Once upon a time, the British Empire sent a very badly planned rescue mission halfway around the world to save a man who didn't need to be saved. It ended in hilarious failure.

Re: McGonagall: can it be that fhere are yet people who have not read the tay bridge disaster over a sausage lorne as part of a black mass version of Burns‘ night? He is so much more than just some guy. If Salieri is patron saint of mediocrity, he could claim to be the laird of minced words.

Walk into a room, throw a rock into a British officer's lap and say, "Next one's coming at you faster."

I was so excited for this episode, I went back and relistened to the ‘Bad Gays’ podcast’s “Gordon of Khartoum” episode to hype myself up for this one. I think one particular aspect of Gordon’s Weird Officer Class British Empire Guy psychology mentioned in the ‘Bad Gays’ episode sort of explains why he didn’t leave, besides just your standard honor fixation: Gordon had a lifelong death wish, combined with extremely fervent and buckwild religious beliefs, and wrote in his journals and letters home that he wanted to end this life and get to the next as quickly as possible. In his earlier military career, he was well-known for leading his men from the front, unarmed. Never before has a man wanted to connect himself to God’s wi-fi so badly.

As one of your Muslim listeners I can attest to the fact that Muslim uncles act like they’re the sixth pillar of Islam. It was only as an adult I realized “salat-ul-Uncle” wasn’t a real prayer.

n
nightshade · September 21, 2025

Another Muslim listener here to confirm. Big part of growing up Muslim is dealing with a dozen different uncles acting like they’re Allah’s personal gift to mankind. Bonus points if you’re a young girl, you will never hear the end of it
