Gym, tattoos, and interest in martial arts is like peak post addict, underlying depression, and/or divorced dad pathway. They've talked about the need to find a shorter mecha anime to watch next, so I'm going to throw out a couple suggestions: "Full Metal Panic!" (Yes, the exclamation point is part of the title.) 24 episodes. Unusual in that it has mechs functioning in a modern (circa 2001) military context, which seems suited for this podcast. As a result of mysterious advanced technology that started appearing the '80s, the Cold War has lasted longer. The protagonist is a former child soldier who fought the Soviets in Afghanistan (they changed the name of the country to Helmadjistan in the anime because it was right after 9/11), now working as a teenage mercenary. He gets assigned to an undercover bodyguard assignment at a high school because he's the right age, but has no idea how to function in civilian life, which is the show's main source of comedy. "Vision of Escaflowne" 26 episodes. Just about the opposite, this one is high fantasy where knights use magitech mechs powered by crystallized dragon hearts to swordfight each other. The protagonist's mech can also do the transformer thing and reshape itself into a dragon that he rides on.

Watch Evangelion next. This literally the best option for series.

If you think the 1990s dubs for anime were bad... you really should listen/watch the 1970s-early 1980s ones. Most of them feature the same voice actors again, but with the exception of Peter Cullen, the voices were really, REALLY bad.
