Something important to note is it was common to accuse powerful women of stuff like incest when contemporaries want to blame them for stuff failing.
Rebuttal, incest was also just more common back then, particularly among powerful families, ie. nobles and landed peoples. Not denying that the claim was probably used in a malicious manner or for self interest, just making sure it isn’t the only possibility.
I am also re- reading 1984 for the first time since I was a kid. I love Orwell’s style and I’m a sucker for tale about a dystopian society. I also figured it was pertinent to what’s going on in the world today. Great episode!
Instead of Join or Die, we need a flag that says Rock or Something
Adam Baldwin ain't even a real Baldwin. Imagine doing Baldwin stolen valor.
Oh man, it's been 20+ years since I read The Amtrak Wars!! Next on my reread list. Wish there was an audiobook of it 😥
Yup. Think Ive got some paper copies somewhere at home. Not gonna lie..... even as a british dude christ there's some toe curling shite in there.
now we officially have JoJo Kassabian as our host
don't forget about Versailles MO (pronounced ver-SALES) lmao
We have a ver-SALES Kentucky too. 🤦♂️
Me currently sitting in Branson MO 👁️👄👁️
BLUES BROTHERS MENTIONED!!!
Just wanted to note that the whole uncle / niece fucking might be completely made up by a couple of dudes that blamed Eleanor for pretty much everything that went wrong during the Crusade. Basically that the only reason these righteous dudes failed utterly was because this horny unclefucker weaseled her way into the Crusade, packed too much shit, and brought a lot of girls with her. I get that the incest version is funnier, in a "look at these inbred medieval freaks" way, but it's probably just scapegoating. It's not unknown for "historians" of the time to use incest as a way to smear someone, especially a woman.
This. It's kinda wild that it was stated as a fact and not just once. Wish they invited Janega or Wyman to guest on this one tbh.
As for random Saint names, there is a Saint Maurice and a Saint Bruno as well.
A VFW post nearish me hosts hardcore shows
We need some failed jihad episodes those wheee get as well
Are really a true royal if you aren’t just a little into mild incest?
Wait wait wait let's go back to the part where you had twitter beef with Animal Mother from Fullmetal Jacket
Who hasn't? He's a loud mouth Republican, that man called Jayne.
Wonder if Joe's dad liked Catch-22 and wanted to pull a Major Major Major.
learned today that joe is a jo jo huh.
I’m enjoying the crusades (episodes not the crusades). Any body got any good recommendations on books about Saladin?
The crusades by Thomas Asbridge is very good. As well the The Crusaders by Dan Jones
Stay safe sib.
The timing on the open was perfect. Lined up exactly with the sharp fade from the theme.
Imagine traveling back in time during this crusade and instead of a pop tart, you give the king of Jerusalem a cranberry Sprite
Stand User: Jojo Kasabian Stand: War Pigs
GENERALS GATHER WITH THEIR MASSEEEEEEEEEES
Thanks for the episode JJ
Didn’t some aspirational reality tv contestants just walk into a White House dinner function in like 2010? Nobody checked?
I must have hope in the American people to be able to strike their leader down with a rock.
Moctezuma II was maybe killed by getting hit in the head with a rock.
Joe and crew. You should cover the Battle of Didgori from this same era. Was it 15k Georgians vs 30k Seljuks? Or was it 10k Georgians vs a million Turks? Who cares!?! All that matters is Seljuks getting absolutely STOMPED by a much smaller force. Also bonus points for South Caucasians.
This would be epic
Thanks for this last night sucked.
Here with you big dawg from South Georgia.
Since it's been brought up what are we reading? I'm reading a shit load of Elmore Leonard.
The new Dan Jones about Henry the V. And The enchanters by James Elroy a great writer period crime novels
Patron Saint of Bowling Alleys… that was fucking hilarious.
Joe maintaining he’s a dumb arse then pulling facts about pontifical naming conventions off the dome is 😂
Are Moomins smooth? I always assumed that they were covered in a thin layer of fur. I guess still smooth, but not hairless.
Hell yeah, love when the Zoo Crew is together \m/
And as for 1984 and its Communist society, Orwell was absolutely a socialist. But he was also very much against communism as it was under Stalin. He didn't like capitalism but hated totalitarianism even more. George was most definitely not a tankie.
This period of European history amuses me for another reason. One of the major arguments you hear about colonialism is "those coloured people just spent all their time fighting each other! We brought peace and civilisation!" Meanwhile, for hundreds of years, Europeans had been... spending all their time fighting each other. The fued between Conrad and Louis spanned generations, and the Crusader territories didn't like each other much either.
I got one better, instead of ham in jello, use hotdogs, boil them, don’t toss the water. Get you a jello pack, chop the hotdogs and take a filler and fill them Miracle whip. Then open the Jello pack mix into the hotdog water, add some peas and carrots, then add the hotdogs and overnight. BOOM! Tasty HotDog and Veggies Jello.
But, why?
So, what would Joe's Stand be?
Scared to death about my survival for the next few years but at least I know I'm not alone on that *and* that I'm in good company listening to military faux pas.
Mood. We all needed a distraction today.
Does this Joe is a JoJo?
Thank you guys for doing what you do. Not to be all parasocial with it and all. But thank you
Needed this
When you said Konrad, I immediately thought of what if Conrad von Hötzendorf led a crusade.
"How did your army freeze to death in the desert, Konrad?"
I concur with all the other comments here about needing a distraction
We all needed this to distract us, thanks for timing the drop so well
Nothing raises my spirits like hilarious military stupidity. My money is on "we forgot humans need water to live" for this one.
Umm... spoilers sort of, don't forget family relationships too.
This is a very, very appreciated break from ,[gestures at everything]
Now more than ever I needed the zoo crew talking about some dumb crusades bullshit
Needed something fun to listen to this morning. Thanks guys
I needed this episode today
