EARLY EPISODE: The Siege of Tyre
Joe, Nate, and Tom discuss the time that Alexander the Great altered the geography of the planet in order to build a huge land bridge and punish Tyre for not letting him visit the ancient world's most instagrammable temple.

Just read Harold Lamb's Alexander of Macedon. Amazing story. His achievements would be unbelievable if he hadn't left such a deep impression across such a wide swath of ancient Eurasia
There’s also a Boston sludge metal band from the late 90s to late 2000s called Isis 😂
The type of personality that lets a person get into a position to try and conquer the world is also the type of personality that requires that person to also occasionally lead the charge. You simply can't have the one without the other.
I just wanted to point out that a study of medieval sieges found that 98% of them failed. The average length of time of a siege was 4 years. From the dawn of civilization until about a century after the invention of gun powder, if you wanted to keep an area from being conquered you just built a big fuck-off wall around it. Alexander taking a city like Tyre in months, not years, was actually extremely remarkable in and of itself.
Any chance you all cover the 1980s protests in South Korea? I just finished Human Acts by Han Kang and during the first 10 pages I literally thought “ah fuck this is quite grim”
Oh god, the return of Nazi Mickey.
Something to look forward to lmao
Contrast that dedication and commitment to corpse infrastructure to the failure of the Gaza Aid Pier.
To add to the isis but the game smite had to change the name of the goddess isis to eset
I’m pretty sure Tyrian purple came from snails, not plants. Peddan(t’s/ts’) corner much, but molluscs matter.
Also chartreuse is a green color, not a purple one! It’s named for the liqueur!
Melkart Melkonian.
ISIScoin was a thing, but it was physical gold coins.

Did Joe stop doing cold opens for the episodes?
So much talk about wearing purple the damn Gogol Bordello song kept playing in my head. https://youtu.be/SkkIwO_X4i4?si=-P397jMCcd0m-Ri4
Alexander was a pierless general, which is why he built a causeway instead

The Tyrians actually had Eels like Pokémon to defend the city walls. The Tyrian Car batteries tossed at the great horror to Alexander The Great of Auto Zone, was working at first. Then Alexander and his gym master deployed several rock type Pokémon and eventually won the day after month of long sieges. If only the people of Tyre would evolved thier Magikarp into a Gyaradose, they could’ve held. Instead they fell to their own pleasures, throwing your car battery into the ocean.
I threw my car battery in the ocean and got a fine! I told the officer that's what Alexander the Great did, and he said "Who cares about some rapper?"
Just imagine if Alexander had access to white monster. He'd have dammed the whole Mediterranean.
this is complete madness, i had never heard about this, human history is wall to wall fucking insane
Read about chinese history, it‘s all insanity every time they went to war with each other
Joe "Sonic the Hedgehog" Kassabian
When i first heard about the geography be altered, I first thought this was about that one city that was sacked, and then the conquors supposedly rerouted a river over it, wiping it away or something like that.
Man Joe really nailing his sexy radio host voice for this episode
Antoine Dodson is a black Hebrew Israelite who claims to have prayed the gay away.
Antoine Dodson goes over the trajectory of his life post "hide your kids" on Jaime Loftus' podcast 16th minute of fame (a Robert Evans production). It was quite the journey.
You know Prince would have rocked that Helenic drip.
It is interesting, I wonder if there is a dichotomy between greek nationalist emmigrants to other countries and greek nationalists in Greece on whether they are Balkan or not. The one Greek nationalist I know firmly believes Greece is Balkan.
I asked a Serb, and they said Greece is definitely not in the Balkans, lmao
Possibly unpopular opinion. Episodes like this make me miss Liam. A “well there’s your problem” take would be fun for engineering a causeway
I think they actually did bring it up I have a memory of Mallory Archer whining about it
Woo hoo everyone's favorite bisexual chaos gremlin
There’s a great Citation Needed episode that talks about Ayds the diet supplement.
So what you are saying is the corpses are acting as rebar for the land bridge
Oh fuck yeah we are finally talking about Big Al. What a maniac
Oh, lads, if only Tyrian purple was made from a plant…
I'm glad someone put that! It's some sort of snail iirc slightly more brutal than stomping plants...
Problematic Fave
Hard agree
Also yall don't talk about successes that much & Big Alex has the world's hottest run. Which is why Diogenes is Boss. Also Alex wasn't his dad's but rather Snake Zeus's adultery baby
If he abducts your sons he gives you horses!
