EARLY EPISODE: Operation Frankton

The British military, faced with the seemingly insurmountable problem of a heavily defended port, decide that there is nothing that methed out kayak-borne commandos on a suicide mission cannot handle.

The raid test. Is this mission stupid? Yes. Is this mission cool as hell? Yes. Does it do anything to help your side with the war? No. Then it’s definitely a raid.

I’m really surprised no one made a Dexy’s Midnight Rowers joke.

My highschool had some sort of link to the cockleshell heroes so I got shanghaid into a cadets trip to France to honor them while I had the flu. Ended up shitting myself in front of the host family and had to stay in the bus for every one of the memorial events. Realise now that this was the best way to honor those brave brave men.

I find the lack of German response to be so enigmatic. I wonder if they hallucinated getting caught or if the sentry was over this German shit.

Not related to this ep but yall gotta check out @leonievungern on TikTok. She’s claiming, seemingly truthfully, to be a direct decedent of baron Urgen-Sternberg. Could be the collab we didn’t know we needed

Are we talking about meth in WW2 again? Cool. During WW2, one of the leading US code breakers in the Pacific Theatre was A Guy. He wore a red smoking jacket over his uniform, and slippers. He had a sign on his desk that said 'you don't have to be crazy to work here, but it helps' next to what the book describes as 'a bucket of Benzedrine tablets' he grazed from all day and invited co-workers to use.

I like that their ideal guy for this mission is Harry DuBois

I'm using "going tactical mode" now as a euphemism for my Ptsd fueled hyper awareness. Thank you Nate

Ok it was a fiasco but only killing six of your own soldiers while moderately damaging some boats is a pretty good fiasco as it goes with commando fiascos .

You mean to tell me that Sargent big balls had to go all the way back into Europe. To put good British mines on German boats in a French river. This ain't the brexit I voted for.

At this point I'm starting to wonder if there has ever been a raid that wasn't a total clusterfuck.

"The Cockleshell Heroes" (1955) is an excellent depiction of this operation (with the obvious 1950s embellishments)

I remembered a similar operation on Singapore carried out by the Z Specials and British Commandos. This was Operation Rimau and ended with the deaths of all involved. It would be worth an episode because of the many, many fuckups. The British officer who led Rimau, Lt Col Ivan Lyon, had led Operation Jaywick in 1943. This sank or damaged 6 ships in Singapore harbour, and led to a very nasty wave of reprisals by the Japanese against Malay, Chinese and European captives.

I remember reading the book. And the movie was one of the times Trevor Howard won the war.
