Nate is such a good wife-guy. Also, man, as the resident “computer guy” of my household I felt the “6 hours of unfucking the internet at 3am because you know your partner is going to be upset if it’s not working” in my soul.

The classroom I taught in last year still had a map with Yugoslavia and Zaire on it.

My highschool was also a modified open concept building. It had 3 classrooms in the entire building with windows. My class was 2500.

Every marine (including myself) just got really angry at the revelation of Joe mentioning that we are all in fact: in the Navy.

While I disagree with Joe's takes on horses, I'm glad we are on the same page about eggnog. I also don't like drinking milk, or most products like yogurt, but I do like ice cream, so I'm not sure if we're totally on the same page.

As someone who also went to a retro-fitted open-concept school… it truly was a hell-hole architecture-wise. School designers in the 70s had to have been on the weirdest drugs to design that.

I am one of the rare individuals who has taken the MEAP (Michigan test), the ACT and the Leaving Cert and in retrospect I enjoyed the Leaving Cert faaaar more than the MEAP or ACT. It's just sad that it would be logistically impossible to implement in most states because of the way it's graded.

T
Thomas Lee · December 19, 2024

Probably worth mentioning that the only other person I know who did all three ended up going to West Point lol

Z

That reminds me of an alcohol-induced riot in my home country in 1873. Just to give an example from "continental Europe," I give you the "Frankfurter Bierkrawall" https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frankfurter_Bierkrawall. The too long didn't German is: A riot started when beer prices had increased at around 1600 on April 21. 1873 at a local fair. Breweries and taverns were vandalized when the mob took to the streets. Some brewery workers defended themselves with a hose and boiling hot beer. Local Police got immediately overwhelmed; six companies of local Prussian infantry were mobilized. The affair lasted till midnight, and the result was: 20 people dead, including a woman and a small boy, because soldiers had fired live ammunition, and 300 people got arrested.

At my high school we did the faux drunk driving thing but with real people as actors, I got to be the drunk driver who killed someone. It was even more fun because they poured a bunch of natural light all over the fucked up car and sprayed some on me so I smelled like beer. they arrested me as “example” Missouri is great.

The way that Nate is describing his middle school reminds me of my middle and high school in Kansas. There must be a uniquely Midwestern desire to put children in soul sucking cubicle prisons.

H

From the west coast, it's not just the midwest

W
William Shackelford · December 18, 2024

I definitely had the drunk driver wrecked car thing as well. when I was in high school they also did the drunk driving awareness thing. They had the dude, who was still in prison at the time, come speak to the entire school. And after wards we were all instructed to go walk up and see a totaled vehicle with a mannequin in it.

J
Jonathan Grafton · December 18, 2024

I had that, but the school was too cowardly to actually have a DUI guy talk.

A
Alex Duggan · December 18, 2024

Tom, I really need to know if you laughed for the reason I think you laughed when Nate said "Mega Milk Country." I need to know if your brain is as internet-broken as mine.

If anyone is going to extract audio from Joe’s eggnog critique. I think someone should splice when he said “ you know I really wanna get drunk on something thick and creamy” and create a club banger where that audio drops as soon as the bass drops. Summer Song of 2025 I could see.
