Once upon a time, a warlord in China worked his way up from the mostly illiterate son of a village exorcist and drunk, to becoming a street thug, and eventually an officer and military governor who gambled so much he bankrupted his province while riding into battle on an armored train full of his harem, which numbered in the hundreds.

Oh man, I can't wait for a Puyi episode. I am also a fan of that pathetic pitiful piece of shit and his miserable life story.

Imagine a conversation between him and Hong Christ, who he presumably never heard of, about the frustrations of dealing with civil service exam guys. Hong, incredibly heated and ranting about demons, Zhang just replying ‘skill issue’ and admonishing that he didn’t skip right to war-lording, neither having a single thought in their heads of logistics.

Man you gotta love the weirdos of the Chinese warlord era. I just read a book about Two-Gun Cohen if you ever want to one about “Why is this Polish-Canadian Jew so ride or die for Sun Yat-Sen?”

We have learned that to join the Chinese civil service street smarts is an acceptable alternative path to book smarts. If your pirating/banditry is strong enough — you can coerce the government into giving you and your homies a job.

I think it’s fair to say that this warlord was in fact in a battle mage, but it’s just a battle mage who can deploy thousands of peasants to do his bidding

Also in regards to the "head shaver" thing, while I'm not sure what Zhang Zongchang's father did exactly, there really was only one haircut you were allowed to have back then. In a very ineffective attempt at assimilation, the Manchu Qing dynasty forced all adult men (targeted at the Han) to wear the Manchu queue (shaved front, braid in the back) on pain of death.

If we've popped the cap off the Chinese Warlord Era, I feel like there's so many capital-g Guys to talk about. Like Zhang Xueliang, the opium-addicted failson of China's most powerful warlord at the time. After he takes over, he kicks his opium habit, (allegedly) has an affair with Benito Mussolini's married daughter, tells Japan to fuck off, and willingly joins the KMT. Later on he kidnaps Chiang Kai-Shek (AKA his own boss) to force him to stop fucking around with the Communists and focus on the invading Japanese.

Sometimes I imagine the Game of Thrones series to be a historical propaganda made after the fact, and that the real story looks more like the Chinese Warlord period
