During WWII, the US launched a mission to kill Isoroku Yamamoto, the architect of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, which only went so well due to Yamamoto really not caring about his own safety and ignoring constant warnings from his subordinates.

The "little guy from Idaho inside a spud gun" theory is not that far off. After the war, Thomas George Lanphier Jr. lived in Boise where he was an editor at the Idaho Statesman.

I was expecting some anecdotes about Yamamoto, be use there are a lot of them. Like him being a prolific gambler to the point of sometimes going into debt or betting on war related stuff. I have to go and find my notes I wrote but there are good ones.

Noblese Oblahaj · September 25, 2025

For instance: in Japan, if you wanted a taxi to stop for you immediately, you could hold up five fingers. This said "I will pay you five sen just for stopping". Yamamoto would do this while wearing his dress uniform and gloves, then give the driver 4 sen. If the driver protested, he would take off the glove, show his missing finger, and deadpan say, 'I clearly signaled four.'

There was literally an Oscar winning short film about a neo-nazi who gets full body tattooed by a black guy as punishment for being a neo-nazi, and he then gets shot by his son because he thinks he's black. It's called Skin (2018).

Pretty sure all of the surviving pilots on the American side got a gag order and sent home immediately for training duties for the rest of the war, to keep them away from potential Japanese reprisals. All the surviving Japanese pilots also got a gag order, were sent to the Solomons and told to die honorably. I think one guy survived the war.

Can confirm that the DC Hilton where Reagan was shot is uniquely situated so it isn't a super convient walk to either DuPont Circle or Adams Morgan where there are lots of places to eat. If you're not at a con it's a nice walk to either part of town. I should know I was trapped there at a college radio convention when I was in college.

Not sure if it meets the criteria for “Random Irish Guy Shows Up” but as Lenin was mentioned: I read somewhere that Lenin learned English from a guy from Dublin. Which means Tom can do bits as Lenin using his Conor McGregor voice

L
Lions Led By Donkeys Podcast · September 16, 2025

That claim is made by Roddy Connolly, son of James Connolly. Roddy travelled to russia multiple times between 1920 and 1921 and met Lenin during those trips. There are no recordings of Lenin speaking in English. Without recordings it's hard to verify it but both Connolly's testimony, and an anecdote from Lenin's wife that while listening to speakers in Hyde Park he found it easier to understand one of the speakers who was Irish supports this theory.
