Many people talk about Japan denying what they did during ww2. Dear turkey we will never forget and will spread the word of your despicable crimes as far as possible. Also, for any deniers here 🖕🏼
Joe, I just want to say thank you for doing this series. Growing up here, when it came to history surrounding the years surrounding WW1 and its aftermath, I really only ever learned about the Western Front, the Allied campaigns and, of course, the Royal Newfoundland Regiment. Hearing you mention the genocide in passing over 5 years since I stumbled upon the podcast, I never anticipated just how horrific it was and still can't understand how many countries still don't acknowledge it happened. And, to paraphrase something Nate said in episode 3: "Fuck to Turkey! Armenia champion!"
I know comparisons to the Wild West were made in part one but it feels like other then the holocaust parts of this echo manifest destiny or the indigenous Genocides that Europeans and the Americans were and had committed, some indeed being contemporaneous.
The abductions, relocations to hostile territory where you are expected to starve, framing massacres as battles, the attempts to erase all cultural and historical evidence or at least ignore it
What's also a fascinating story is the Dersim genocide against the Kurds that took place in late 1930s. Was this an effort to 'clean up' the executors of the Armenian Genocide?
Watertown, MA mentioned! They have THE BEST Armenian/Persian food. Gyumri bakery has the best lavash!
Thank you for sharing this. This may be a bit outside your normal subject, but would it be possible for you to (someday soon) talk about measures one can take to survive a genocide? I ask because it is easy looking back to say, "They should have fled at this point!" But in the moment, it is messy and it is hard to be sure where you are in the run-up until it is too late.
Education is important. The Holocaust museum has very strict guidelines of what to look for before things pop off. From what I am seeing today a lot of people are okay with facism because they don't think it will hurt them. These are the people that muddle the waters. They will gas light you into thinking you're the one insane. Best thing I can suggest is trust your gut. Stay informed and stay organized.
Im glad Joe took the time to take apart the German involvement in the Armenian genocide. I think very often there are people like SS officers working with the Ustase, John Rahbe, the guy behind operation and valkryie and other "good" nazis (or any other genocidal group) that are lionized when in reality its likely that their views on the matter were at best "I didn't think it would be this brutal" or at worst "Cmon guys kill them all but do it in a way that does not hurt my feelings"
Such an important message. I learned so much from this series, as always!
This was incredibly well handled and couldnt have come out at a better time.
Today I learned Tom and I are the same age
I was deployed to Incirlik…thanks lol
You're telling me I can get two whole nights of Nate? Damn, that's a Nate buffet
Speaking of the Cuban Missile Crisis, if anyone wants a good book recommendation that covers it and other cold war incidents/horrors/comedies, I recommend The Dead Hand by David Hoffman. Fascinating stuff.
Oh the lie about DNA tests being banned on Israel.....
Fuck Israel
As someone who is from Humboldt County, can confirm "Hella" was def an overused term in my youth. I dont think the youth speak actual English anymore now.
Enver Pasha did a reverse Ersan Ilyasova.
Somehow I found just the first 30 minutes darker than the previous episodes. Clogged rivers and burning hot shoes - the violence and sadism of the genocide were grimly expected. But the exploration of the psychology; the hatred, the misinformation and refusals to learn - especially in the backdrop of our own political climate. Makes it feel this behavior will never end.
The thing about people promoting violence that they can’t stand to watch is absolutely a part of why the Germans went for death camps instead of roadside shootings. Even Waffen-SS murderers became self-destructively unhinged after killing too many civilians. Also the thing about Al-Husseini giving Hitler the idea for the Holocaust is a bullshit story told by Netanyahu himself, among other people.
Eric Bogosian’s : “Operation Nemesis” is a book everyone in this community should read.
The thing I'm doing to make myself feel nice is going back and listening to ep 101
I noted that episode as well
Joe, thank you for covering this. I know it is extremely personal to you and I am sure there are some parts that really bothered you but you no sold it to get the information across for the sake of education. We see you homie. And we appreciate you very, very much. Nate I couldn't help but notice how solom you were during this series. I don't believe your heart can grow larger then what it already is. Tom I normally categorize you as the wild card. Your humor is innocent and just about good times. I can tell this series took a toll on you. Thank you for being a part of it and making things a bit lighter at times. Boys, Go have a few drinks, smoke some stuff and tell anickdotes of good times. You have more then earned it.
What better way to celebrate easter is by talking about a genocide. Need to listen to the Soghomon Tehliran episode, knowing that these monsters got a capped in their ass and german court basically went "well, germany did help the ottoman do the genocide, so consider this non guilty pass as an apology".
I was gonna post the same thing about Soghomon Tehlirian!
