EARLY EPISODE: The Order: Part 4

A friend of mine was a air-traffic controller at Seattle Center at the time of the Whidbey Island showdown. A few days before shit got real, he was controlling an aircraft flying under the identifier "Idaho." At that time, and maybe still, the Idaho identifier was used exclusively by the FBI. He suspected something serious was up because this particular Idaho aircraft was a freaking C-130.

After listening to the series I watched the movie and I could not take anything serious. Specifically how serious they showed the FBI and how bad they wanted to catch them

I know a lot of people have already mentioned Molly Conger's great series Weird Little Guys. She did an episode called Ku Klux Kable Access which talks about how The Order actually did a real fair amount of damage distributing that money across the wider white supremacist landscape. Also, Molly shouted out the pod when talking about the The Bophuthatswana Coup for an episode.

Saxony is the German equivalent of Florida so immediately my brain made "the awakening Saxon" into "the awakening Florida Man" and I hope this bit of absurd levity helps someone else.

Thank you Nate, for putting into words how much hearing people say this shit or try to justify it just makes me so frustrated and sick. I was never the kid who willingly believed in shit like this, but there were people who would try to package racist bullshit; teachers, scout masters, friends' dads; in ways where it would appeal to dumb kids in the early 2010s like I was and my friends were and in some cases it worked, and I went several years believing things I didn't realize how racist they were. And each time I'd come to realize how evil something I'd been taught by someone I'd trusted was, it felt vile. And to see movies claim to take it on while secretly just repackaging it yet again, it's even worse knowing someone got paid for that and thought they were clever.

I do feel sorry for Matthews' parents and family. Even today it's difficult for people whose family go down the far right rabbit hole to get them out. At that time it would have been awful to watch because general awareness of fascists movements outside the KKK was so limited. They were just an ordinary family whose son encountered the wrong people at exactly the wrong time. It's got to be gut wrenching to know your son and brother burned alive, even if he did deserve it.

For anyone who hasn't started listening to it yet, I can't give a strong enough recommendation for the podcast Weird Little Guys. The host and creator, Molly Conger, was living in Charlottesville during the Unite the Right rally. Her experiences made her determined to find and expose far right fanatics, or, as she terms them, Weird Little Guys. Her view is very much the same as Nate stated - WLGs are often ridiculous, but they're also extremely dangerous and evil. Many of the people from this series have also featured in Weird Little Guys.

I’m curious how Joe/Nate were trained differently to handle a Bob Matthew’s type standoff compared to the cops? Having read Joe’s memoir it seems like this was not an uncommon for y’all to have faced? Or at least similar situations in counterinsurgency?
