefully breaks off the kiss. For Asuka, who probably wants a connection more than anyone else, but is unable to to honestly and openly put herself forth, this is the most open she could possibly be, the most vulnerable she has allowed for herself to be, and from her perspective, she was rejected. She opened her heart, and was stabbed, not able to understand Shinji's perspective in this. She runs away to the bathroom and turns the water on because she can't be in this situation, she's in total despair and embarrassment. She let herself be vulnerable once and the sting of rejection hurt more than anything else. And when she smells Misato's perfume on Kaji, the only other person she could possibly have a intimate connection to, it's like a second stab in the heart. She feels completely rejected and disregard. She is alone and hurt. Evangelion is all about our connection with others, and how difficult these intimate relationships are. When we put our defenses up and isolate ourselves out of the fear of the pain that these connections may cause, we make it even more difficult for ourselves to form these connections. The failure for Shinji and Asuka to form a connection here, and the cracks that begin to form in their defenses, are what lead to them being unable to cope with what happens in the rest of the story, and the downward spiral that follows.
I'll say it right now: the crazy esotericism and religious mysticism isn't actually that important to understanding what the show is saying. It's set dressing. You can certainly read into it and uncover some interesting symbolism that works with the themes, but the vast majority of the shows message can be understood through the story directly. It's a story about depression, trauma, identity, and the difficulty of relationships, you don't necessarily need to have a comprehensive understanding of kabbalah to get that.
Oh God, this series is going to start hitting deep once we get to the stuff with mothers. I'm sorry for your loss and all the messy feelings involved with that, Joe.
John Redcorn voice actor was shot dead because he was gay
3rd netflix dub , everyone sounds like Alan from smiling friends
Sending positive thoughts your way Joe, glad you are getting a hand from friends and pros to help with your burdens. Who else was tipped off about the upload by the youtube short yesterday?
schizophrenic here! yeah he fucking nailed it for rei's dialogue
It's fascinating, I never heard that this was the intention with Rei before.
Hey Joe, deepest condolences mate. I remember my old man passing and it was deeply rubbish.
Can I get an “mhmm” count
Can't say it enough, Joe, we're so sorry, you have our deepest condolences.
Tastes. Like. Shit.
King of the Hill gets a little silly in the later seasons, but stays grounded for about of the episodes. But some episodes are just straight-up chain email grievances your uncle sends you (low-flow toilets, for example). Those are probably the weakest the show has to offer.
First few minutes really put where the pod has been recently into perspective. Very sorry for your loss Joe.
It feels like I've been waiting an eternity waiting for this new episode! I need my fix of lions led by robots
So happy to listen
