It is very important to remember that Rome was economically built on conquest, and that Carthage was largely seen by the pro-war faction as being an incredibly valuable place to loot.

Cato the Elder is one of the original Warhawk Ghouls of history, the man was an absolute bastard. He was considered an especially cruel slave owner IN HIS DAY.

Fighting Rome at its peak was like trying to deal with a Warhammer Total War AI on its bullshit. Delete three full stacks and six more just walk out of the fog

My just govt outside the army I had this as my quote. Don't quote me regulations! I co-chaired the committee that reviewed the recommendation to revise the color of the book that regulation's in... We kept it gray.

I am 100% sold on the recommendation of a Japanese history podcast that still hasn't left the (pre-historic!) Jomon period after 250 episodes.

Aging millenia here. The white monster was my favorite in late high school. After their divorce, my HS gf's mom would give us bacon and white monster in the morning before school. She tried to be cool as hell in the 'incredibly irresponsible mom who went from being a pregnant teenager to middle aged divorced woman and has reverted to her teenage tendencies' sort of way. And she's sober now too so she is cool as hell in a more mature way, we still talk at sober living events.

"honey, what the hell are you listening to in there? I've walked by your room twice the first time I heard something about inbred elephants and the second time something about people sliding around on their stomachs like savages!"

I would seal a guy in a room and force him to listen to Well There’s Your Problem until he starved (so like maybe 2.5 episodes)

Not many people know this, but Cato the Elder ended every speech with "But I ain't spending any time on it because in the meantime, every three months, a person is torn to pieces by a crocodile in north Queensland."

Did you know that the war elephant's design was inspired by the sturmtiger?

The really funny thing is that Roman armies got so good at fighting war elephants people in the Med basically stopped using them. Simply throw javelins at them and stay out of the way, ez.

B
Ben Yardley · March 8, 2025

That would work on me too tbf

Remember those like baby blue monsters and red monster cans? Classic shoppette combo. Wintergreen Long Cut, two Monsters, two tornadoes… Air Power? Or whatever we used to say… idk too much jet engine exhaust in my brain.

The “strange midwestern gas stations” thing that Joe mentions is so real. My favorite has gotta be Thirsty’s gas station and party store near Cadillac Michigan, they kept bears in a cage out front for almost 50 years until their last bear Samantha died in 1998

Tom why are you anti croc?

L
LeobaL · March 3, 2025

Actually Nate, the Romans didn't eat peacock as far as I'm aware. And it's actually really nice if it's cooked properly.

L
LeobaL · March 3, 2025

I've never realised this before, but the Punic Wars are a perfect exhibit as to why military appointments should be kept out of politics. Whenever Rome had a competent commander, the politicians in Rome would get upset he was becoming too popular, recall him, and put a political appointee in charge. So Rome starts losing big time and they have to accept competency is very important in military commanders.

Unexpected Bob Katter reference in an episode about Carthage

1
19ZXB Donkey brains · March 2, 2025

Haah! Caught Nate with a straight up inaccuracy. He referred to the Carthaginian elephants as animals from way south. That's false, as they were the now extict north African forest elephants.

Last weekend I dragged myself up an ice covered gorge across slippery uneven trails. I fell, struggled, and fought my way to the top. At the peak I sat to gaze over the goregous Kentucky forests as I pulled out my first ever crisp can of white monster™. As I sipped it I was overcome with the urge to die in a LLBD cold open. It was pretty good solid 6/10 would become a historian from boy again.
