The conclusion to our series on the Shimabara Rebellion!

This is the highest number of donkeys per lion that this series has covered so far. Holy shit, the attackers are terrible at their jobs.
Great listen. Pretty fun to learn about the events that inspired Ninja Resurrection. A masterpiece of whadafuckery in which ninjas with bazookas break the siege. Also that Jerome kid rides a dragon made of roof tiles and resurrects as Satan and holyshitthegore.
So enjoyed Joe and Tom talk art and literature. The pod is frequently in my ears when I'm wandering around bookstores myself. :)
The fact that Tom knew the work Maillard is outstanding!
Um. The Maillard reaction 100% happens in deep frying. It’s literally why things are crispy and brown when they come out of the fryer. I’m glad you know the word, but what it actually refers to is the crystalization and caramalization of the carbohydrates and proteins due to heat. In a pan, this only occurs where the surface of the food is touching, because the air can’t hold enough heat to cause the reaction. In oil, this can happen over the entire surface as long as the oil is over about 250 degrees F. Not trying to be shitty here, but providing “knowledge” even in jest and fun without looking it up, just normalizes being confidently wrong and encourages the Alex Joneses of the world. Just my 2c. You guys are still awesome.
I'm very confused by what Tom thought the Maillard Reaction was.
Dutch Tom ❤️
Anime dubs have gotten pretty consistently good in recent years. Hell, I started watching Solo Levelling specifically because I knew I liked Aleks Le, the English VA for the main character.
The helms deep approach😂
Getting dissed by traditional Japanese theater, "Noh bitches?"
The rebels just keep spawning ulcerated tree spirits and the samurai are done with that shit
Great series and super interesting question from the legion too
I suggest a 4 part series on the Anglo-Zanzibar war. each episode can cover 9.5 minutes of the conflict.
Not doing your job as a captain of the Dutch East India Company is probably the best you can do in that position.
Regarding Tom's point at the end about reading old stuff to improve your understanding of literature, I highly recommend the book "How to Read Literature Like a Professor" by Thomas C. Foster. Definitely helped me in that respect. Quick cheat, though: In western literature, if it isn't based on Greek or Roman myths, it's probably based on the Bible.
Diglet is the antithesis to samurai and now no one can tell me different. While you ride around in your horse, in your fancy armor, diglet is in the trenches, waiting to hit you with that super effective l.
Billionaire techbros have clearly read and watched a lot of nerd media. It's equally clear they completely missed the point. Like Joe, I just laugh when I realise Apartheid Emerald Boy thinks he's the Good Guy.
He clearly thinks Judge Dredd is the unproblematic good guy.
Joe… I love your work but PLEASE look up how to pronounce Japanese. Its phonemic so once you get the basics down its pretty easy to remember.
Shimabara peasants just hurling an insult like “Yo Mama so big she got her own gravitational pulls and it dictates the fates of the heavens.”
The New Yorker has an article about Mishima, and of course I thought of Tom.
Tom the Irish weeb justifies a lot of people’s RPG characters from the ‘90s.
Yesterday I learned that TRex had big lips
Also unemployed samurai get titles for the same reason unemployed unemployed sons of lords get titles... & they also have swords
Speaking of 40k and satire, have you guys seen the Space King videos on youtube?
Great segment on art and media at the end
I can’t get over the samurai military command standing around the letter, going “not an Amakusa fan but this is class”
I feel a competent government would have been "let's make him rule this province; we can exile all the Christians here & punish the idiot that made this all go sideways" but I forget myself that governments typically are not pursuant of competence as in "the people are happy" but competence as "the system is stable, self replicating, & the rich remain rich" therefore why bureaucrats & agoraphobic emperors abound in history.
We need to invent time travel just so Tom and Joe can go back to this battle to join in the shit talking.
Good for you Joe! And Tom! Keep it up! 👏 👏 👏
