Regarding the German Texas comments at around 10:00 - I recommend reading the Wikipedia article on the Adelsverein, the attempt by various members of German nobility to turn Texas into a German-speaking colony. My grandfather was fluent in Texas German so it's a subject I've always had a lot of interest in. Side note: The majority German-speaking counties were among the very few counties to vote against secession leading into the Civil War.

The power of the uncle nephew bond gave us LMFAO and produced the hit single "I'm sexy and I know it" so it can win us this war

I would love if they did an episode on the attempted establishment of utopian communities by French colonist in the late 1840's and mid 1850's. The Icarians was a utopian movement who attempted to establish a colony around what is today Dallas Texas during the 1848 revolutions. Later another attempt occurred with "la Reunion" by French and Belgian colonist in 1855 in what is today modern Dallas. This was led by a man named Prosper Victor Considerant, which, despite his name, never really experienced any prosperity, victory nor was considerant. So many things went wrong from getting scammed to the unpredictability of texas weather, and crop failure.

The talk of names reminded me of my great-great-great grandfather, Socrates. Apparently all of his friends called him Crates. Which makes me assume he was the original So-crates.

I know Tom has seen ‘The Terror’, so the fact that one of the first things that happens in this episode is an Irish guy asking about the rank of the captain’s dog is DEEPLY funny to me.

"Emu" derives either from an Arabic or Portuguese word for large bird. No idea why the Australian colonists went with that rather than an Aboriginal word.

Actually, duct tape was invented in 1943... by Vesta Stoudt? A munitions factory worker? During World War II? To seal ammunition boxes? God! This snark was brought to you by 6 Warsteiners and google AI.

The reason there are so many Germans in Texas is because of Project Paperclip, which brought thousands of Nazi rocket scientists and their families to Houston. Same reason there is a large German population in Alabama, especially around Huntsville.

P
Paul Völsch · March 24, 2025

Germans were already a pretty sizeable group in Texas before Operation Paperclip. A lot came over after the failed revolutions of the 1840s. Those are the ones that created the language of Texan German.

No! No free crocs and definitely no armed crocs. They live in the mangroves and the golf course pond near my family’s place and I have to furtively run past it. I’ll be giving it the nervous side eye while I’m super sweaty and my thighs awkwardly rub together and German tourists watch me from a distance.

L
LeobaL · March 24, 2025

The Darwin golf course has a lake that housed a saltie called Sludge. As far as I can tell he was evicted in about 2017. Shame. Salties in the water hazards would make golf a lot more enjoyable.

FDR always really liked the Navy. The USS Houston was his favorite until it got sunk and he loved to participate in the rituals aboard such as the crossing of the equator.

M

That submarine would need to be called a Yao-Boot. Wilmington was in 1898, but otherwise yeah, I was going to bring that up about how much of a huge piece of shit Daniels was. Here’s a solid book on that whole incident: https://bookshop.org/p/books/wilmington-s-lie-winner-of-the-2021-pulitzer-prize-the-murderous-coup-of-1898-and-the-rise-of-white-supremacy-david-zucchino/12471037?ean=9780802148650&next=t Plus there was the thing about FDR covering up the absurd anti-gay “investigation” in Newport.

Oh oh! Instead of a suicidal fleet, what about the ocean liner with a bloodlust for other ships, RMS Olympic! Her WW1 career gave her the sole distinction of being the only merchant ship to ram and sink a submarine in combat.
