It's officially Neon Genesis Evangelion season here at LLBR!

I absolutely joined the patron just LLBR.
My impression of juiced up Shinji in the WWE is just David from Edgerunners
ngl i've only seen the netflix version and i just assumed the idiosyncracies like the weird nerv pronunciation and the third children title were due to specific lore things i wasn't getting ¯\_༼ •́ ͜ʖ •̀ ༽_/¯
YES! OMG getting Joe into Evangelion and Warhammer is such a combo. If this is anything like other Eva podcasts I've listened to, one or both of the hosts will realise they're trans by the end of the series...
Once you do Gundam 0079, you have to check out all the Anno interviews about first Gundam
Time to break out my Blu-ray copy! Congratulations!
Doug the Donkey fits perfectly into Turnip28 which also is a perfect crossover of Joe's nerdom but let's let him get through 40k first.
Never finished it, so now I gotta. It’s quite profound in a way (a fucked up way)
Greatest anime of all time.
I cannot believe it’s finally time. I’m dead. GOD bless you all.
Thoroughly enjoying the new series, though a return to finish off the last two sharpes movies (peril and challenge) would be awesome.
I watched the original ADV Films release w/English dubs in 1998 on VHS. I had a "NERV Employee Parking Permit" on my first car in 1999. I bought Japanese market merch off eBay before Y2K. I've been clean from NGE for 25+ years but man... I'M SO HERE FOR THIS!!
This is my favorite episode of the each month. Also, eva's animation quality night have to do with Anno being ex-ghibli and Ghibli helping them animate some if the episodes.

Tom regarding Misato “Sometimes I fantasize about Misato coming home drunk and beating me until I feel numb. She kicks me in the ribs until I can hardly breathe. Then she starts to cry and apologizes, begging me to forgive her. She holds me all night as I gently cry into her t-shirt.”
Very excited for this. (Even though I wish you were doing Big O).
Big O! Action!
What happened to the art?
Subbed to the Patreon for Lions led by Robots. Loving the show. Hope you eventually watch Vision of Escaflowne, the mecha with Isaac Newton as the main antagonist.
Does anyone else prefer the rebuild ending to the original anime and end of evangelion ones? Tom is the second person I've heard of who despises it but I'm the opposite, really hated the original endings.
While I know there's no robots, quite the opposite genre in fact, they should watch Berserk
sorry tom i might have you beat with an EVA half sleeve
Guys Mike Israelet is like the most followed anti-emhancement advocate. Go on Reddit and se how many people he saved from taking anabolics. Also the most humble guy if you knew him in person
Can we have a Joe talks another 40k series please? 🙏
I believe Liver King’s eye is permanently dilated because during one of his stupid viral workouts an elastic band exploded and damaged it lol
God finally
Doing my duty of liking and commenting on every LLBR episode to keep it alive 🫡 LLBD and Eva have been linked in my head since they used the theme at the first live shows, so I'm glad it's finally coming full circle!
I like this.
YEEEEAH
This may be the only way I digest Neon Genesis. I could NOT get into watching it. So what better way to learn than from LLBR. And yesssss warhammer 40k. And even better, Imperial Guard.
I haven't listened to this episode yet, and I'm a bit worried about Tom hyping up the thing too much, because it's a series I never liked and I wouldn't mind seeing Joe be more even-handed about it.
I like how the first 30 minutes of these is indistinguishable from Hell of a Way to Dad
tom & joe represent the hell of a way to uncle side of the shared discord
All you had to do to get my money was talk about my absolute favorite work of fiction. I'm gonna have so much fun watching this unravel, just like my mental health did when I watched it all those years ago.
First watched this series when I was smack-dab in the middle of a depressive episode and my biggest takeaway was “oh, THAT’S what I’ve been feeling lately.”
Yeah my first time watching Eva was a bootlegged VHS with hard fan subs back in like 2003 or 2004 (gdi it was so long ago).
Get into robots, Tom, or else Liam will have to cast again
It’s good folks
I love this series
There's a video on YouTube called something like Evangelion in 10 minutes that's a great take on the anime...
https://youtu.be/tc0u3pBI7ug?si=A3IIqYZzsXl8Ml6O it's 5 minutes and it's awesome.
I am distantly recalling a feminist critique, and I apologize in advance because I think I read this at some point in high school and have no memory of where I read it, of Eva where Rei and Asuka (both women) are always ordered around and effectively dismissed, while Shinji is set up to have women placed around him to lure him into being conventionally masculine (emotionally impassive, "strong", finding it very easy to kill). Something very manipulative about the Episode 1 scene where Shinji is convinced to get in the Robot is when Rei is wheeled out right in front of him on her hospital bed to make him feel guilty about putting her through that again (also, make him feel guilty that a "girl" could do it but he can't, apparently.) So the effect is that Shinji is kinda always getting the (extremely manipulative) kid glove treatment while his two women squadmates and coworkers are treated like shit.
While there is also definitely a much more concise statement you can make over the whole show as opposed to the first two episodes, I was trying to bring what I remembered specifically to the first couple episodes aha, since I didn't want to like, prefigure anything the LLBR crew had already planned to say. I also think the idea that Shinji's treatment is fundamentally different than his coworkers isn't really all that superficial, and it's certainly not about who gets screentime. Rather, it's about how the women characters are used when they get screentime to manipulate Shinji. I left it specifically at Rei being wheeled out on the hospital bed directly in front of Shinji since that is what happens in these two episodes, but expanding that, you can also include the sexual aggression Shinji is encouraged to show to Rei in the groping scene (and Asuka, who hasn't entered the cast yet), which seems to be directly counter to Rei's desire/lack of desire for any intimate relationship with Shinji. You can look at how Rei, who has been commanding EVA units for far longer and should by seniority be preferred for command, is instead relegated as a subordinate to Shinji instantly. You can look at how Misato is set up to be manipulating and using Shinji under the guise of a mother and one also-very-creepy scene again later in the show. Gendo's use of women (and insodoing, denying them agency and exposing them to both militant and sexual violence to build this construct to contain and constrain Shinji) to affect his control over Shinji and the rest of the world (prefiguring some of the Instrumentality stuff) seems pretty obviously patriarchal in nature (and Gendo is quite literally a patriarch). A sort of system of roles based on Gender for the ultimate benefit of the Patriarch.
Oh heck yeah I do love painting the miniature little dudes :3. I am also slowly learning to 3d print my own minis, but I have been hamstrung in this by my printer breaking :c
Has anyone recommended they watch “86: eighty six”? Military and robots 🫡🫡
Looking for a man to save you from the dark and make you feel good about yourself? smh just ASK HIM OUT.
Saying NERV like Snoop from The Wire
Would you guys ever consider doing a podcast about gym culture/ fitness bastards? Because I would listen to that… ps the intro with the muscle dude makes me laugh every time
Gosh, wish I could show Tom my original CEL collection for EVA.
i've always thought of misato as being like 30. when we meet her ex later it's clear they've known each other for a long time, i don't think her being in her low 20s tracks.
Did anyone else think that Tom said Joe Rogan was turning it a theropod?
I look forward to these every month. The Netflix dub sounds really bad, thank god I never had to watch it
I’ve never seen it…. So how inaccessible is it to this old person?
It's watchable, but you're gonna grumble a "...what?" at your screen every now and then -Kyle
hell yeah pumped for this series!!
At 27 miutes... I can say, trans people hella connect with the themes in NGE
Eva is very important to me and I distinctly remember watching it when I was 14 and falling in love with it completely. So cool seeing you guys discuss this and the history behind it!!
same, even the same age when i first saw it -- ngl i'm kinda hesitant to listen because i'm so precious about my mental illness mecha show lol
Niarve Automata
I remember watching EVA in Ireland circa 2008/2009. There was some random ass channel hiding in the weird religious channels on Sky Digital (or the dodgy box thereof) that for some unknowable reason showed two hours of anime from 11pm to 1am on Tuesdays and Thursdays only. It showed Eva, Cowboy Bebop and two other random anime I can't remember. It was some weird fucking times back then but I made it work. All that to say, looking forward to this season.
Wearing my York Automatons shirt in honor of this glorious occasion!
This is gonna be fun! Get in the Robot boys!
I have been asking you to watch Pluto for like a year now. It is exactly what you mentioned - it's Astro Boy & the Consequences of the Deposal of Saddam Hussein, written by the guy who did Monster. 8 1-hour episodes on Netflix, I think.
You should probably try asking SuperEyepatchWolf again he does do Eva
The johnny craig bit made me yell good lord
truly was jumpscared by jonny craig macbook lore
I loooove this. The tension of Joe pushing casual chat time while Tom overflows with nerd passion to keep this thing on the rails. Beautiful
As a paying customer who is not into 40k. I would listen to/watch ya'll do 40k campaigns.
I'm a little disappointed we didn't get the Evangelion OP, but also G Gundam has one of my favorite OPs so it's fine
I think this is what finally gets me to watch NGE.
ALAB and 40k mention 🥳🥳🥳
LLBR LIVES OOOON!
Liver king discourse lets goooooo
Oh shit, here we go again...
Last year, they put End of Evangelion on at the theater of a mall, and I got to watch it subbed.
Assuming there are no copyright issues, if you don’t make this logo into a shirt I’m unsubscribing
Happy Wednesday everyone truly a day to rejoice.
Shingi Ikari? SIMUDZAI MUREZA, VAKOMANA. SHINJI IS NOW ZIMBABWEAN 🇿🇼
Shinji is ZANU, Misato is ZIPRA
Out of all the animes, I feel this is the anime you need clinical depression to watch.
Oh hell yeah I'm qualified
Funny how I used to make of my friends who watched this show as a kid and here I am in my 30’s excited to hear a podcast talk about a show I never watched. Crazy how we change over the years lol.
Let's fuckin gooooooo
We got our hands on the Red Cross Book for NGE in late 2001 or early 2002
I haven't seen this since high school and faaaaark this is gonna be wild. It totally wrecked my brain the first time. I was about 15 when I saw it.
I highly reccomend a rewatch, it definitely hits different when you're closer in age to the irresponsible adults than the overly responsible kids.
Oh hell to the fuck yes.
I saw the episode name and yelled. I'm so ready
I was expecting this but still not prepared for it
Oh boy the quintessential robot show!
